Hispanics nationwide have a stake in the Texas governor's race. Laredo businessman and millionaire Tony Sanchez won the Democratic primary by about a 2 to 1 margin. If Sanchez unseats Republican Gov. Rick Perry in November, he will become the first Hispanic governor of Texas. Texas, following California, also would become the second state in which Hispanic voters put an end to Republican dominance.
In California, Hispanic voters were something of a sleeping giant. That all changed with the administration of Pete Wilson, the Republican governor who stupidly decided to exploit the state's xenophobes and bash immigrants. Wilson blamed immigrants - legal and illegal - for just about everything from lousy schools and health care to the failure to achieve world peace.
Faced with such abuse, the sleeping giant woke up. Voter registration drives became a favorite pastime in Hispanic neighborhoods. In 1998, Gray Davis became the first Democratic governor of California in 16 years.
He trounced his Republican opponent Dan Lungren, drawing 58 percent of the vote; Lungren got 38 percent. Davis captured just about every voter block except for white men, Republicans and Protestants. He carried Hispanics by a great margin. The Texas primary race, similarly, drew a heavy Hispanic vote in the southern part of the state. Observers said more Hispanics were moved to vote. While the major Democratic candidates both were Hispanic, Sanchez said his opponent, Dan Morales, was embarrassed to be Hispanic.
Sanchez reportedly spent about $18 million to defeat Morales. This is a record for a Texas primary, and it reflects an odd element to the general election. Sanchez is new to politics and wealthy. The family fortune is said to be $600 million. He reportedly threw as much as $13 million of his own money into his campaign kitty.
Hispanics are the fastest growing minority in the country. And as they increase, so too does their political influence. This is the most important political trend since Richard Nixon launched his successful southern strategy in which he urged conservative southern Democrats to switch to the Republican Party. It's a trend that could affect Illinois, New Jersey and some southern states where there is growing Hispanic influence.
Secondly, the social state has to be eliminated.
The mindset of most Americans is insane. If we are to survive in the long run, the immigration situation has to be fixed.
I don't think that's really the issue too much --- who would want unlimited immigration from Europe now that most of them have become comfortable with Socialism? I certainly don't. I voted for Keyes --I'd be perfectly happy to have a black president and a Supreme Court filled with men like Thomas --and Scalia. I can think of quite a few good black conservatives. I know there's hispanic conservatives too but I don't know of any ---maybe they're all in Florida so I wouldn't know them, I also like Reagan type whites --but not the Clintons.
Now I understand. It's not about immigration.
Yep and the CFR, Buildingdemburgers, Illuninuts, Triplelats, and helping this President's vision come true....
The truth of the matter is, if we take this crowd and if we could go through and ask the heritage, the background of every family represented here, we would probably come up with the names of every country on earth, every corner of the world, and every race. Here, is the one spot on earth where we have the brotherhood of man. And maybe as we continue with this proudly, this brotherhood of man made up from people representative of every corner of the earth, maybe one day boundaries all over the earth will disappear as people cross boundaries and find out that, yes, there is a brotherhood of man in every corner.
So be careful.... very careful.
Secondly, there's common sense to what I'm saying. If you actually care about the nation surviving, at least in the first world sense, the immigration problem has to be solved.
Trying to slander any individual with the race card, even if race is a part of the conversation, shows a serious deficiency in real debate, not to mention a serious, vile attitude at which one is "out for blood". Get off your high horse.
Answer the question? Will you not be happy until white people are a minority in America? Or, do you favor immigration policies that will reduce white people to a minority in the country within 20 years? If you do, then I could assume that you're a racist. However, prejudice of white people is held up on a high pedestal as being morally and superiorally right.
Let me ask you a defining question FF, would you rather live in an America populated with Thomas Sowell's and Linda Chavez's, or one with Ted Turner's and Alec Baldwin's
The latter of course (Sowells and Chavezes).
So of course by this criterion I can only assume you're an immigration opponent, since the overwhelming majority of immigrants are on the opposite side of the political spectrum from Sowell and Chavez.
Tell me again: what percentage of the black and hispanic vote went to GWB in 2000?
I find it absolutly amazing where some people's priorities lie. I mean, the mere thought of an english speaking, native born, American citizen smoking a joint in the privacy of his own living room is enough to make you hit the ceiling and begin demanding that federal troops break the guy's door down, drag him off in the middle of the night, and auction off his property. And yet the thought of millions of unassimilated, non-english speaking criminal illegal aliens crossing our borders at will, and worse yet, seizing control of our political and legal system through their lobbying groups and 5th colum left-wing agitators right here on our own soil has you standing up and cheering.
You are a strange being indded, Dane!
I can assure you , and I have this from unimpeachable sources: they had very good intentions.
Now I understand. This isn't about keeping out those dirty uneducated masses from Central America, it's about getting in those dirty uneducated masses from Eastern Europe. Well, I guess if someone is going to mug you, you'll feel better if there complexion tends toward tope.
Scalia? But isn't he...ITALIAN? I think we need to put an end to those dirty uneducated garlic eaters flooding our shores. And while you're at it, let's keep out the micks and jews, they aren't much better.
NAFTA hurt this area a lot --except for a few people who were already doing okay before NAFTA anyhow. What NAFTA did here was to immediately send out 12,000 seamtresses jobs (in this area) to Mexico leaving many non-English speaking people without jobs. One big problem with NAFTA is that the jobs over there pay about $3 a day and Mexicans aren't stupid and know getting over here will still get them a better life than $3 a day ever will, even if they can't get a job they'll do better here. For the 38% people on the border with no high school diploma or GED or Spanish GED, they have the exact same skills and education as the people in Mexico who will get their jobs partly because the minimum wage is so much lower. None returned to Mexico to keep their jobs which shows it's not really a free market for jobs.
For some reason good jobs are also leaving the area. I've read that's due to the lack of skills and low education levels ---so we've lost the good jobs and low paying jobs.
No, CALICO!
