Israeli police storm Jerusalem's most contested holy site
Israeli police have stormed into the most sensitive religious site in the Holy Land, throwing stun grenades at Palestinian rock-throwers, police said.
After Friday prayers at the Al Aqsa Mosque on the disputed hilltop in the Old City of Jerusalem, Palestinian youths started throwing rocks at Israeli police posted at a gate just outside, and at Jewish worshippers at the Western Wall below, police said.
Police stormed into the open area outside the mosque and threw stun grenades, according to a police announcement. Police said the rock-throwing was continuing, and police were on the scene.
One policeman was lightly injured by a rock, police said.
The site is known to Muslims as Haram as-Sharif, the Noble Sanctuary, which holds two large mosques. Muslims revere it as the site from where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven.
Eighteen months of Palestinian-Israeli violence erupted after Ariel Sharon, now Israel's prime minister, visited the site in September 2000 to emphasize Israel's claim of sovereignty to what they call the Temple Mount. The two mosques are built atop the ruins of the biblical Jewish Temples.

Who'da thunk: Jesus' Second Coming may actually happen on Easter...
I never thought it would happen in my life time on earth
Others have remarked on FR in the last 12 hours that Passover coincides with Holy Thursday, and this is happenning on Good Friday!! I have always been a bit skeptical aoout this sort of thing, up until now. Now I think it is time to pray!!
Too funny!!
$%%#%&%^(&* 'em and let their Allah sort 'em out!
1. Arrest Yassar Arafat, and put him on trial.
2. Launch a full scale attack on the Palestinians, or
3. Turn the other cheek and let it go.
Most of the callers (I'd say 98%) said "Option B", citing that the US has no right to tell Israel how to deal with these terrorists because we dealt with the terrorists the way we saw fit. I agreed also with Option B, but with great hesitation because Israel is surrounded by lunatics (re: Iraq). Also, this being Easter weekend and Passover....I think we may never forget this Easter/Passover for the rest of our lives.
Did anyone else see the picture of King Abdullah kissing the Iraqi delegate at the Arab Peace Summit? UGH. Can you say, "We're on our own now?" when it comes to taking them out?
I'm gonna start praying.
As my mother also told me .. make sure your bags are packed because you never know ..
One thing I do know is .. that it is going to get pretty nasty over there before this weekend is over
Yes lots of prayers are needed .. BIG TIME
Problem is it won't be just the Palestinians the Israelis will be fighting .. Majority of the Arab countries are behind the Palestinians ..
Isreal needs our prayers more then ever now ..
I hope that everyone who always wanted to see Bagdad, Damascus and maybe Beirut have already done so, because it looks like they are not going to get another chance. It is perfectly obvious that if these nations attack, Israel will nuke them into the Devonian Age. Let's hope that the other side does not have any 'heavy hitters' willing to go for extra innings on this. Sorry for the sports metaphors, but I am getting antsy!
Arafat ready to die - - Palestinian minister Shaath | |
BEIRUT, March 29 (Reuters) - Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is ready to die in a confrontation with Israeli forces who smashed their way into his compound in the West Bank, Palestinian Planning Minister Nabil Shaath said on Friday. "He is calm, he is steadfast, he is sure, not afraid of death. He never was," Shaath told Reuters television in Beirut, adding that he was in touch by telephone with Arafat. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, calling Arafat an enemy, said he had decided to send troops to Ramallah, blaming the Palestinian leader for failing to prevent attacks against Israelis during the past 18 months of an uprising against occupation. Five Palestinians and one Israeli soldier were killed in gunbattles on Friday after about 100 tanks and armoured personnel carriers entered Ramallah. Israeli armour surrounded Arafat's office and took over at least one building inside the compound. The raid came a day after an Arab summit in Beirut backed a Saudi peace initiative offering Israel normal ties with Arab states in exchange for its withdrawal from occupied Arab land and allowing the establishment of a Palestinian state. Shaath said Israeli forces were killing civilians on the street. "It is like a duck shoot," he said, adding that he would try to join Arafat in the West Bank on Friday. He said Israeli "tanks and and heavy armoured cars are just three yards below his (Arafat's) office...". ((Beirut editorial +9611 983885, fax +9611 983889, beirut.newsroom@reuters.com))
And I know what you mean about the Palestinians being supported by the other Arab countries. UGH is what my stomach is saying.
Israel has the nukes, yes...but ....to what end? I'm praying very hard. It's only noon over there.
Did you know that these "suicide bomber" families are compensated for their deeds? The amount they get depends upon the amount of destruction they cause.
Can you say "dysfunctional family"? Sheesh.
