Explosion at Apex Technical School

Newsday.com
April 25, 2002, 12:16 PM EDT

A noontime explosion rocked a street in the Chelsea section of Manhattan, injuring at least 40 people and partially collapsing the building, authorities said.

Police sources said the explosion appeared to be caused by a boiler explosion either in a building that houses the Apex Technical School or a sign company next door on West 19th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues.

The explosion caused several floors inside the technical school to collapse, authorities said. The school offers training in such fields as welding, automotive repair, refrigeration, air conditioning, and appliance technology.

More than 100 firefighters were called to the scene. Paramedics were treating the injured on the street and some were taken away in ambulances. The seriousness of the injuries was not known and no fatalities were reported.

Some witnesses reported seeing gas being brought into the technical school's building prior to the explosion. People several blocks away said their offices were shaken by the incident.

Police cordoned off the area in case of a secondary explosion. The school is located at 121 W. 19th St. between Sixth and Seventh Aves.

Well now they're saying it wasn't Apex Tech. Sheesh. Cable news isn't great when it comes to local incidents. I heard them say not too long ago that Chelsea was right next to Ground Zero, which ain't the case. Funny thing is that FOX broadcasts from a studio about 25 blocks from this area, you'd think they'd have a better handle on the geography.

Switching to NY1, at least they know one neighborhood from another.

acetylene as a freon substitute.

Or LP gas. I recently read a report in a firefighting magazine about used cars imported from
other countries having their AC systems charged with LP Gas.
Fortunately, the cars involved were recieved in New Zealand and this issue has not shown up in the US.. yet.

Particularly scary in a front end collision.

(04-25) 09:20 PDT NEW YORK (AP) --  Part of a building collapsed Thursday in the Chelsea section of Manhattan, and at least 21 people were being treated at the scene for injuries, fire officials said.

At least two people were carried out on stretchers and placed into ambulances.

Officials said it appeared some type of explosion collapsed some floors of the building.

"It was just a really loud noise," said Stuart Markowitz, who runs the education department at the nearby Apex Technical School. "Some of our windows did get blown out."

All students in the school were safely evacuated, he said. Initial reports that the collapse took place at the school were not true, he said.

More than 100 firefighters were called to the scene on 19th Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues.

I thought I just heard FNC say that Ground Zero was 2 miles from this site. I don't think 2 miles is that far away.

Apex Tech has reported that the explosion was not in their building, though all their windows were blown out. All their students got out safely.

No major injuries reported yet. No fire.

"No fatalities reported" but I could swear I saw two or three people on stretchers that were completely covered. That says dead to me. What a damn shame.

Witness on CNN reporting that their was a loud "explosion", all the windows were blown out, all the people were evacuated, the ground shook and people were lying on the ground...he was on the 7th floor...he is saying it was next door, not at the school. Hmmmm.

Now he's saying the ground shook first than an explosion? Maybe he's just confused...

NOthing worse then "eyewitnesses" on the scene. Dude on FOX now says explosion was in APEX and he is a student there. Meanwhile he has seen no injured.

NYC-based Fox News Channel and MSNBC, along with WCBS, WABC and WNBC doing a great job reporting this incident... describing the Chelsea neighborhood, interviewing eyewitnesses, etc. (FNC is based in Midtown, MSNBC is across the Hudson in NJ)

Atlanta-based CNN is floundering on this one - probably getting their reports from FNC and MSNBC.

God bless the FDNY and NYPD...
