The situation is different now than during previous waves of immigration. Can you propose a workable policy that would prevent the third worlders who are steeped in Marxism from importing that impoverishing ideology here? Can you envision any way to forma coalition that would support such policies. Both libs and conservatives are pretty unified on opposing open boarders.
You didn't happen to read George Guilder's "Weath and Poverty" did you? I came away from reading that with most of my opinions changed about immigration.

Paul, you bring up a good point...what would it take to get someone who is conservative on a lot of issues to vote for a Democrat. First of all, if it's Hillary, I would definitely vote for whomever had the best chance of defeating her.
But beyond that there's a dilemma. Personally, I think a partial birth abortion ban should have been signed by GWB immediately. What worse terror is there then maiming and then murdering pre-born infants? But, if the Republicans get too cute in their hedging on abortion to get "moderate" votes, and I feel (like in Massachusetts) they aren't going to make lots of abortions illegal, other issues matter. And the border is a huge one.
It's not just that I don't want foreign citizens to move here without developing American values, it's that I really don't like globalism, and think all borders (not just ours) need to be enforced and respected.

Explain how allowing further tens of millions of illiterate, Democrat voting, underacheivers into this country is a good thing.

Oh please. This is a really moot point since neither of you were there. HOWEVER judging by the writings of the founding fathers their intent was NOT to come here to set up a government that would give handouts to the downtrodden. If they wanted something like that they would have had a better chance staying in Europe and grovelling at the feet of wealthy powerful men. Instead they chose the hard route of self sufficiency. So of the two assertions, paul544 yours holds much less water in the face of FACTS.
