Ted Maher -- former Special Forces; Neonatal Intensive Care nurse

 

American Green Beret veteran and accomplished neonatal nurse Ted Maher has now been held 537 days without trial in Monaco's prison on trumped-up and false charges -- charges of causing the deaths of billionaire banker Edmond Safra and Ted's fellow nurse, Vivian Torrente on December 3, 1999. In truth, Ted fought valiantly against two armed, masked intruders to defend Edmond and Vivian and save their lives. During the struggle, Ted suffered severe knife wounds that required one hundred staples to close.

Billionaire banker Edmond Safra was cooperating with the FBI, who was investigating the IMF/Russian loans. Needing a convenient scapegoat for the murder of Safra, Monaco police subjected Ted to three days of grueling torture designed to extort a false confession from him. (see description in "BASIC TIMELINE" in Thread 1 - http://206.112.97.70/forum/a3ad8b097272d.htm ).

Monaco continues to hold Ted incommunicado, preventing him from sending or receiving mail. In fact, they restrict his communication with his family to one telephone call a week. This call is only allowed to last a few minutes and is always monitored closely to prevent any discussion of the case. Ted is forced by his jailers to take a psychotropic medication and is regularly "interrogated" by the Monaco judge -- Patricia Richet. Reports have been received that Judge Richet is a violent person who has displayed unstable behavior in the past. She allegedly has a history of assaulting a fellow judge, putting him in the hospital for a week. She also tears up letters from Ted's children in front of Ted rather than let him read them.

Hundreds of family, friends, work associates, parents of patients, and Army veterans who served with Ted have vouched for him as being a loyal husband, loving father, and an exemplary professional of great skill and compassion. Ted has also been defended by then-chairman of the House International Relations Committee Ben Gilman and Ted's congresswoman Sue Kelly, who have written Prince Rainier III of Monaco on Ted's behalf. Monaco has no evidence of any crime by Ted; they have no witnesses and no credible case against him. Even worse, Monaco has planted false evidence and suppressed vast amounts of exculpatory evidence -- even passing a special Monaco law that enables them to hold Ted four years without trial.

The Geneva prosecutor has said that Safra was killed for his cooperation with the FBI regarding the laundering through Safra's Republic National Bank of $4.8 billion in IMF loans to Russia.

Regardless of the reason "why," it is obvious that Ted Maher is a scapegoat for a murder by others. We are working to obtain his release and to correct the grave injustice being done to an American Green beret veteran and medical professional.

Ted Maher -- a giver of life, not a taker -- needs our help.

The new October issue of Vanity Fair has come out. This month Dominick Dunne did write about the Safra case. Here is the excerpt -

"One of the many inexplicable things about the death of Edmond Safra in Monte Carlo in December 1999 is why he didn't come out of the fortified bathroom where he suffered an excruciating death, along with Vivian Torrente. Granted, he was overmedicated and paranoid, according to sources close to him, and one of his nurses told me he had terrible nightmares, screamed in his sleep, and was terrified of being murdered. But even though the smoke that would slowly kill him and his nurse kept seeping in under the door, he refused to open it. Now there's a new twist in the story. Apparently, Torrente, a 50-year-old married Filipina from New Jersey, did try to get out of the bathroom. In the recently translated French autopsy report, there are indications that a struggle may have taken place between Safra and his employee.

According to information I have received, there was Safra DNA under Torrente's fingernails and Torrente DNA under Safra's fingernails. Furthermore, there were unexplained bruises on Torrente's body, as well as "combat-like" bruises on the back of her neck. I have long known about the back-of-the-neck bruise, but I had not heard about the other ones until recently. There was also blood in her thyroid, and Safra's blood was on her bra and undergarment.

Several diaries back, I wrote that there had allegedly been an immediate payoff to Torrente's widower by the Safra estate. Even as I write, the famous medical examiner Michael Baden, whom I met at the O.J. Simpson trial, is studying the autopsy report. Baden and a host of other expert witnesses -- on fire, police work, security, medical care, safe rooms -- have joined the team being put together by Michael Griffith, the American lawyer representing Ted Maher. Griffith, who gained international fame as the lawyer for Billy Hayes, who was busted for drugs in Turkey in 1970 and whose story was made into the film "Midnite Express", intends to prove that had it not been for the incompetence of the Monaco police and fire services Safra and Torrente would still be alive."

Dunne's attention to this can not be overstated, I believe. I almost cried with joy when I saw the King transcripts. What a blessing to your family. Sadly that is often what it takes, "star power", in this media-driven age.

Monaco's lies unravel.

Monaco police GOT the "confession" they wanted out of Ted Maher.

These Ted Maher threads on Free Republic have continually stressed that outrageous fact.

Once an honorable person has been slandered, smeared and demonized, it is very difficult to restore his reputation.

Monaco prosecutor Daniel Serdet fed this false confession to Time.com's Thomas Sancton for the December 20, 1999 article.

Sancton used three other reporters and three plausible yet bogus "witnesses" to flesh out the original Serdet lie.

Ted made clear beginning with the visit of the Consul December 8, 1999, that "what I do, I do for the safety of my family".

The bruising on the back of his head ("occipital") noted in Monaco's appellate document is consistent with Ted's account of having been hit on the back of the head.

The bruising of his toes is consistent with the account of having been snatched off the street into a van and having his toes broken with a hammer--by whom?

Ted slipped a piece of paper to the consul in that first visit with the two words "Russian Italian".

Now, in the third year, we have a writer of the stature of Dominick Dunne telling Larry King before a national audience, "I am absolutely fighting every month for Ted Maher."

This after a thousand days is a big boost.

It was only after a year and a half, June of last year, that a national audience was told, by this same famous writer, that Ted's confession was got out of him.

Dunne tenaciously pursued his instincts and evidence in the Moxley-Skakel case, and was vindicated.

He's now pursuing the Safra-Maher case with the same intensity.

Dr. Michael Baden is certain to have much to say about the forensic evidence--particularly the infusion of blood of Vivian's thyroid, and her other infusions, the "combat bruising" in Dunne's language.

Michael Griffith is already pursuing various nullities, not the least of which is Ted's illegal interogation without attorney present.

The Monaco kidnapping and passport theft committed against Heidi and her brother are the subject of a separate suit working its way through New York court.

[Oddly, Lily's retained Stanley Arkin who successfully defended Natasha Kagalovsky, wife of Konstantin Kagalovsky, former head of Russia's Menatep Bank.]

The Safra family filed objections, and Lily retained Brendan Sullivan, who successfully defended Oliver North in Iran-Contra, an epic irony considering the Iran-Contra allegations described in Brian Burroughs' Vendetta.]

The Marseilles Consulate announces the departure of Martha Melzow and her replacement by Ellen B. Thurburn as Consul. Thurburn was most recently Consul in Estonia, and prior to that, Benin.

Ted's latest priest "broke his hip" and thus is "unable to visit".

Ted's prior two priests were removed for their sympathetic support.

Judge Richet departed for Paris, suddenly and without explanation--odd, as her unprecedented second term had not expired--

Odder still, for as Profonde Gorge said, she'd got that reappointment because "she is obedient to the police".
