I can honestly say that I had a ton of fun being an HM2 with the FMF my whole enlistment, despite the Mickey-Mouse getting knee-deep sometimes. It was like a huge camping expedition with Uncle Sam paying for everything. Saved some folks, lost a few, and got to train with just about every toy the USMC had in inventory up to that time. Quite the experience for a Florida swamp rat right out of high school.
I had a great time with the Marines -- they didn't tell me how to do my job and I sure wasn't going to tell them how to theirs! Except maybe how to take care of their feet... $;-)
LOL!! Went to the Clinic here (No BAS at Quantico) with an in-grown toenail. The contract civilian Dr. took one look at it and said "There's nothing I can do...I'll make you an appointment next week with podiatry..."
Now, being a typical jarhead, I had let it progress substantially (oozing copiuos amounts of puss, could hardly put my boot on) before I even thought of going to the clinic.
As I was walking out, I recognized an Independent Duty Corpsman (IDC) who I had served with at 2d Marines... I asked him to take care of the problem. He gathered a bunch of the new corpsman around and proceeded to hold school as he carved up my toe...
Moral of the story...you want to be taken care of; see a corpsman...I love you guys! Thanks brother!
GREAT post !
I thank you Joe, it means so much to me . Your serving our country and you still are in so many ways.
