So that is for real, no photoshop? I could swear that right tailfin looks larger than the left one, which should be the opposite because the perspective has it furthest from the camera. Interesting.

Thanks for the info.

I guess I'm wondering what a 75yo is doing flying a fairly large airplane. Was it his personal plane? Was he a pilot for a commuter company? Did the plane have passengers?

Still far-fetched. Conceivable enough to keep the tinfoil-hat crowd happy, but considering the people doing this kind of thing it's far more likely & easy for one to either just rent the plane, or sneak on board & off the pilot, and then just crash it. Wiring a plane for remote control is not easily done secretly by amateurs.

Americans are getting so used to complex answers (favored in news media and movies precisely because such things are rare) that they can't seem to accept simple straightforward answers. Follow Occam's Razor.

No breeze in NYC and after my kids get home from school we are heading to the shore for a few hours of natural surf AC!!!!

I am in NYC right now at work! But its a scorcher when you have to go home in these wonderful work clothes that stick to you like velcro. Have fun in AC!

You're welcome - the AeroCommander twin is not THAT big of an airplane. It's bigger than your everyday Cessna 172, but it's not airline-size. There are single engine planes about this size or even slightly bigger (just by eyeballing it - don't have the stats), such as the (very nice) Swiss Pilatus PC-12.

I personally know pilots of that vintage who fly stuff in the Confederate Air Force that is a LOT bigger than this plane. It's all their health, not the age. I know 45 year olds that I'd never fly with because of how poorly they take care of themselves.

Still no answer to my question posted earlier: Is it even possible to covertly rig up a plane like this so that the pilot controls could be disabled on signal and it then be flown by remote control? I know it would be really far fetched on a commercial airliner, but how about a smaller plane like this?

Sorry I missed your earlier post. Here's my opinoin. This plane (Aero Commander) has pretty heavy controls. They are "fly by wire" controls (in the old sense -- big heavy stainless steal cables and heavy counter weights). No electronics here.

Anything is possible, but its just not likely. In a twin, even if all the controls were frozen, you can still control the plane with the throttle (Sioux City). This particular airplane is very controllable in this manner. With one engine out, you still have directional control with the throttle, you've still got mixture controls, variable pitch propellor, ... Hell, its big enough, you could run around in the cabin to make it change direction.
