good luck on finding some of them!

i love reading about the Marines in WW2. 'Flags Of Our Fathers' is a great book.
one time i was riding the bus in San Francisco and i was reading 'Strong Men Armed' by Robert Leckie and there was an older gent who sat next to me and noticed the book. well, he told me that he was on Iwo Jima and that if there was ever a hell on earth, that was it. he said they had captured a jap and as they were walking him back to the beach the jap kept falling to the ground trying to smother himself and commit suicide.
when they finally got to the beach he said that when the jap saw all the ships and military might out there, he resigned himself to capture and stopped struggling.
the Marine said that the best thing about the whole ordeal was when he got back to the ship a sailor brought him a huge slice of ice cold watermelon. he then said he slept on the deck for 24 hours straight.

seeing recent pics of iwo jima it's pretty amazing how much green is growing there.

Don't remember the specific reference at the moment, but there was once oak groves as well as palm trees and several villages on the island....

Yes, I think there is a good chance of finding more of them--in the last several years since I got on the Internet, I have received numerous e-mails from those claiming involvement of one kind or another w/the flag-raising(s).

Wish I had saved all those e-mails now!

So much for taking the word of the "experts" that these were all phonies--always listen to your own heart-then decide.

that's amazing. i just can't picture a village there or oak groves.
seeing it in the films you'd think they were fighting on the moon.
