Freeper Big Gun Enthusiast Advice on .50 BMG Needed....and Appreciated.
self | April 22, 2002 | Wardaddy

Posted on 04/22/2002 9:48:38 AM PDT by wardaddy

My younger brother who is a "black gun" enthusiast has decided to buy a .50 BMG bolt action with his next commission check. He has asked me to "loan" part of the financing. I am unfamiliar with the .50s but have read up on most of them. I agree with him that the time to buy one is now since the future looks possibly bleak for these guns. I would appreciate any advice from anyone who has hands on experience with any of the various makes. Further advice on suitable optics would likewise be welcome.

Thanks to all.

There's hope for this country as long as the wildcat hotrodder mentality causes young patriots to take on little "shop projects" like that 20mm/.50.

Does that little fellow ever shoot that thing? I hope he has a big compensator to screw on the end, and that they clear out the firing range 100 yards on each side when it fires.

And I'd recommend serious ear protection.

NOPE. The AHs in DC are absolute idiots when it comes to weapons. They have no idea why we have guns, or why we should be "allowed" to have them.

There is no respect for our Bill of Rights anymore on the hill, so expect that all rights will be brought before congress for "approval".

If a gun looks scary, it must be banned, even though its less powerful and or accurate than dads deer rifle.

Congress is an embarassment to our nation in front of the world that sees how US citizens are being treated by that body of elected "lords" who have their own personal body guards, and a staff of untold numbers.

Like I always say, there are NO conservatives in DC. Only those who call themselves by that name.

It's quite a shop project anyway; Henry Bowman would surely approve, and make a top offer for it.

Yeah I'm gonna pursue that Co2 chicago phone book shooter idea, legal, lots of free air (for now) and you can always order pizza with your ammo........ they don't leave bruises ya know :o)

I just don't see a downside to this idea cept the bulge when CCW mode is on.

I wonder how many shots a barrel lasts?

My question would be how mant shots would one's shoulder last?

At 4,000 FPS for a 450 grain slug. I wonder if one used a sabot if one could get escape velocity and one's personal space program? Maybe that will take a 37mm necked down to .17 cal.

You guys peaked my curiosity with these big'uns...a little more searching and this popped up...the literature mentions "Armour Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot"...running 1,450 m/s...that'll raise your blood pressure...

Steyr 15.2 mm IWS 2000 Anti-Matériel Rifle (AMR)

Yeah, lets neck one down to .17, why not?

I think I would not shoulder the 20mm/.50, but crank it into a very large vise, adjust it via a closed circuit camera scope, and fire it remotely.

(From the linked Steyr website)

Specifications

Provisional

Cartridge: 15.2 mm Special APFSDS (Armour Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot)

Operation: long recoil, semi-automatic

Locking: rotating bolt

Feed: 5-round box magazine

Weight: ca 18 kg

Length: 1.8 m

Barrel: 1.2 m

Rifling: smoothbore

Sight: x10 telescope

Muzzle velocity: 1,450 m/s (±10 m/s)

One factoid which really got my attention is how flat shooting this sucker is, it rises only .8 meters max going on out to 1000 meters.

I think that's probably the only shoulder arm in the world that really deserves to be called a single-shot. I'd sure want more of a shoulder pad on mine!

OTOH, it looks like it weighs about as much as a crankshaft. That'd probably help the recoil situation a little bit.

Smooth bore ???

This is truly a hand held cannon isn't it?

Wonder what class the JBTs put this in? I'm guessing it ain't over the counter ...LOL.

I didn't see any 15.2mm winged ammo for sale at my last gun show....

When that machinist pictured in 97 sees that Steyr, I'll bet he starts drawing again.

I agree with you completely. The lawmakers are in no position to make laws that affect everyone, because they have lived their entire lives as part of the upper-crust high society that isnt really affected by the majority of laws. Unfortunately when I start talking about these types of things, most people like to either say " I thing the government is doing a fine job, or that they like things the way they are" or just think im some sort of "commie" when they dont even know anything about it in the first place
