It seems to me that impact of Black's in American history and present has been completely downplayed by our media. And in fact, their legacy has been shanghied by such Race Baiting Poverty Pimps as Jesse Jackson his ilk.
So, I'm composing a list of influential Blacks who have made very significant contributions to the greatness of this country, or are now having a very positive impact. All of these people I feel should be studied in our classrooms and held out as examples for all races. Dead Dogs Black History:

J.C. Watts
Alan Keyes
Michael Jordan (amazing skill, and hard work ethic to capitilize on it beyond imagination)
Booker Taliaferro Washington
Ken Hamblin (The Black Avenger)
James Golden (Bo Snerdly from Rush Limbaugh...I think he's better than Rush)
I know the feeling well - my wife ("She-who-must-be-obeyed") falls into the same category. :)

LOL! Unfortunately, other than via Free Republic my wife is the ONLY black conservative she or I know. Although some in her family are probably more conservative than they realize, even if they'd never be caught dead voting Republican.
[shrug] I just learned to deal with it... Life goes on, and the sun'll come up tomorrow. [g]

I'll admit that we are few and far between, when compared to the faces and voices that the media LET'S us see, but we are here.
And quiet as it's kept, our numbers are growing. As more and more blacks who happen to be conservative realize that they are no longer a lone voice in the wilderness, then we will no longer be marginalized by the liberals who present themselves as so-called "leaders" in the black community, nor by the media itself.
I constantly get asked what a lone black conservative in a community can do. The answer, very simply, is to live your life as well as you can. Be visible in your community. There are quite a few in my community who know I am conservative, and many more who don't. But if you asked ANY of them today about Michael King and his wife and family, the first thing they would tell you is that we are good, upstanding, honest people who care about where we live, and who do the right things.
As people get to know you, then they get to know the ideologies. When people get to know me, they are not surprised to find that I'm conservative, yet, they are less likely to approach me in an antagonistic fashion. Why? Because I'm a decent guy, period.
On a serious note, I believe it would do wonders for the black community if they revered the people Dead Dog listed as much as the people I listed.
Rather than on an indivdual level, think about what American blacks as a people have contributed to American (and, in turn, global) culture. Imagine what American music would be like (there would be no rock and roll); no jazz, etc. And, dance would not be the same without the African influence (tap dancing appears to have come from the blacks and Irish [the step-dancing] being thrown together in NYC of the 1840s).
Aside from the musical arena, the influence of jazz on modern fine art is also impressive. And, no need to remind anyone of their contributions to professional and amateur athletics.
During war, blacks have fought and died for this country event through years of discrimination and segregation. Although the Brits offered freedom to any slave who threw in with their side during our Revolutionary War (and, to be sure, some did) fully five thousand blacks were under arms on the patriot side (this does not count the impressive numbers of blacks that had supportive roles during the RevWar, eg, teamster, cook, etc). The first all-black regiment was from Rhode Island, but 1/4 of the men in John Glover's Massachusetts unit of fishermen and sailors (the guys who ferried The General across the Delaware) were black in this mixed unit.
The blacks helped build this country in more ways than one, and it makes me mad when these very real contributions are NEVER cited by black "leaders" (because that will allow African Americans to feel more a part of America).
