Thanks. Am still wary of Norton.

So am I. But they haven't wrecked 'Ghost' yet..

It's Clean Sweep did me in several OS's ago.

I used it before and after Symantec bought it. Never caused me any problems, 'cept when screwing with the registry. ;-)

It's fax still won't work with XP and has not been installed again.

Never used it.

I think Ghost is reinstalled but I'd have to check. Guess I haven't familiarized myself with Ghost enough.

You ought to. Start with Ghost boot wizard. I don't know your particular setup, but you might be able to image to CD (provided you have a burner. I image to my server). Ghost PE doesn't support all CD burners, yet.

Now I'm pondering finding a RAID card that XP already supports;

Well - I can't help you there..

upgrading memory to 1.5 GIGABYTES FROM 1--given that the 1 Gigabyte RAM cards run as much as a new computer. around $900 USD.

Sheesh..My wife got me a gig of RAM for about 200$ last Christmas. I knew that prices were rising again, but damn!

Thinking of adding a DVD writable but wondering which brand to get.

Can't help you there, either. But a buddy of mine picked one up at the local computer show for $410. It was a steal. Can't remember the brand, but I know it was a major brand.

Getting a new big tower that rolls themother board out the back while still connected--for working with it.

Check out PC Mods. You should be able to find a nice selection there.

Will probably get a video card etc. and dedicated HD's for video movie captures etc. Any recommendations?

Well here's a link from PC World for the latest in video. As for the HD, I always stick w/Western Digital. Get the biggest one(s) you can afford. Digital video eats HD space like no tomorrow.

Also, have a Sound Blaster audio card that's only about a year old. And can't get but one channel to work on a 5 speaker surround speaker system by Logitech. No clue on that problem. Hasn't been a priority given all the others.

Can't help you on this either.

Thanks for your comment. UHHHH how does one use GHOST?You're welcome...and start with the Ghost boot Wizard.

Good luck!

Anyone here having any problems with XP? Any information would be appreciated. (BTW, while we're not computer whizzes, we ARE fairly computer savvy.)

Try networking Windows XP to computers running Windows 2000 or Windows 9.X. Microsoft has discontinued support for the NetBEUI. I tried enabling the TCP/IP for Microsoft Windows clients and servers, and was not able to see my Windows 2000 systems. When I disabled NetBEUI in Windows 2000, I was no longer able to see any other computers on my network. As usual Microsoft left out documentation for how to switch a network from NetBEUI to TCP/IP.

You problems are with HP. They refuse to develop drivers to work properly with XP.

Retired musician, huh?

There're a million questions in theory I could ask you.

...if only there were the time.

P.S. The bimbo running HP has run that company's excellent customer service into the ground. She is an idiot. HP used to be VERY customer focused. Now, they fail to support their own products and have weakened their customer service at all levels. I won't buy another HP product, including their printers.

I like Gateway. We have a small business. One of the computers is an HP, and it has been a royal pain since the day we got it. It is really only good for light duty.

My last Gateway (1993) came with a virus on both the hard disk and MS-DOS disks.

I would strongly NOT recommend HP for desktop computers. They always do things differently than what is industry standard. They always require "special" drivers from HP only.

No wonder HP and Compaq want to merge.

i used to support those! some are really good like the workcentre 385. one thing though, and this is going to sound weird, unless you have a super duper expensive surge protector, don't even bother putting the xrx products into surges. also keep them out of UPS or SPS a.k.a battery backup devices (ESPECIALLY THE LASER/DIGITAL PRODUCTS!) THEY GO ABSOLUTELY BATTY IN THEM.

I have seen two HP PC's in action both were full blown disasters. Constant service problems.

I think the problem is more likely the PC than Windows XP. I loaded XP trhe day it was introduced and aside from the fact I had to dig around for some new drivers, no problems.

Then there is no obvious reason why your hard drive should be split into two logical drives. Did you upgrade from an earlier version of Windows? If so, the partitioning would remain even though it is no longer needed. That would also explain the situation.

I should add, Windows ME is the worst OS software I've used to date. Even Windows 98 SE would be a better choice. I highly recommend Windows 2000. It is the best OS I've used to date including XP. If you have scanners, digital cameras and other toys then XP is probably the better choice due to integrated support.

MS is the favorite whipping boy of the day (sometimes with merit, other times without a shred of it), yet it is not the problem here.

Your problem is with the HP hardware. It is not necessarily up to the maker of an OS to provide proper drivers for all hardware. HP should have ensured that their hardware was compatible with the new OS.

Listen to the others here. They are telling the absolute truth about HP computers. They do leave a lot to be desired.

I believe Windows XP was based on Windows 98.

Bzzzzt! Wrong! But thanks for playing our game. We have a home edition to take with you as your lovely parting gift.

Sure hope you don't work tech-support lines. On the other hand, I think I've talked to you when I've had to call . . . . .
