I think it is more likely that Hillary is trying to pick up some IOU's with local Democrats. Long before one can start to run for office, known candidates have to build up support among the faithful by raising money for Demorats.

Gephardt has been doing this for 30 years to no avail. Lots of also ran Democrats do it. Hillary is good because of who she is. She can draw crowds and the media. Lots of candidates will invite her to speak.

Hillary is not likely to run in 2004. Is is quite true that a candidate who runs for president, gets the nomination and is defeated is pretty well out of the game. The odds of getting to try again are very slim. Only sacreficial lambs get to do it. There is never a shortage of candidates and the ones who havn't had a shot don't take kindly to those who have taken a shot and lost and refuse to get out of the way. Jimmy Carter, Mondale, Dukakis, Bush Sr., Dole and several others have found that they are at the end of their careers when they run and lose.

Nixon is about the only guy to run, lose, then come back and win. If Goldwater had not been such a debacle in 1964, Nixon would have never gotten a second chance.

Hillary is young enough to wait until 2008. The Repubicans don't have any good prospects for 2008. Hillary has her eyes on 2008. The odds say a Democrat will lose in 2004 and win in 2008. Hillary will play the odds.

You're assuming that Cheney will run with Bush in 2004-- I wouldn't make that assumption. That leaves a possible 2008 loss for Hilly, too. Lawd, she was born a gamblin' man in a woman's body-- always a bridesmaid, hopefully NEVER a bride.

OK, an oldie:

-------------------

Bill Clinton is walking down a beach and finds an old lamp sticking up out of the sand. He picks it up and rubs it and a magic genie appears. The genie says, "Sorry, but you get only one wish and that's it!" Bill thinks for a few seconds and suddenly pulls a map out of his pocket and says, "Ok, do you see this region of the world here? I want there to be peace in this area. That's my wish."

The genie looks at the map and says, "My god! They have been fighting each other for thousands of years! I'm good, but I don't think that I can do that! Why don't you try a different wish?"

Bill thinks a little bit and says, "You know, my wife is misunderstood and disliked by a lot of people. I wish everyone would like her. ESPECIALLY FREEPERS! That's my wish."

The genie looks stunned and finally says, " Damn! Let me see that map again!"

I hope you're right about Davis, but he should never be underestimated. He's very clever, and his private life is unassailable. Also, the press is on his side.Davis will have the full support of the Democratic Party. But Davis is desperate and is strongly campaigning to his base, such as Gays, Unions, and Latinos, and is tryig to make Abortion the issue. If it works Davis will win. I just hope that Bush will strongly support Simon. So far,Simon has conducted himself well and is not making the mistakes that Reardon made.Simon knows who he is!

Thanks for the ping, CCC!

SFBayArea FReepers, just heard on KSFO 560 AM Radio that Hillary and Davis will be at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco at 4 P.M. TODAY, in case anyone has the urge to FReep.

I'd love to be there, but I can't get out of work. Good luck to those who do go, though!
