USO Canteen Freeper Style

War has come to our shores. It was committed on American soil.  We have been able to live in Freedom only because of those who have fought in the past wars giving life, limb and all the sacrifices for us to live in Freedom and go about our day without fear.

On September 11, 2001, that comfort, that feeling of living in a land that would not be attacked ended.

William T. Sherman said it succinctly, "War is hell."

The day has come for this Nation and its people to understand that there is a risk in losing its freedom, and in reality there always has been. We have ONLY stayed free because of the sacrifices of our military, our warriors.

This is about saving the future of America. Aristotle said, "We make war that we may live in peace."

We are seeing the American Flag flying at homes now more than ever in my lifetime. We are seeing the American Flag flying on vehicles and people wearing Flag pins and small Flags on their clothes. America is united in the cause for Freedom and for our country to WIN against the evil that came upon our land to kill and hurt us. To change our way of life and to destroy America which is US, you and me. To take away our precious Freedom.

This is the Freeper version of the USO Canteen. Where soldiers could come and feel a small part of being at home. It is a place where you that have family in the military can post a thought to a loved one that might be able to read it far away from home. A place where we that support our military can help support them, post to them, fun graphics showing the price in America and our troops. Poems, quotes, cartoons, or articles of how America is behind our troops.

Those in our military are our Nation's warriors. Let us join hands, fly our Flag and let the world know how important our warriors are to us....And that our MILITARY, our Warriors, are America's TRUE HEROS!

"No Marine was ever honored for what they received. Honor was the reward for what they gave." (Anonymous) CHIEF gave his all in many ways. He touched our lives and his friendship meant so much to all of us. He will live in our hearts forever, and his friendship will always be a bright and shining memory in our hearts and souls.

Thanks for the ping, SB.

I can honestly say that I had a ton of fun being an HM2 with the FMF my whole enlistment, despite the Mickey-Mouse getting knee-deep sometimes. It was like a huge camping expedition with Uncle Sam paying for everything. Saved some folks, lost a few, and got to train with just about every toy the USMC had in inventory up to that time. Quite the experience for a Florida swamp rat right out of high school.

I had a great time with the Marines -- they didn't tell me how to do my job and I sure wasn't going to tell them how to theirs! Except maybe how to take care of their feet... $;-)

Good Morning Everyone!

Thank you SB for the wonderful theme today, the unrecognized hero's of the battlefield for sure.

I conjure up the image in my mind of the scene in Saving Private Ryan...during the landing, the medics are working on the guy on the beach under intense fire, and use bodies to try and protect the one they are working on...a bullet finally goes through the woundeds helmet and the medics, in their frustration yell out "give us a (expletive) chance here"

CORPSMAN UP!

Two words you never want to hear...but if you do, you know that "Doc" will be there, giving his heart, soul, and blood to take care of his charge...

God bless 'em all...

Except maybe how to take care of their feet...

LOL!! Went to the Clinic here (No BAS at Quantico) with an in-grown toenail. The contract civilian Dr. took one look at it and said "There's nothing I can do...I'll make you an appointment next week with podiatry..."

Now, being a typical jarhead, I had let it progress substantially (oozing copiuos amounts of puss, could hardly put my boot on) before I even thought of going to the clinic.

As I was walking out, I recognized an Independent Duty Corpsman (IDC) who I had served with at 2d Marines... I asked him to take care of the problem. He gathered a bunch of the new corpsman around and proceeded to hold school as he carved up my toe...

Moral of the story...you want to be taken care of; see a corpsman...I love you guys! Thanks brother!

~ Combat Medics ~
by Ralph Baker

Our kit is filled with gauze and tape,
We have no gun to shoot
Our place is with the Infantry,
We wear the same old suit.

Sometimes, they laugh and call us "Doc",
And think we're quite the jerk.
We lay around and roll the pills
While they march and do dirty work.

But when the angry bullets whine,
And blood flows fast and red,
We kneel besides our critic then
And treat his wounded head.

Our stretcher boys are in the lines
To bring the fallen in.
They brave the bullets just like you,
And hear the hellish din.

Our uniforms are starched with blood
Of comrades in the fight.
We fear the dawn we wake upon,
What was the score last night?

What fallen friend, who yesterday
Said "Medics do not fight",
Needs help these dirty hands can give
With bandage soft and white.

God bless each dirty bearded guy
Whose face we can't forget,
Who thanked us with his tear-filled eyes
For his last cigarette.

We watched them live, we watched them die,
Our hands with blood are wet.
We fold them to our breast and pray
For friends we can't forget.

I’m the one called "Doc"

I’m the one called "Doc"
I shall not walk in your footsteps,
But I will walk by your side.
I shall not walk in your image,
I’ve earned my own title of pride.

We’ve answered the call together,
On sea and foreign land.
When the cry for help was given,
I’ve been there right at hand.

Whether I am on the ocean
Or in the jungle wearing greens,
Giving aid to my fellow man,
Be it Sailors or Marines.

So the next time you see a corpsman
And you think of calling him "squid",
Think of the job he’s doing
As those before him did.

And if you ever have to go out there
And your life is on the block,
Look at the one right next to you...
I’m the one called "Doc".

The poem in #3 is beautifully gutt wrenching. I'm grateful so many fallen soldiers had compassionate human contact in their last moments, and had someone say to them, "I am with you" as they went into the arms of God. The courage it takes to leave your mother and father or the love of your life, to defend freedom with the possibility of dying away from them, is amazing to me. I'm in awe of the personal sacrifices and courage it takes to serve in the military.

No snow. It has been unseasonably cold. This will likely be the first time in recorded history that March will be the coldest month of the winter. Don'cha love global warming?
