Taking the most drastic step yet in seven years of reform efforts, Chicago Public Schools officials on Wednesday announced they will close three failing elementary schools and transfer the pupils.

This is the first time officials have shuttered schools for poor performance--the most severe reform measure allowed under the 1995 state law that gave Mayor Richard Daley control of the city's schools.

""Nobody is doing anything to help these teachers and students. Nobody," said Dodge parent Tina Riley. "They set the school up for failure."

It's someone else's fault, the teachers and students had nothing to do with their performance problems? (Sounds familiar)

Can't hurt to try.

What's up with the term "shuttered" and why are they taking an Iowa exam in Chicago schools? Clearly I'm missing the boat. No surprise the teacher's unions are crying in their beer.

I swear! It was a setup!

I'm not from Illinois (duh), but I went up to Chicago last summer and the big story of the weekend was the number of teachers who flunked the exams. There were certainly enough to fill up 3 schools. A city the size of that should not have to explain why they are shutting down their 3 worst schools. They must have hundreds of schools there.

The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) has been given throughout the U. S. One of the best standardized tests. If I remember correctly it was even published when I was in school.
