Sarah Brady, Gun Criminal?
NEWSMAX ^ | 3/22/02 | Limbacher

Move over, Rosie O'Donnell: The newest "celebrity" anti-gun hypocrite is Sarah Brady.

Mrs. Brady "bought her son a powerful rifle for Christmas in 2000 - and may have skirted Delaware state background-check requirements," the New York Daily News reported Thursday.

Some people will do anything to tell a book. No doubt to increase interest in what otherwise would be a boring memoir, the gun rights opponent writes that she bought James Brady Jr. a Remington .30-06, "complete with scope and safety lock," at a gun shop in Lewes, Del.

"I can't describe how I felt when I picked up that rifle, loaded it into my little car and drove home," she writes. "It seemed so incredibly strange: Sarah Brady, of all people, packing heat."

According to her book, the store ran federal Brady Law and state background checks with much ado. But the book suggests she did not have her son checked, as required by Delaware law.

Delaware Justice Department spokeswoman Lori Sitler said the purchase could be illegal if Mrs. Brady did not say who she was buying the gun for and submit his "name, rank and serial number" for an inquiry.

"You can't purchase a gun for someone else," Sitler told the Daily News. "That would be a 'straw purchase.' You've got a problem right there."

Gun rights advocates were surprised to hear of Mrs. Brady's antics.

"We hope that it's innocuous and there's been no laws violated," said James Jay Baker, chief lobbyist for National Rifle Association. "It's obviously interesting that Sarah would be purchasing firearms of any kind for anybody, given her championing of restrictive guns laws for everyone."

Seniors United Supporting the Second Amendment told NewsMax.com it was asking Delaware and the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate "what appears to be a criminal act" by Mrs. Brady.

"Sarah Brady is infamous for her radical anti-Second Amendment positions and her work to strip the citizens if the United States of their civil rights. She is the head of an extremist group that is working to gut the Bill of Rights," the group said in a statement.

"Sarah Brady is typical of the anti-civil rights radicals," noted John Bender, executive director of SUSSA. "She wants to ban private transfers of guns for everyone but her and her elitist friends. If a black mother in a Delaware public housing apartment did this she would already be charged with a crime. I’m wondering if Delaware has different enforcement standards for rich white women.”

The group concluded: "Sarah Brady is one of the leaders in the anti-civil rights movement’s attempt to make all private transfers of firearms illegal. Along with other extremists she pushed Congress to make this type of straw purchase illegal. Law enforcement should show her what her work has accomplished."

Mrs. Brady became a media-adored opponent of the Second Amendment after her husband, James, White House press secretary to President Ronald Reagan, was shot in a 1981 assassination attempt on Reagan.

If handled right, this could be one of the best pieces of discrediting information to come down the pike in a long time.Unlike James Baker,I hope she did break the law so that pro-gun forces can wreak havoc on that dam%BRADY BILL.If this story turns out to be true,HA! HA! HA!

he really doesn’t strain his back doing the heavy journalistic work himself.

Limbacher cracks me up!

He basically changes the title of other people's articles, adds a few "Newsmax has learned..." statements to it, and then puts his name on it.

I'd say that he was ripping off his employer if he wasn't his own boss!

Dead, what do you think a real reporter should do? He gave the NY Daily News credit. Want him to fly to Delaware before reporting on the story? After a brief search I can't even find the story on the NY Daily News site. So it appears to me NewsMax could either link to perhaps the Miami Herald, so more FReepers could read what the Brady Campaign has to say, or re-write the story themselves. He substituted four paragraphs of statement from Seniors United Supporting the 2nd Amendment (though I admit I never heard of them before). And compared Brady's hypocrisy to that of Rosie O.

People on FR shouldn't lightly scorn reporters like those on NewsMax or WND -- they do much of the heavy lifting that allows us to read the news for free. (probably without permission, may I add)

I read an article somewhere that said Mr.Brady had one of the best collections of full automatic firearms in the country before his brain damage.

Can anyone confirm this?

The latest thing I heard is that the New York Daily News is retracting its story tomorrow because apparently they stretched the truth when they said this was illegal. (Did it really sound correct to people that you can't buy a gun for someone as a gift?)

The Sarah Brady quotation in #51 is bogus. It originally appeared in Machine Gun News, June 1991, Volume 5, Number 1, page 6. Neal Knox checked into this extensively - before it even appeared in the National Educator - and concluded that it was bogus.

And Jim Brady never had machine guns. In fact, Republican senatorial candidate Al Salvi of Illinois found that out the hard way in October 1996 when he repeated that myth publicly and the press pounded him for it and he had to retract it. And he lost the election.

You can read more about both of these myths at...

"One reason I dislike hunters....I hear stories like this ALL THE TIME"

How come I don't hear stories like this all the time

I think that "hunter" (in your book) should shot with similar arrows.

Do you hear solutions like that all the time?

I believe this is a known hoax (I could be wrong). In other words, she never said it. She may believe it and wish she could say it, but nobody has been able to confirm.

It does not enhance our credibility to use discredited quotations; their actual statements are sufficient.

ALL:

I worked and lived by hunters all my life. I heard all kinds of stories....even had my cat come home with a bullet through her...to die.

I know what typical hunters do out in the woods drinking and shooting whatever they see. I have heard TONS of stories from just plain people in Western New york...when it was deer..pheasant season....I LIVED IT FOR MANY YEARS. DOn't tell me I don't know. I know.

Hunters shooting other animals is very standard practice....
I'd like ONE hunter in here tell me he never shot a crow....an extra pheasant...a racoon....a rabbit....just for the FUN of it. If you do...you are a liar. Giving Kids this idea that killing animals is a legal "SPORT" is SICK and DANGEROUS.....It should be stopped. COMMON SENSE TO ME!

Kids should be brought up to RESPECT animals....not that it's "legal" or that it is a "SPORT" to KILL them.

Unfrigginbelievable.

thanks for the ping!
My understanding is that Mr. Brady was a gun enthusiast prior to his sad accident.
Looks like the son didn't totally lose the desire to enjoy sporting arms.
I am shocked that Sarah Brady would actually go into a gun store.

Let's be clear that we merely wish to enforce the laws on the books ... otherwise, the Brady Campaign will push to close the Family Gift Transfer Loophole, for all of us.

TC, It would be interesting to find out if Deleware has the "zero tolerance" types of firearms laws, and how they persecute them. This will be interesting to watch. Personally, I hope she goes DIRECTLY to jail. But, only if ONE other person has been incarcerated for a similar "offense". Peace and love, George.

even had my cat come home with a bullet through her...to die.

I am getting ready to set a trap to start catching cats that come to our yard to catch birds my wife feeds. I've had to do this before. The city pound takes them for nothing. If I don't trap enough I will have to shoot some. I'll be sure that they don't go home to die. People who let cats roam unattended are irresponsible.

tell me he never shot a crow....an extra pheasant...a racoon....a rabbit....just for the FUN of it.

I have shot all of the above (except that I don't know what an "extra" pheasant is) and not just for sport. We used to shoot crows to protect crops until fools decided crows were more important than humans. I've shot racoons to protect chickens. Pheasants and rabbits for eating. May have been fun but that was not the only reason. My father shot pheasants and rabbits to protect his garden and ate the "varmits".

You should be the first to go on my new show.

ps...when I lived in the country I let my cats roam.....they shouldn't be expected to be shot by a hunter. Now, I never let my cats roam....

I guess some people should have guns but others not.

Maybe so. But I am not willing to be the one to determine that, much less make them pass through hoops to prove it. Innocent until proven guilty.

I never shot a crow, an extra pheasant, a racoon, a rabbit, just for the FUN of it.

Geez. I don't see my nose growing or my pants on fire.
