What the %$^&*?! is going on down there? The military pushed Chavez out, then Chavez supporters pushed Carmona out, now ... who's in charge?!

I hear Gore is chartering a plane down there to demand a recount. The only problem is that the Venezuelan climate is not good at reducing pit stains.

Thanks for all your input elsewhere. FR is great.

Perhaps this move, with the V.P., is kind of a "wait a minute" step back into the Constitution, whatever it's merits or demerits were.

As one of Carmona's first acts, the (Chavez-produced) constitution was revoked, and the earlier Venezuelan constitution was reinstated. If this move means they are going back to their Constitution, I hope it's the pre-Chavez one.

It's an amazing babelfish mistake. The word "French" isn't mentioned in the actual article.

I mentioned on another thread that it seemed to move too severely, not just kicking out Chavez, but the revocation of parliament, etc., and the installment of a person that was elected to nothing.

This new action might be some "second thoughts."

Venezuelan Interim President Quits After One Day

April 13, 2002 10:33 PM ET

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuela's interim President, Pedro Carmona, said that he was resigning on Saturday, just one day after he took power in a military coup which overthrew populist leader Hugo Chavez.

"With full responsibility before the nation and the Venezuelan people, I present this resignation," Carmona told reporters after a turbulent day in which power slipped from his hands and troops loyal to Chavez seized control of the presidential palace.

Chavez's deputy, Diosdado Cabello, has said that he will temporarily assume the presidency until the reappearance of Chavez, who was taken into military custody following Friday's coup and has since been held incommunicado.

It was not clear whether armed forces chief Gen. Efrain Vasquez, whose support for Carmona had weakened during Saturday, would now back Cabello.

Infuriated Chavez supporters have seized control of at least two Caracas television stations.

RCTV is one of the tv stations taken over.

Looks like Chavez' Cuban trained goon-squads and neighborhood watch committees have some power yet. Better buy them off.

The CIA boys are up late tonight. It appears they figured out how to dump Chavez, but forgot that all-important second part: who to replace him with.
