The Washington Post reported today that President joked about signing the unconstitutional Shays-Meehan campaign finance reform bill passed by the Senate last week.

Bush, in a statement issued Wednesday night, had expressed misgivings about whether parts of the bill were constitutional but said that he would sign the bill anyway.

His decision to sign the bill has kicked up a firestorm of dissent in the conservative community, including a scathing editorial by The Washington Times and a letter from the American Conservative Union signed by 60 conservative leaders.

Hey, nobody's holding a gun to his head. Bush doesn't have to sign any bill if he feels it's unconstitutional.

Uphold the Constitution, nothing more, nothing less. Nothing is in his oath of office says that this can be altered because of political gain or loss.

He basically told Congress he would sign whatever CFR bill they sent him

After telling the voters during the campaign that he wouldn't.

Sounds like George I.. you remember, "Read My Lips, etc."

Sams $hit, different day, but you'll vote for them again, won't you?

No other cohice, throwing you vote away, etc.

Yeah Texas I am a conservative and I voted for George W. but next time I will either vote third party or just decline to vote for anyone, I am a very unhappy camper!

I have said the exact same thing arly. Immigration policy, or the lack there of is my main beef with Bush. This just adds fuel to the fire.

Before I would vote for Bush again, I will write "Barbra Streisand" on the ballot.

His comments were in response to a silly question regarding a "wholehearted signing or a reluctant signing". His point was, as everyone here agrees, who cares what kind of signature it is. He's expressed his misgivings on the bill and the type of signature means nothing. The question begged a "flippant" answer.

Why do people think this "reform" bill is unconstitutional but campaign finance laws in general are not?

The TV ads? Ha! Watch how they leap that hurdle.

In any event, much ado about nothing. Except that he said that he would veto it. That part there is no getting around.

Actually you are right. No one knows for certain what Bush REALLY thinks about the Court vis-a-vis this bill. But I believe he was quoted somewhere saying that parts of the bill were unconstitutional or something like that.

"I still support him as commander-in-chief and his leadership in the war on terror, but he needs to reread the Constitution--especially the Bill of Rights."

Naw! There's mischief afoot here! G.W. has a plan that will somehow make this boomerang on the Dimocrats! G.W. would not betray us. There's some reason for this maneuver.

Somehow, God has a plan in all this and we have to be just a little bit more patient, but of course, we all want our cakes and ice cream right now, but sometimes that isn't how God works in a crisis moment such as this! Pray for our Commander in Chief as well as our President! Grassontop

You are so right. I firmly believe that God gave us Bush for this time in our history. Thanks for reminding me that God is involved in our doings. We do need to pray that Bush continues to follow God's will and does not fall prey to the corruption of Washington and power.

You know Bush can also take away issues from the Democrats by becoming a Democrat.

Bush is totally wrong in signing the CFR Bill. This tells the conservatives he will sell out his principles to politics on some issues. Same thing with regards to placing tarriffs on steel coming in to U.S.

Most people admire someone who stands up for what he or she believes, especially a politician who stays with principle over public opinion.

In the end his signing of this bill will be a political loss for him IMHO.

"...Bush is putting a second term at risk by testing just how far he can push his base before they turn against him."

I have already made up my mind. Any SOB who would play fast and loose with my freedoms for political purposes is not someone I want in the White House. This guy needs to be turned out of office, sooner rather than later.

Hey! Did the SOB who was in the White House for 8 long years, did he not play with Americas freedoms? Did they get him kicked out? You need to think about the destruction that was caused on X-42's watch and compare it to what Bush is and has been doing! X-42 don't even have a legacy, while Bush is building a strong legacy, and this little Bill thingy is just a "Be patient America, Gods in control" thingy and we will just have to wait to see what the outcome is going to be. So am I to understand that it is your position that it's OK for Bush to screw around with the Bill of Rights just because you perceive Bush to be a better President?

That's rich. Go back to sleep.

Yes! Bush is much better than that nationally televised liar X-42 will ever be. You just wait and see, there is a spiritual experience in this human error, but we all have to wait.

Besides, do you like the idea of a democrat making our country into a socialistic, communistic U.S. of A.? Well, I don't! Grassontop
