CRISIS Magazine - e-Letter
April 4, 2002
Dear Reader,
Here's the first installment of the free CRISIS Magazine e-Letter you requested. Don't worry, they won't usually be this long. But in light of the recent scandals surrounding the priesthood and pedophilia, I think this lengthy e-Letter is absolutely necessary.
The media, egged on by a small group of dissenting Catholics, have been having a field day with this tragedy. And, as you might expect, the reporting has been littered with falsehoods and outright fabrications.
Frankly, I just got sick of hearing all the nonsense. So CRISIS has put together a list of the ten most common false media claims -- along with = our fact-filled responses to them.
Please forward this to anyone you think would benefit from this important information. The more people we can get this out to, the better.
Sincerely,
Deal W. Hudson

(I don't have my ping list on this computer, but I'll ping my whole list tomorrow)
There's simply no logical connection between the deviant behavior of a tiny minority of male clergy and the inclusion of women in their ranks.
If it is false that "Catholic priests are more likely to be pedophiles than other groups of men," then it logically follows replacing half of them with women would reduce by half the number of molesters.
Adding women to the profession would not help if molesters were deliberately seeking to become priests--but that would mean "myth" #1 is true.
If marriage couldn't cure a homosexual, what would make anyone think that a man who
becomes a priest and has homosexual leanings would be cured by being married?
Yep, if you do boys, you be gay.
In 1973, the American Psychological Association changed its characterization of homosexuality as an objectively disordered orientation and removed it from the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual IV
Thats right, for perversionists, by perversionists; its the fox guarding the hen house.
Nobody anywhere is implying that homosexuals or pedophiles should get married and stay in the priesthood. Boot 'em out as soon as they are outed.
There may remain a few homosexuals/pedophiles who would enter "cover" marriages, but no one has thought of that one yet. In that scenario, there would be far fewer of them than we have been dealing with thus far.
There are thousands of good men who would make good priests and are good catholics who are married and/or will be married. Get it?
The church needs to clean house. They should be treated with compassion and respect, but they need to be told:
"Forget all about the priesthood. Go do something else."
Even this looks a bit weird. If the holiness of the Catholic Church were half of what it is cracked up to be, the statistics for priests should be much better.
Absolutely right. There are thousands of DEACONS who are serving the Church today, some number of whom might move on to the priesthood. Most of them are married.
There are over 100 married Anglican and Lutheran converts who are priests today, serving the Church well. Full time. Not second class. Good men.

1 : systematic argumentative discourse in defense (as of a doctrine)
2 : a branch of theology devoted to the defense of the divine origin and authority of Christianity
Some of those DEACONS are more effective and accessible than priests. I've done a 180 on this married priest thing. I want good ones and if it takes letting them marry, I am all for it.
My post was intended for readers who think that people who want married priests want those homosexual ones to get married! As if THAT would solve anything! NOBODY is suggesting that!
Liberals think the next pope will cave in. Lots of conservatives desperately hope that they will restore pre-vatican ii catholicism.
I predict neither is going to happen. It will be a mixed bag and people will be angrier than ever.
But they will make a slow attempt to clean up some of the mess.
Why does the vatican cling to this one thing so fiercely when it isn't de fide? And the media should stay the h*** out of it other than to report news.
