U.S. embassy officials in Manama believe Iran helped foment anti-American riots which took place recently in Bahrain just as the Bush administration requested a substantial increase in military aid to Bahrain as part of the U.S.-led war against terrorism.
The administration's request comes as the Defense Department intends to boost U.S. military assets in the kingdom. Bahrain is one of several Gulf Cooperation Council countries meant to receive aircraft and other systems that have been removed from Saudi Arabia. Bahrain is also home for the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, which patrols the Arab Gulf and the Indian Ocean.
According to press reports, an American official said the embassy in Manama has forwarded information to Washington that Shi'ite groups loyal to Iran commandeered what was to have been pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the kingdom. The embassy’s reports concluded that prior to the demonstrations scores of people prepared firebombs and ladders to attack the embassy.
"The Bahrainis have found both equipment and piles of material that was prepared before the demonstration in a planned attack on the embassy," the official said, quoted by the World Tribune. "It is clear that those who organized this are aligned with Iran."
In all, one local protester was killed and more than 600 were injured in two anti-U.S. demonstrations last week. In the latest protest on April 10, dozens were injured when Bahraini troops fired rubber bullets and tear gas.

Not in Bahrain. The Sunni ruling class does not want much to do with the Shi'ite Hezbollah crowd which is trying to kick the USA out of the country. Bahrain was the second Arab country to send troops to help the USA in our war on terror. President Bush has designated Bharain as a "Major Non-NATO Ally".
World-class aqua park set for summer openingDurrat Al Bahrain's Aqua Park will open this summer. The BD6 million water recreational park, which has been designed by Canadian-based White Water, is being built by Bahrain-based Fast Contracting Company.
The 100,000-square-metre facility is the first of many attractions being planned for the 20-square-kilometre mega resort being built on the southern tip of the island, about 35km south of the Askar Roundabout.
Park manager Sim Chookheng says he is aiming for a late June opening.
"We have more than 350 builders and labourers working around the clock to meet our target," he added.
"Most of the foundation work has been completed. We are putting the finishing touches on all 13 rides and will begin our landscaping project later this week."
The park will employ more than 100 people full-time, most of whom will be Bahrainis.
"We are in the midst of our recruiting process," said Mr Slim.
"We are hiring people at all levels, lifeguards, entertainers, executive, administrative and clerical personnel, security and maintenance staff and concessionaires."
The park's operating hours and entrance fees have not yet been determined.
"But we are planning to be open daily, with a one-time admission fee for all rides and attractions," said Mr Sim.
The park has already received an initial Class A rating from the US-based World Water Park Association (WWPA), he said.
"What this means is that the facility meets all world-class standards as a first-class tourist attraction," said Mr Sim.
"It will be an important designation when Durrat Al Bahrain, and Bahrain itself, is being promoted in the global arena as a tourist destination."
The park will accommodate around 5,000 people at a time.
"We will have ample parking facilities and for those visitors who do not wish to drive the 50-kilometre distance from Manama, we will offer a free daily shuttle service from several key locations around the island," he said.
All of the park's computerised rides will be state-of-the-art design.
"All of our attractions will offer the latest technology available in the water park industry," said Mr Sim.
"For example, our wave pools will be equipped with flowrider simulators, which professional surfers use for practice".
The park will include a family wave pool suitable for body surfing, as well as a surf pool, which will have one-metre waves suitable for board surfing.
"Other attractions will include a children's pool, several water slides, and a crazy ride," he added.
Recreational
Mr Sim arrived in Bahrain last week.
The 39-year-old Malaysian national has been in the water park industry for nearly two decades.
The Durrat Al Bahrain Aqua Park will be his sixth water recreational park opening.
"I have opened world-class water theme parks in Vietnam, Armenia and Malaysia," he remarked.
"But I'm most excited over the prospects this project offers."
Mr Sim believes that world-class water parks of this scale are essential to the development of any future tourist resorts.
"Family-oriented holiday venues are one of the fastest-growing segments of the travel and tourism market," he explained.
"Such destinations must offer a range of activities and events that appeal to the entire family. Water parks fit the bill."
Scrabble team to have three new faces
THREE new faces from Bahrain will be seen at the 12th Gulf Scrabble Tournament (GST) next month.
The event is to be held from May 15 to 17 at the Hilton Hotel.
Thilina Elvitigala, aged 14 years, Hashim Kalathil and Lory Sibayan will make their debut at the GST.
Bahrain champion Chris Abordo and Mario Ranasuriya, who took part in the Sixth World Scrabble Championship in the US, will head Bahrain's eight-player contingent.
