President Bush: Please Bring Ted Maher Home From Banana-Republic Monaco!

American Green Beret veteran and accomplished neonatal nurse Ted Maher has now been held 537 days without trial in Monaco's prison on trumped-up and false charges -- charges of causing the deaths of billionaire banker Edmond Safra and Ted's fellow nurse, Vivian Torrente on December 3, 1999. In truth, Ted fought valiantly against two armed, masked intruders to defend Edmond and Vivian and save their lives. During the struggle, Ted suffered severe knife wounds that required one hundred staples to close.

Billionaire banker Edmond Safra was cooperating with the FBI, who was investigating the IMF/Russian loans. Needing a convenient scapegoat for the murder of Safra, Monaco police subjected Ted to three days of grueling torture designed to extort a false confession from him. (see description in "BASIC TIMELINE" in Thread 1 - http://206.112.97.70/forum/a3ad8b097272d.htm ).

Monaco continues to hold Ted incommunicado, preventing him from sending or receiving mail. In fact, they restrict his communication with his family to one telephone call a week. This call is only allowed to last a few minutes and is always monitored closely to prevent any discussion of the case. Ted is forced by his jailers to take a psychotropic medication and is regularly "interrogated" by the Monaco judge -- Patricia Richet. Reports have been received that Judge Richet is a violent person who has displayed unstable behavior in the past. She allegedly has a history of assaulting a fellow judge, putting him in the hospital for a week. She also tears up letters from Ted's children in front of Ted rather than let him read them.

Hundreds of family, friends, work associates, parents of patients, and Army veterans who served with Ted have vouched for him as being a loyal husband, loving father, and an exemplary professional of great skill and compassion. Ted has also been defended by then-chairman of the House International Relations Committee Ben Gilman and Ted's congresswoman Sue Kelly, who have written Prince Rainier III of Monaco on Ted's behalf. Monaco has no evidence of any crime by Ted; they have no witnesses and no credible case against him. Even worse, Monaco has planted false evidence and suppressed vast amounts of exculpatory evidence -- even passing a special Monaco law that enables them to hold Ted four years without trial.

The Geneva prosecutor has said that Safra was killed for his cooperation with the FBI regarding the laundering through Safra's Republic National Bank of $4.8 billion in IMF loans to Russia.

Regardless of the reason "why," it is obvious that Ted Maher is a scapegoat for a murder by others. We are working to obtain his release and to correct the grave injustice being done to an American Green beret veteran and medical professional.

DAY 1,013 WRONGLY IMPRISONED WITHOUT TRIAL ON EXTORTED FALSE CONFESSION

Regarding the Safra-Maher case: Synopsis and Queries Invited:

I have been contacted by a friend of Edmond's. The view that Ted Maher is a scapegoat is more widely held than publicly admitted.

Key to an understanding of the case is the extorted false confession. Monaco police held Ted in four-point restraint for three days, catheterized, sleep-deprived, threatened.

Monaco police kidnapped Ted's wife and stole her U.S. Passport, using it to pressure Ted to sign their prepared false confession in French which he does not read, write or speak. The Monaco police threatened to detain Ted's wife indefinitely, told Ted that they were strip-searching and torturing her.

Monaco police showed Ted and his wife photos of their three children, photos taken in the rural New York setting of their home, taken with no one's knowledge. Monaco police played recordings of the children's voices, recorded without anyone's knowledge.

Having thus obtained Ted's signature on their false confession, the baton was passed to the Monaco-appointed defense attorneys, Georges Blot and Donald Manasse. These have (for 1,013 days) insisted Ted stick to the false confession, to reaffirm it at every interrogation by magistrate, every hearing.

Monaco prosecutor Daniel Serdet told Time.com's Thomas Sancton that Ted was using drugs--but, Monaco's Princess Grace Memorial Hospital tested Ted and found him negatif negatif negatif for drugs and alcohol. Ted's wife has a file of 200-plus letters from family, friends, fellow soldiers (Special Forces 1978-81), medical colleagues (Ted was a neonatal nurse at Columbia Presbyterian), patients' parents, neighbors to the point that he has never used drugs.

Sancton used three persons in his initial story (December 20, 1999) who are bogus: the first wife declared by the court to be an unfit mother (Ted has custody of the child), a neighbor known to police as a nuisance, and a landlord who never rented to Ted.

The smear of Ted and scapegoating in a ridiculous fabricated plot conceals the actual details of Safra's death. It is maintained for no other reason.

The Monaco police failed to respond to calls for help--they have since managed to "lose" their emergency call tape for just this day, the 3d of December, 1999. But of course they have the tapes for the 2d and the 4th.

Ted used a scented candle, one which was always burning to mask Safra's diarrhea, to set off a smoke detector to summon help. This alarm was noted in the fire report as having occurred at 4:54 a.m.

Ted was rushed to the hospital immediately thereafter. Yet the fire report describes "a sudden conflagration at 6 a.m." and notes multiple sources of ignition. None of this was done by Ted.

Firemen were not allowed to reach Edmond Safra and Vivian Torrent until 7:45 a.m.--nearly three hours after the first alarm.

The autopsy notes infusion of blood of Vivian's thyroid and other infusions termed "bruising" yet states her cause of death as asphyxiation. She was spattered with Edmond's blood, yet he, too, is said to have died from asphyxiation.

Lily's second husband Alfredo "Freddy" Monteverde shot himself twice in the heart in Brazil in 1976 to leave her 210 million. Lily had changed Edmond's will shortly before his death. She changed their citizenship to Monagasque, finalized that day.

It was Lily who sent the security team to the palatial La Leopolda estate, leaving Edmond unprotected. It was almost certainly Lily who ordered the penthouse burglar alarm disconnected July 1, 1999, per the head of Monaco Securite.

Ted now has the active support of Michael Griffith who was featured in the film Midnight Express. Griffith has brought Dr. Michael Baden the noted forensic and DNA expert into Ted's defense. Dominick Dunne told Larry King in July of this year that he is "working every month on behalf of Ted Maher." Dunne was just proven correct in his conclusions regarding the Moxley-Skakel case.

Lily threw a $150,000 pound Renaissance party for 300 guests who paid $5,000 pounds each to attend--this included Prince Charles and Camilla and Elton John. She uses Howard Rubinstein for her publicity and he does the public relations for the New York Post. Neal Travis used to routinely slander Ted and laud Lily--but he's dead of cancer.

It's gone all Monaco's way as a result of power, not fact. Where fact has been exculpatory, it has been suppressed or altered or ignored.

As I've been researching this for over two years, I can't put everything into an email, and we can't include everything in any single post on the Free Republic threads or on Ted's brother Michael's site.

Henry Kissinger said at the time of Safra's death that it was done by someone capable of a cruel and vindictive act. The chief prosecutor of Geneva said Safra was killed for cooperating with the FBI regarding the laundering through Republic of $4.8 billion in IMF loans to Russia. Anne Williamson author of Contagion said she knew Ted was a scapegoat. Amy Waters Yarsinske who fought to keep the Scott Speicher case alive is now working on Ted's case.

I realize that hindsight's 20/20; however...
From the very beginning (of my involvement with Ted Maher's situation...) THIS is why I was so adamantly opposed to learn Ted would be pleading "guilty" to ANYTHING, with this flakey bunch in the Monaco legal *system*!

Ted Maher's innocent; &, there was & IS only one true, surefire way to drive that point home: plead innocent.

As it is now, apparently, Ted's sitting in a Monaco jail and regardless of what his plea would've been.
Absent any "plea bargained" guarentees, Ted really didn't have much more to lose by standing his ground.

As sweet *Lily* is the only person who'd stand to gain a *thing* with Ted Maher's continued incarceration.
Lily would preferrably *like* seeing Ted Maher tried & found "guilty" just asap so this case would be formally closed once & for all.

Scott Speicher is alive; Skakel is guilty; Ted is innocent.

Amy Waters Yarsinske, a former intelligence officer and Pulitzer Prize nominee, author of No One Left Behind: The Lieutenant Commander Michael Scott Speicher Story, began her dogged pursuit of the current tidal wave of support years ago--and is now taking up the case of Ted Maher.

In yesterday's speech to the UN, President Bush referred to Speicher:

During his speech to the United Nations on September 12, 2002, President Bush alluded to Captain Speicher's imprisonment in Iraq. He recalled each instance that Iraq has defied a United Nation Security Council resolution. He referred to Captain Speicher when he recounted how Iraq had ignored resolutions 686 and 687, as quoted below:

"In 1991, the U.N. Security Council, through Resolutions 686 and 687, demanded that Iraq return all prisoners from Kuwait and other lands. Iraq's regime agreed. It broke its promise. Last year the Secretary-General's high-level coordinator of this issue reported that Kuwaiti, Saudi, Indian, Syrian, Lebanese, Iranian, Egyptian, Bahraini, and Omani nationals remain unaccounted for -- more than 600 people. One American pilot is among them."

Even after years of imprisonment, the tireless efforts of friends and family, and the penetrating journalism of a first-class writer brought the closed case of an American through the bureaucratic warehouse into the President's speech to the U.N.

In similar fashion, the murder of Martha Moxley was an unavenged outrage smoldering for years before the crusader in formal attire nailed the perp to the barn door.

Skakel is doing twenty to life, and Dominick Dunne turns his crime-solving skills to right the record for Ted Maher in the mysterious death of Edmond Safra.

Dunne put it bluntly to King: "I am absolutely fighting every month for Ted Maher... "

Captain Dreyfus was framed for treason, imprisoned on Devil's Island, championed by Emile Zola, freed, and pardoned.

As the efforts of a dedicated group of family and friends led to a congressional resolution and presidential intercession that freed Navy veteran Ed Pope from Moscow's Lefortovo Prison, so, too, will the persistent efforts of Ted Maher's family, friends and champions increase the pressure on Monaco to free him.

The brutal murder of an inconvenient world-class billionaire banker has been covered up by the police state which harbors the world's largest money laundry.
