"Don't know how it is now but in the 70's, the most critical thing for a lot of Americans visiting the USSR was finding a roll of toilet paper."
Just returned from my second trip to Russia, and you can bet that I carried my toilet paper with me. Money in the money belt, and toilet paper in my handbag!

"But I could if I lived in Russia."
And my Russian friend travelling with me had to register her passport at the hotel just like I did. That's freedom all right. :(

While the true believers will tell ya that you got to turn your passport to the night clerk at some flea bag hotel in Siberia, while here you can rent a room at motel 6 and claim to be Homer J. Simpson, the truth is that the less advanced the society the more freedom they have. Heck, I bet they have more freedom in all those banana republics and such. The more advanced we are the more advanced our government structures become. Border controls immigration laws, picture passports in 1800? You don't know how lucky you are boy!
Lemme tell ya, communist countries of the 50s had nutting on the land of the free of the 00s, and mandatory seat belts ain't even a half of it!
So send your yearly contribution to the political party of your choice so that their representatives can pass even more laws to assure your, uhm, "freedom".

In 50, or maybe 100 years, it will probably be the last bastion of Western civilization.

"My wife-to-be and I have a leg up: We speak passable Russian. :o)" Vie Shutka?! Ya Tozha gavoritee pa Russkya, no ploha.
If Putin can pass enough land reforms so that people can actually own private, rural property in Russia, and if the old Soviet-era bureaucracy can be reigned in, then Russia may very well turn out to be a rather free place one day.
Just don't try to start your own TV station over there yet!

How come things like not only learning a new language but a whole new alphabet, having electric blackouts, and the phone never working are never mentioned on threads like these. Don't forget to remove the mirrors and wipers from your car when you park it.

So that's why all those Russians are lining up to emigrate to the United States. - Jihadic Cultist -
Shhhhh! Don't spoil their illusion. Maybe they'll emigrate to Russia. Free to create their libertarian "who gives a crap" paradise, they'll achieve human perfection in freedom at long last.
Or not. - 51 by Kevin Fryed -
You'll notice that the Libertarians aren't lining up to leave.
- cheeto -

We won't NEED to leave, fellas.
--- Come the 'free republic' revolution to restore our constitution, ---- bums like you three will leave for the nearest socialist state that will accept your sorry butts as refugees.
Tough search, but try Canada first, -- according to tonites 60 Minutes, -- even you weirdos could get in there.

Ok, reality. First, unfortunetly, as much as I wish it, the Communists are still in the Duma. They still hold 24% of the vote. What is fortunet is that they have been kicked off as heads of all commities. They are now paraihs.
As for gun ownership, the Rodina has stricter laws then the US. If you own an assault rifle, you don't do it legally.
Sure you can have a poster of what ever, but you won't be working for a major corporation in the main offices. You might be in some satellite office some where.
Oh, and Russia has a 13% not a 15% flat rate. But there are other taxes and such and it's only on Income Tax, not Sales Tax.

First off, there is only 2% for sale of land. Secondly, women's life span is not that much different from mens and the overall has gone up almost 6 years. Next, Russian men do not treat their women like crap. No more then American men...might I remind you, your country has a divorce rate of over 60%.

also...
Have sex with a prostitute (as long as s/he is over 16)
To: MarMema
But the real reason that American males are in demand is because they have green cards and most will be divorced in 5 years. Look at the types they are marrying. I know plenty of them that did just that. When economics improve, as now, fewer will leave. Just like what happened with the Germans after WW2.

By the way, having your food inspected by the government is not so bad. Look at Mexico and tell me you'd eat something sold to you on the street. You'd be a fool for doing it.
