March 20, 2002 -- IF representatives of a particular industry lobbied for a law that gave them a monopoly on disseminating information about political campaigns and candidates, wouldn't Americans be outraged?

Of course, they would.

Such a law would contradict two important principles: first, that government should not grant monopolies, and second, that Congress should not violate freedom of speech and of the press.

What part of "no law" does Congress not get?

Now, the New York Post doesn't really need us to answer that question, do they? ;)

Then, again, I wouldn't exactly complain if there were to be a Constitutional amendment saying, Congress shall make no law, and the President shall sign no law, until or unless each member and the President has proven that they have read it in entirety at least once.

Agreed. I too am outraged. But when we expect politicians to do us favors with someone else's money every day, we have little reason to complain now when constitutionally forcible rape runs over the hapless First Amendment like an unstoppable juggernaut. The truth of the matter is we have let politicians violate their oath of office every day for decades and this move simply the icing on the cake. There's no longer a true constitutional Republic and Ben Franklin's wise words come to mind, we decided it wasn't worth keeping. We've decided being gagged in the mouth is an acceptable price to pay for the government giving us more entitlements.

Excellent article. This is one of the best I've seen on so-called campaign finance reform.

The reason money enters politics is that politicians have so much say over so much of our lives.

The more power government exerts over people's lives, the more people are willing to pay to have a say in how that power is used, for good or ill.

Exactamundo!!TRUE reform would be a major scaling back of the size of the federal gov't.!!

As promised on another thread, here are my comments occerning the latest upsetting & distressing developments in this matter.

It now appears that our very last hope is the SCOTUS. The vote is today and President Bush has signaled that he would go ahead and sign the bill.

If this law, (Thie issues ads ban part of it, anyway) is allowed to stand, it will most likely have major ramifications for the christians and conservatives of America.

What I forsee happening here is that America will end up being a one party dictatorship run by Democrats.

I also see a situation where christians and conservatives, essentially all critics and adversaries of the Democrats will end up being classified by the goverment as a public health menace to their own communities.

I also see where we as christians and conservatives will not be allowed to own bussinesses, teach in schools, travel freely, practice certain professions, be allowed access to vital services such as medical or financial. I also expect we will end up having special taxes and fees placed on us as well as all our personal property and belongings registered with the goverment and also have limits placed on how much money we can have in our accounts and end up having to surrender excess without compensation.

I also see public health campaigns against christians and conservatives in mass media becoming succesful to the point of some people being ostercized out of their own communities.

I also see christians and conservatives being subjected to random inspections by goverment appointed brownshirts as well.

I see this all happening as a result of very bad legislation being enacted in the time frame prior to elections because of the fact that we will not be allowed legally to address these things prior to elections as this law is written.

I'm afraid this law is going to end up doing more harm than good. This law WILL NOT reform anything. all it's going to do is empower Democrats and the media to do enormous and grave harm to this country. Somehing which we really don't need right now.
Regards.

This is far and away the biggest problem...

Our freedom is just about gone...

Yeah, I'm afraid so.

BTW, I understand the Senate is now in session. We don't get C-Span 2 here where live so maybe some others who do can keep us posted on what's going on.

Right now they are discussing how much time they'll need to speak but they have to fit it around a meeting at the White House.
