True, Gore and Hitlery and all those other cartoonish RAT horror figures are a terrible alternative to Bush. And true, the thought of four or eight years of having these people in the White House is more than I can stomach.

That said, I will not forgive Bush for this travesty. I have heard all the so-called "reasons" why he will sign the bill. But the fact is that he is participating in the most blatant and direct assault on the US Constitution that I have seen in my lifetime. This is a disgusting outrage.

Now when I see him on TV, I have to hit the mute button just like I did for Clinton. Because now whenever Bush talks about freedom, I think about him cavalierly taking an axe to the Bill of Rights, and I know he is full of shiite. It makes me heart-sick.

I am very, very upset about this. Don't tell me to get over it because I don't intend to. Ever. And I don't think any other patriotic American should ever get over it either.

"It will probably take about three seconds to get to the W, I may hesitate on the period, and then rip through the Bush."

Good thing we have a man in the White House that will stand by his principles!

What next, Bush supporting open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens?

Good thing we did not elect Al Gore.

President Bush has my support on most issues, but this isn't one, this is a MISTAKE of epic proportions. Please G.W. rethink this one.

Might as well elected John McCain or Algore. Also, doesn't this make Bush a LIAR?! Didn't he say he would NOT sign any crooked campain finance bill?!

Is there any real doubt why Bush is signing this bill?

Enron didn't damage him, but it came close. Ken Lay's millions of units of free speech granted his company access to the government ordinary American slobs could never dream of.

The political fallout of vetoing this bill is a greater danger in Bush's mind than any consequences associated with it becoming law.

This is a major disappointment. What has been a very bold and principled first year in office has been traded in for a short-sighted political move.

Its especially disappointing because its a strong sign that Bush will bend to media pressure. Which means, fellow Freepers, that we shouldn't get our hopes up about Bush enacting any restrictions on abortion.

Its also disappointing because this month has shown that the real center of power in this country is not in the President, its with the Senate majority leader (who was not elected).

The press would crucify President Bush if he vetoed this bill; many of us are confident that the USSC will declare this travesty UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

I request that some of the "energy" on this thread also be directed to telling our military "Thanks".

<Bush said he felt the campaign bill did not fully address the need to require identification of who is funding so-called independent groups that introduce "scurrilous, untrue" television advertisements in the last days of a campaign, as he said happened to him in his 2000 presidential campaign.

"I've always thought that people who pump money into the political system, we ought to know who they are," he said.>

So apparently Bush is more interested in Big Brother knowing what we are saying about him than our free speech?

One remark I hear/read on other threads is "You'd rather have Gore for President?" which, IMHO, is totally irrelvant to the issue at hand.

The issue is our freedom to express politcal dissent and our freedom of political association without fear of arrest by the federal government. This is why I have always been against a flag burning amendment.....

Congress has just passed (overwhelmingly, I might add) sweeping legislation that would make federal felons out of any of us associating with a group of like minded persons and mentions a candidate's NAME (either praise or criticism).

Our President has said he will sign it with no hesitiation. To rub salt into wounds, no one seems to give a flying f about the obvious contradiction to the first amendment. We need this legislation, they say.

I did not vote for the President because he was the lesser of 2 evils. I voted for him because I thought he was a man of integrity and many times he said "it's the right thing to do." Now, when it counts, "the right thing to do is to veto this legislation. I do not care how many more times it rears it's ugly head in Congress. The right thing to do is for our President to say to Congress "You have knowingly violated the 1st amendment. Fix it, then I will consider signing it. I will not sign anything I know to be a violation of my oath of office."

Me oh my... how will the Bushbots spin this one?

As much as I hated it when the other side spun while Clinton was in office, I knew that I'd hate it even more when our own side did it under Bush. Well, I do.

I want to be on a side that actually gives a s--t about this nation. I guess that's just too much to ask these days, when the bars have been lowered to the point that it looks like we're in a limbo contest rather than talking about ideals that will make this nation the strongest it can be.

Raise the bars? The very idea... I should have my head examined. Bushbots will be by shortly to remind me.
