The Clinton administration shut down a 1995 investigation of Islamic charities, concerned that a public probe would expose Saudi Arabia's suspected ties to a global money-laundering operation that raised millions for anti-Israel terrorists, federal officials told The Washington Times.

Law enforcement authorities and others close to the aborted investigation said the State Department pressed federal officials to pull agents off the previously undisclosed probe after the charities were targeted in the diversion of cash to groups that fund terrorism.

"Had the charities been shut down, they would have been unable to raise the millions that since have been used by terrorists in hundreds of suicide attacks,"

Another sad chapter in the Clinton "Legacy".

"There is not one iota of evidence to support these accusations," Mr. Al-Jubeir said. "It is nothing more than an effort to smear our name. If there is any proof, I would suggest it be taken directly to the U.S. government."

Does this guy know that Clinton is now out of office?

Clinton axed terror-fund probe? Wait just a minute. Just yesterday I read in Newsweak that Clinton believes history will give him the credit for this war on terror:

"Now the ex-president is contesting even that, insisting that the war on terrorism, while important, “is not like World War II at all” and will eventually be seen in the context not of the Bush presidency but of Clinton’s global achievements."

Yea right, Bubba.

It looks like this statement will turn out to be true, but not the way the media-Monica intended it:
Now the ex-president is contesting even that, insisting that the war on terrorism, while important, "is not like World War II at all" and will eventually be seen in the context not of the Bush presidency but of Clinton's global achievements.

"Did some $$$$$$$$ (counterfeit or real) go to X42? Did the Arabs learn from the Chinese -- or visa versa?"

Money is definitely an issue. Bonior is the largest recipient of Muslim campaign cash and who can forget the $50,000 that Grifter 97 got from the "American Museum (nee Muslim) Council" in her race. That is not to say that W may have treaded lightly too for the House of Saud, in all fairness. But coupled with the inaction after the '93 WTC bombing etc., the 'Toon's got some 'splainin' to do. Think FALN clemency and you know what he was about...

Bribery is the most common mode in history of business to government relations. In only a few nations is it not common. We used to be one of them, we still can become one of them.

It did not help that Clinton wasn't removed from office, his dishonesty and obvious use of bribery is contagious.

Until the 1900's a small honest government -- honesty and integrity maintained in that smallness -- was the American clear ideal and reality in many dealings -- in both major parties, in the electorate, among office seekers and holders.

On the basis of that common integrity, in a (what has proved to be vain) hope to eradicate bribery and self-dealing, good honest men in that era came up with and initiated Civil Service reform. Their own high standards, and the comparatively high standards of the time blinded them to the unforseen outcome we are experiencing.

The results of divorcing electoral accountability -- a government bureaucracy and infrastructure that waxes and wanes with political tides -- were threefold. One "neutral" -- government got bigger.

Two "negative". Both due to unaccountability. One is that the effectiveness of a government worker declined on some characteristic decay curve to almost a zero asymptote. The second, that by divorcing the elected office-holders from being accountable for results or costs, that made their only accountability for spending -- not to reduce it either, but to spend more.

That is no one elected office-holder can be held to account for the lack of delivery by a huge, established government agency or bureaucracy. Nor is that elected office-holder held to account for piecemeal tax increases, being as particluar ones are buried in a great mass of them. Yet by accepting bribes to authorize more spending the elected office-holder benefits his bribors and their suppliers and employees and can afford electoral marketing.

I used the term "elected office-holder" rather than politician, for clearly at the level of the US Senate, and to lesser degree at lower elected office levels, politics is no longer at play. Civil Service has defused it.

What is at play is who can operate the best bribery franchise.

Maybe they should start with the video of that Muslim leader, standing on a stage in DC, shouting who among you supports Hamas? Who supports Hezbollah? They could try to identify faces in the crowd and work forward.

The suit's main target is Sami Al-Arian, a former University of South Florida professor who created or was associated with several Florida charities or think tanks, including the International Committee for Palestine, Islamic Concern Project and the now-defunct World and Islam Studies Enterprise.

Al-Arian is no longer a professor at the University of South Florida? Where is he now?

One former and three current federal law enforcement officials said the new probe began after U.S. officials learned that intelligence agents in India had wiretapped the telephone of a Pakistani charity funded by the Saudi government and discovered the transfer of $100,000 to Mohamed Atta, one of the 19 al Qaeda hijackers in the September 11 attacks.

I think this is the first time I've seen it stated that one of these charities was involved in that transfer of money to Atta (by Sheikh at the behest of the director of the ISI, as we know from other stories.)

Maybe those computers seized at that Islamic charity in Texas the week before 9/11 would have yielded a lot of information, given time. Could 9/11 have happened when it did to forestall the feds using that information to block terrorist attacks? Bin Laden said on one of the videotapes that he got word the preceding Thursday (Sept. 6) that the attack was going ahead. The suspicious trading in airline put options occurred on Thursday and Friday. What day that week was the raid on the charity?

Remember the claims that Clinton was capable of "compartmentalizing" and "multi-tasking"? All that means is he was capable of screwing up many aspects of American foreign policy and American domestic policy at the same time. Better we should have had a dolt like Jimmy Carter at the helm. He lacked the capacity of doing so may things wrong, simultaneously.

Quote Of The Day nominee, definitely.

Many Muslims are dismayed because some sites searched are among the most established Islamic organizations in the United States, and in some cases, it is unclear what their ties to SAAR or alleged terrorist activity could be.

Hmph. I'm still waiting to see an article that reads: "Many Muslims are dismayed because some fanatics have gone on a world-wide killing spree in the name of their religion.", but I'm not going to hold my breath.

He did so for "political" reasons.

I submit he did it for money. If you read "Shakedown," the arabs were contributing heavily to the DNC!!

RjayneJ-I second Mr Martel's nomination for quote of the day, week, maybe even year.

Clinton's lack of preparedness and inability to grasp the importance of going after terrorist activities hurt us as deeply as his inability to lead an honorable life. By committing perjury as a sitting president, breaking the presidential oath of office to uphold our rule of law, losing his OWN right to practice law upon leaving our most important national office (disgraceful!), pardoning felons, pardoning whole groups of people that in return voted for his wife in NY, covorting with mafia thugs, hollywood idiots-whose photos we got to see literally jumping up and down on the bed in Lincoln's room at the WH (disrespectful!)..on and on...by doing these outrageous, hurtful, immature and pathetic actions, that failed man has earned more disrespect and absolute disdain than he will ever recieve. Too bad.

timestax had it right, there really are almost no words to describe this idiots lack of vision. His willingness to put our nation's safety behind his own desire to look nice and feel good.

To learn that he shut down investigations into possible money laundering, perhaps TERRORIST funding, is ASTOUNDING.

Mo1--golly, did Newsweek's writer forget to include the whole story....or what!? PATHETIC!!!

kcvl-The so called highly trained clerics have certainly been silent within our nation.
