FReeper Runs Write-in Campaign for Governor of Maryland
March 29; 2002 | Thomas Taylor

Posted on 03/29/2002 1:07:26 PM PST by sweetliberty

Greetings fellow citizens of Maryland,

My name is Thomas Taylor and I would like to be your governor. Is this a joke? No, I am truly serious. I am not on the ballot nor am I running a fund raiser or very expensive dinner, I am just asking that if you are as frustrated as I am in the candidates and past elected officials, that you read further and listen to what I have to offer you, the only special interest I will serve.

If my platform sounds worthy of your vote, and I hope it does, I only ask that you write in my name, Thomas Taylor, as your choice for governor in 2002, AND that you email at least 10 friends that may be likely to do the same. In this way, I am confident that the people of Maryland will make political history and elect a true man of the people to the state house in Annapolis.

First and foremost, what is in it for you? Obviously for me, I'd be governor, but for you, I will eliminate the state income tax. Too drastic? I think not. History shows that reductions in taxes generate economies and generated economies increase state revenues. Ireland is a good example of this. One of the few European economies that cut taxes dramatically and now is experiencing an economic boom.

Not enough for you? How about, as governor, instead of the near forty percent increase scheduled over the next three years, I will cut the salary of the governor and all elected officials. I still don't know how the powers that be can justify a payraise for governor in the midst of an economic slowdown, and budgetary shortfalls.

Still not enough? Ok, how about a restructuring of the state sales tax revenues to allow more to go directly to the municipality without them having to perform political favors for the inhabitant of the state house; perhaps half of the sales tax generated by the counties, staying in those counties. Local control of the money meaning local accountability and ending the quid pro quo from the state house.

I am for the end to speed traps on Maryland's highways, a waste of Maryland State Trooper man and woman hours. An end to the red light cameras and a return to the sanity of longer yellows to promote public safety rather than generating revenue.

I will improve public safety by reducing crime 25%, plus generating over $20,000,000 additional dollars to supplement crime fighting measures not the least of which being better schooling for the youth of Maryland through better pay for teachers; good teachers. How? Crime has been down 25% in 33 states nationwide, and Maryland has yet to realize this tough on crime aspect of law enforcement, one that puts criminals away for a long, long time and adds an additional 100,000 law enforcers on the streets.

When you write in for governor the name, Thomas Taylor, you will get a governor that is not bound by the special interests of money. I will not accept campaign contributions and owe my allegiance only to the well being of the citizens of Maryland. I, Thomas Taylor, believe that government should be a reflection of the people and should grow out of the prosperity of the people and not because of its intrusion into their lives.

It is my hope, that this email campaign, or "spampaign" as it has been dubbed, can reach the majority of voters who take the time to register to vote, but don't make it to the polls. It is my belief, that given the chance to make political history and lighten their burden, that they will come out in numbers that will free them from an ever growing burden of over taxation.

So please, pass this on to at least 10 people and get out to vote. I hope at least that I will inspire some to make it to the polls and cast a vote for the candidate of their choice, because above all else, casting the vote is truly the biggest prize of all.

Thank you for your time, and I am available on line to answer any and all questions concerning my stance on any issue. Has any other gubernatorial candidate made that promise to you? >tom4governor@hotmail.com<

Because, like I said earlier, you are my only special interest.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Thomas Taylor Self proclaimed gubernatorial candidate of 2002

I received this letter today from my friend and fellow FReeper "teeman8r" and thought it would be a good idea to post it and get the word out that there is a challenger to the liberal status quo in the state of Maryland. I'm sure many FReepers could offer advice and maybe even support. I know I have talked to many of you who have been active in the political arena. I have had many lengthy discussions with teeman over the past year and a half. He is smart and witty and committed to the Constitution and conservatism as well as to his family and I know that he would be a dedicated public servant.

I hope all you Maryland FReepers will give teeman your input. Since I am not in Maryland, there is little else I can do, but y'all are in a position to make a difference.

Thanks Julie.

Taylor sounds like a really good guy (and a freeper!) But we've actually got a chance with Erlich this time for the first time since Spiro T. Agnew.
Hate to kinda be a stick in the mud....

appy pappy, if i have to give pardons to millions of tax dodgers i will. but you are correct in my working to eliminate the state income tax, but i am dogged in my persistence and touched by the FReeping support.

i am not asking anyone to switch votes, erlich is a good man, but at best this election is only going to generate about 16% of the eligible voters in maryland, about 22% of the registered voters. if i can get 10% of the voters who register and don't vote to get out to the polls, then i have a shot. and erlich isn't talking about giving back money, even the hefty salary increase for the governor.
