They equate Christianity and conservatism with persecution of the Jews, when, in fact, the ones doing the persecuting in the past few centuries, at least, have been socialists, communists, nazis, moose limbs, and atheists.
They somehow don't like the very culture that gives them the foundation of true freedom.
The grassroot republicans have long supported Israel and it has absolutely nothing to do with religion. Most of us admire the fact that they moved into a desert and made it into a garden. They're tough, and feisty and I don't know many Americans who don't admire those traits, but they go over REALLY big with republicans.
A lot of Jews also just seem to flat-out disdain the rural and religious people who form the base of the Republican Party. During the primaries, I was watching George W. and Laura Bush on TV, when a Jewish neighbor of mine who was hanging around in my livingroom began mocking Mrs. Bush's accent. Nevermind the fact that Mrs. Bush had a master's degree. Unfortunately, such elitist thinking is seemingly not uncommon among Jews.
Fortunately, Bush's job performance seems to have caused a lot of people of all colors and creeds to give him a second look. But don't count on Jews to throw their support behind Republicans anytime soon. Bush may have allayed Jewish fears that he'd force them to convert to Christianity, but he still has to convince them that they deserve a tax cut.
Am afraid to ask one of my very liberal Jewish friend, or to even bring up the subject.
It is not very hard to figure, Doughty: it has not been long that the Jews could feel secure. When you try to buy a house and heat that it is not for sale to "Christ-killers," you do not feel like running towards Republicans. Even today, just witness the Jew-bashing here on FR: LarryReid has recently complained that the people with Jewish blood in them, whom even Hitler exempted from racial impurity, should be considered Jews for perpetuity. I pointed out to him that his criteria are more stringent than Hitler's are. No embarrassment in response.
Just a couple of day ago I was lectured that my rabbi "pompously rejects Jesus Christ," with the words like "now, run along stupid rabbi," etc. I asked why the poster speaks so rudely about the leaders of my faith --- he would be very upset if someone were to do this to him. "Why are you doing onto others that which you would not wish for yourself, all the while viewing yourself as a good Christian?" I asked. In reply, I received another lecture that the rabbi should not expect anything else because he does not accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. No other participant on the thread replied to that; no one found this to be offensive enough to respond.
The point is that, as perverted the Left is, this does not happen among Democrats.
I could give you plenty of other examples, if you want. It is not about Israel, although this issue is clearly important for the Jews. For the recent changes, I credit Christian leadership, such as Jerry Falwell, Gary Bauer, Pat Robertson. I believe that Jews have a lot more in common with true Christians than with the Leftists. Together with the Christian community, American Jewry should fight immorality and return this country to its moral foundation.
In the meantime, the bigots among us scare away minorities --- not only Jews, but the Blacks and Hispanics as well. There presence among us undermines the conservatives' cause and does us all a disfavor.
