Hispanics are not worth courting - they are only 13% of the population, they don't contribute money, they don't vote, they are concentrated in a few states that are - for the most part - not battleground states.

Uh, wrong.
Still, blinded by fear and hate, I see.

I don't think you can make the case this is what Bush is thinking.

I don't know what Bush is thinking. I just commented that his polciy is consistant with Christian teachings. Take that for whatever it means.

Bush is toast in 2004! Toast I tell you.

Given up after one year, huh?

Just stating a fact. He has alienated the conservative base and will not get elected as a Republican again.

He has alienated his base with this ONE issue, however he has engaged the base on a host of other issues as well. Remember when Ronald Reagan gave amnesty to illegals in the 80's? Did he get re-elected? Did his VP get elected after that?

Well, now that you reveal your true mental capacities and your very ugly nature, I won't expect you to read much on this forum-you certainly demonstrate some limitations. Try to avoid those slanders-they may give you trouble.

The criminal alien problem has become much larger-it may well overshadow other issues. If the 9-11 events were not sufficient to alarm the voters in his base, we may well face more such events. I would not want to be in the administration after that day.

I think you are right. President Bush wants a larger amnesty program and this is a baby step in that direction. I don't understand why he has such a blind spot in this area. Whoever is advising him (unless it is his idea) is sadly underestimating the effect this issue has on the conservative base. I appears to me to be similar to his father's mistake with "read my lips". It is just a dumb move with a possible large downside. I hope I have misread this, but I don't think I have.

Bush does seem to want amnesty as much as the Dems. I don't get it.

" "We've been attacked, illegal immigrants have NO RIGHT to be here." Why is this simple concept so hard to grasp? " Exactly. I don't know why some don't grasp it. I particularly don't understand why President Bush doesn't understand. It baffles me.

Absolutely, the loss of base support swamps any imagined political gain. Plus it is wrong to reward illegal immigrants.

You should consider the story-telling business. This is a major embarrassment for Bush. Mexico does not care about how our system of govt works, it only needed to see results which it will not get. I am all about good relations with neighbors, but believe that strong fences make better neighbors.

~~~~~~~~
If neighbors respected each others boudaries without having to mark them, you wouldn't need fences.
"It is lunacy — sheer lunacy — that the president would request, and the House would pass, such an amnesty at this time.
Its lunacy anytime, and bush is messing up, big time.
Someone please explain how it is politically expedient to oppose a bill "That a majority of the country is overwhelmingly against"?
Why do Amo Houghton and Ron Paul embrace Bob Byrd's position? Are they unprincipled lowlifes too?
