The media in it's efforts to be first with the news does not bother to be CORRECT with the news and this contributes to our constantly feeling off balance and stressed.

Despite nearly immediate reports that this tragedy did NOT occur in the Apex Training Center, the media continues to say it did. Imagine the families of those who worked or studied in that building.

The media doesn't care a whit.....every fire, every bus accident, every incident is treated with the same frantic tones as on September 11th.

Fittings should be incompatible. Oxygen fittings and acetylene fittings have opposite threads. Freon fittings should be different.

Until some idiot makes an adapter...

The Air Force did that to allow their (low-pressure) liquid oxygen tanks on their aircraft to be recharged from (high pressure) LOX equipment at USN/USMC bases. The first (and last) time they did it, they blew up an F-15C Eagle at MCAS Beaufort. Killed the pilot and the Marine doing the servicing.

The reporters keep saying that they're not sure if the plumbers were working on the boiler today. I think a dead givaway would be the white plumber's truck in front of the building.

Hmm. CNN is bored now. Nobody died. Turning to Prince Abdullah's visit. Sheesh.

Just heard about it. Was it some explosion caused in a building adjacent to Apex?

Well, if he's lived in Chelsea for 7 months or more, he may have heard two.A

If he was actually *in* Chelsea that morning, he probably heard none.

UPS probably did not deliver the welding gas the companies that sell it have trucks and it is a hazmat material. I doubt the gas was the problem. Acetone chemical would be explosive but I would also think a fire would be raging if it were the cause. Still could be the boiler in the sign company next door, it may have exploded and the force of channeled upward and seemed to explode in the upper floors. I wish I had TV here.

Since immigrants make up much of the workforce, skilled and unskilled, in NYC it does not surprise me that half the student body is comprised of immigrants.

You've just described NYC for the past 200 years ;-)

I'm sorry, I know that UPS cannot carry a material like that..you're explanation makes sense. However, the witness on CNN said that there was no known problem with the boiler in his building (KalTech Building) and since he rents to them, I would think that he would know whether or not there was a plumber there or not. OTOH, the UPS driver to report a "hiss" then a "boom".

Another was the night Dianna died. He had a guy call in one of the stations saying he worked for one one of the news companies. He said he understood that she was driving so fast so she could get to the movie-store to rent a copy of Private Parts before they closed.

What about the guy who claimed to have been on the Long Island Rail Road when Ferguson went on a shooting rampage. He told the local guy on ABC that the gunman was shouting "ba-ba-booey, ba-ba-booey!" The newsman never caught on to the prank. Even Howard was initially afraid that one of his listeners had snapped on the LIRR.

Thanks to said incident, of course, the evil Carolyn McCarthy now represents my childhood congressional district.

That's the latest we've heard (see posts on this thread). FNC and apparently CNN have gone back to their "regular" programming. You might get better updates at this point from NY1 or from WABC, WNBC, WCBS, WPIX, etc.

These reporters are really quite idiotic, you know that? The witness (the best one) said that he was IN the building, AT street level, and that the 1st and 2nd floor ceilings "collapsed". PMSNBC is still trying to figure out why people on the higher floors could not get out of the building. HELLO????

Sounds like this thread will be at about 300 posts before we (and the news) figure out which bldg, cause of, etc.

Bird flew into it, no wait, turbulence from the building next to it.

The media doesn't care a whit.....every fire, every bus accident, every incident is treated with the same frantic tones as on September 11th.

And this actually scares me...the media is going to wear everybody down to the point where if an actual terrorist attack did occur again, like 9/11, nobody will care because they will be so used to the media freaking out over every train engineer that ran a red light, every bus driver that had a heart attack, every piece of scaffolding that collapses because of incompetence (happened near where I work), every cruise ship fire, and every boiler explosion.

I've got an acquaintance whose life seems to revolve around every potential terrorist act (which is why I find it too easy to take the occasional potshot at others claiming this or that is terrorist-related). He called me this morning asking if I had hear about the huge explosion in NYC. I tried to reason with him, but he ignored me pointing out that nobody really knows anything, and a small technical school or sign company is not exactly at the top of the terrorists list.

Most importantly: It doesn't appear to be an act of terrorism.

Explosion Rocks Building in Manhattan

April 25, 2002 01:05 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An explosion shook a technical school in Manhattan on Thursday, injuring several people and rattling nerves in a city still jittery from the Sept. 11 attacks.

Unofficially fire department workers at the scene said it may have been an industrial accident, but there was no official confirmation.

Reports were sketchy, but New York City firefighters said the explosion, which was first reported at 11:29 a.m., took place at the Apex Technical School on 121 West 19th Street in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. Apex Technical School teaches auto repair, refrigeration and welding at the 10-story building.

Police said there were conflicting reports, and some witnesses at the scene said the explosion may have occurred at a building next door to Apex.

There was no official number of injuries, but fire department personnel at the scene counted six people going to local hospitals. A triage station was set up on West 19th street, local streets were blocked off and ambulances were lined up to take the injured to hospitals.

Facial and chest burns were among the injuries reported.

People in nearby buildings and on the streets when the explosion took place said they felt the ground shake and saw smoke billowing into the street.

"We're all OK. We weren't sure where it was when we heard the explosion. We heard it and we could feel it as well. It was pretty powerful. It was more of a shock because we were wondering what was happening," said Tara Knabenshue, receptionist at Three of Us Studios, an acting school on 19th Street.

"After it happened, someone (in the office) made the comment that 'this is the last thing we need right now, especially after what's happened,"' Knabenshue said.

A man who was visiting the school said that one floor of the building had collapsed.

"I heard a big explosion. The whole third floor had collapsed. People were stuck on the third floor. They looked like they were hysterical, like they wanted to jump out," said Alan Awol.

Local television stations reported that there were about 100 firefighters on the scene.

New York has been on edge since the Sept. 11 attacks in which a pair of hijacked jetliners smashed into the World Trade Center, reducing the twin towers to rubble. Around 3,000 people were killed in coordinated attacks on New York and Washington.

The United States launched a war on terrorism in response to the attacks.

Federal officials have issued a series of warnings of possible attacks against a wide range of targets. There was no indication that the explosion on Thursday was linked in any way to political violence.

Im on Long Island, right after LIRR massacre I sent a humble letter to MacCarthy with a few bucks.

Little did I know at time that she used funds to support her campaign. In addition she sent me a form letter thanking me and explaining gun control. Needless to say I was outraged and have never donated to an individual victim in similar matter since.

Its a shame because prior to that I was very generous to many victims. I sent her money from my heart..not to hear her rants on gun control which would not have stopped Ferguson anyway.
