Are Hispanics likely to become more Republican the longer they stay in the U.S., and the more they rise up the income scale? No. A study by political scientists James G. Gimpel and Karen Kaufmann showed that Hispanics became more Democratic the longer they stayed in the U.S., and though Republican identification did indeed rise with prosperity, the Democrats retained a 10-point lead even at the highest levels of income.

That's so strange - I heard an expert yesterday on radio program say just the opposite of that quote. He claimed the longer newcomers stay and work and pay taxes (and get off the dole), the more conservative and R they become.

Political suicide of an American Political Party, led by it's own party leader and the very President of the Nation.

Sheer nonsense based on terribly subjective wishful thinking.

Good article, glad some of the forces of G.O.P. common sense and respect for law are gaining. It is only because of the taste of a larger backlash they enjoyed the other day. Nothing more. Nothing less.

O'Sullivan is right on some things, wrong on others. The study he always cites is from CIR which was based on a small sample of Hispanic Americans. He must look at other surveys regarding, for example, voting patterns amoung middle class hispanics.

He is also DEAD WRONG about Florida having ONCE been a Republican state and immigration being a factor in recent voting patterns. Florida has NEVER reelected a Republican governor, had a Democratic Senate until 1996 andlegislature until 1998, voted for LYNDON JOHNSON in 1964 and Bill Clinton in 1996, and has elected flaming liberals such as Lawton Chiles, Leroy Collins and Bob Graham to the State House and the Senate.

The reason Florida was so close had NOTHING to do with immigration (unless you count the growing Puerto Rican vote in Orlando and Puerto Ricans are US citizens, NOT immigrants). It had to do with 1. VERY HIGH black turnout 2. Low Christian Conservative turnoout and 3. High Jewish turnout in SE Florida.

In short Florida WAS NEVER SOLIDLY REPUBLICAN and is a swing state.

Interestingly enough --in Bush's vist to El Paso this Thursday, and there weren't any antiwar protestors but several Hispanic groups protesting NAFTA and the sending their jobs out of the country. Lack of jobs for Hispanics on the border due to high illegal immigration and NAFTA will hurt Bush and Perry a lot.

Good post. The "Republican Strategy" on this mess is too stupid to even be called a "strategy".

More red meat doom and gloom for the anti-immigrant crowd.

Mr. O'Sullivan didn't mention that the anti-bilingual referendum passed with large Hispanic support.

Also Mr. O'Sullivan doesn't mention that Bill Simon is leading Gray Davis in the Califronia governors race at the present time.

According to Mr. O'Sullivan rant Simon should be 20 points behind because of the lockstep Hispanic support for Davis, but he isn't.

Maybe Mr. O'Sullivan can't see that Hispanics are just like other people and can see incompetance when they see it and will vote against it.

But that would mean that Mr. O'Sullivan would actually see Hispanics as human beings, which it appears he doesn't.

Infuriating middle class, taxpaying business owners and families in order to garner favor with the Mexican Marxist Mafia is hardly a recipe for success. Check back on what really happened with the peso bailout a few years ago plus the benefits for housing, food, medical ,etc. illegals receive and it's obvious we've been sized up, set up and SOLD OUT. One day there will be hell to pay!

"What lies behind this political drift in Texas? Exactly the same force that is pushing once-reliable GOP states like California and Florida into, first, the "undecided" and eventually the "Democratic" column: demographic change driven by immigration. The Hispanic share of the population has risen sharply in these major states in the last 30 years; the Hispanic share of the electorate is now catching up, as immigrants become citizens and register to vote; and their votes heavily favor the Democrats. What has happened in California and now Texas is destined to happen in all the states with large concentrations of His panic immigrants. This is not a political prediction; it is a mathematical relationship.

A metaphor ... People that live in the country are used to getting cats and dogs dumped on their premises. The troublesome litter, the unwanted. It is a unwanted situation for the rural land owners but there it is .. either kill them or feed them, and perhaps find some a home. Rarely can the animals perform any beneficial services. It is a difficulty. A dilemma. While people and animals are not comparative as to worth or value there is a certain aptness to the metaphor.

Others, not living in the country, take little or no note of the situation. There is a limit to how many animals can be foistered off on others and there is a limit to how many new people can be accommadated, find a way to support theirselves and work into our system. Otherwise ... failure of the system...

The Australians way of not allowing new citizens into their country unless they can demonstrate a means of livelyhood and have means to support themselves is an excellent idea. IMO

I have naturalized friends (and family) from around the world, but I for one resent being invaded by legions of illegals that have no personal stake in the well-being of my country or the will to learn English and amalgamate into the melting pot of the Americal culture. They are parasites. I guess anyone who can't understand my sour attitude hasn't been sufficiently exposed to their mentality the way I have. Whatever else they may be, they are not my culture or mindset and never will be. A pox on the US officials who do nothing to stem the tide! God bless the illegals in their own lands, but keep'em outta here!
