He added that Bush's decision to stay on the sidelines and not come out against the legislation made it more difficult to fight. "If the president had indicated an antipathy it certainly would have made it easier to defeat it," he said.

Sad. What a shame.

Posters to this thread are characterizing this as a great republican defeat.

For me, it's as simple as "oaths mean something". ALL of these politicians swore an oath to uphold and protect the constitution.
Most of this bill is demonstrably unconstitutional, and should have been laughed off of the House floor,
yet, it's heading to the President's desk to be signed into the law of the land, or to be vetoed.
Members of Congress have not upheld their oaths, will the President?

Bush ain't gonna veto. He sees signing the bill as a win win. The courts will knock off the most egregious stuff, he THINKS he negates McCain and he KNOWS the public, who don't know or care, reaction to his signing will be a net positive.

Major league disappointment for me when he does.

Wow! Such cowardice hasn't been seen since...well since the last time the Republican senators caved in to the Democrats on an issue. Someone please explain to me again, for the umpteenth time, why this party deserves my support?

I think the President is going to save us from this bill.

Nope. No elected official wants to be in the crosshairs come election time. This will be defeated in the Court so the 'Pubs hands are clean.

""It's a very fine moment," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz"

Yes, all of the training and indoctrination he underwent in the Hanoi Hilton as paid off. He has eliminated the First Ammendment to that document of hate, the Constitution of the United States of America. He is in line for an Order of Lenin.

If they know it is unconstitutional, then they are violating their oath of office to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America..".
