Central Texas (anywhere from Waco to Austin and all points in between).. we are about a 3 to 4 hour drive from the coast, depending how you drive, but if you are looking for land, this is where you need to look. summers are blisteringly (is that a word?) hot, but I wouldn't trade living in Texas for anything.

It depends on what you like. Anywhere near the coast will be hot and humid in the summer, but pleasant in the winter if you hate the cold, like I do. Houston is great if you like the performing arts such as opera, ballet and musical theater. We are second only to New York for venues and our local performing companies are all ranked in the top five in the nation. We also have all the big city stuff like Major League Baseball, a brand new NFL team, an NBA team that has seen better times, great restaurants (plentiful very diverse), lots of museums and great festivals. If you're not a big-city type, then going south of Houston is probably your best bet. The farther south you go, the better the beaches are. Good luck!

Lived in Beaumont, Texas until I was eighteen. Stay away from Southeast Texas. They vote Democrat and they are as thick as a brick there

that made me burst out laughing! :):)

Lot of folks are moving to Austin

yeah, and that's the problem. it's too damn crowded here and traffic is horrendous. austin used to be a lot more quaint. it's now too big-cityish.

Skooz - LOVED your description of Texas....especially the perfect depiction of Midland/Odessa! lol

Cyber - good luck on your decision....just one thing: before you move to Texas, just how much do you know about hail and tornados?

Ok...I am a tried and true Texan. I vow never to live anywhere but Texas. Yes, it is hotter than most states and it is humid in most areas...but gosh darn it, Texas is the place to be. Yee haw and all that jazz. Anyway...lived my first 18 years in the Corpus Christi area. I really cannot recommend it. Yes, it has the ocean...and that is nice. But, it is really not what I would consider a "clean" city. The outside towns, Aransas Pass, Rockport, Ingleside, Flour Bluff, etc....DITTO DITTO DITTO!!! Horrible. I currently live in the vicinity of Houston...The Woodlands to be exact. Beautiful area...look up Conroe, Kingwood, Sugar Land, Katy...these are all surrounding areas. I can say from experience that The Woodlands is booming with potential...and booming in reality. There are nice lakes in the area and we are about an hour to an hour and a half from Galveston...not the nicest of beaches, but you can't get too nice on the Coastal Bend. Hill country is nice...Austin is not. Outskirts of Austin are beautiful and there is a nice lake. Dallas...I do not care for...but many of the suburbs are nice. I have a friend who lives in Rockwall and there is a GORGEOUS lake near by. West Texas is flat and DRY. Sand, dust, sand, dust. You will probably want to avoid the Valley and South Texas...can be pretty but you get closer to Mexico and you deal with hurricanes and such. Also...liberal, liberal, liberal. My choice for you would have the be somewhere in the vicinity of Houston. It has a bad rap for pollution and crime...but I have not experienced too many problems. Just avoid living in the city and pick a nice outskirt town. Traffic plagues many people here...but HELLO, where is traffic NOT a problem?? You will have that anywhere. Take the Sam Houston Tollway where you need to go...it may cost money...but it is easier to travel (EZ TAG...get one). Cheers from Texas...Gotta Love it...Gotta Live it.
