Where is the ethical point at which to drop out of the discussion when you still have more to say but don't have time to keep going on it?

There is no responsibility to reply, unless you post a vanity asking a stupid question, in which case you should at least give the appearance of being interested in the replies.

If you've been on this forum since "1999" -- as per your profile page -- and still haven't figured out the answer to this question, then, you should run for president on the Dem ticket. Al Gore was in public service for 25 years and still hadn't learned how to give a speech. You'd be real competition for him! :)

Either find the time to logically and definatively finish them off with irrefutable facts, destroying their argument or send them an e-mail!

For one thing, never reply to a vanity post.

But, if you need an excuse, tell them you have to go take a shower.

Just make every post longer than your last one. That's my strategy anyway.

If you're just straight up trying to get out of the discussion, post about 20 paragraphs concerning the Illuminati. Only the most hardcore will stay with you then. I've never done this myself, but am observant and have noticed that is a good way to silence someone. It might be handy to keep some of that good stuff on a file on your hard drive so you can just cut and paste.

Hey Nevada. Now you can reply to post #29 with a "Bite Me" and that should take care of that response. See, it's easy.

All replies must cease when;

1)Either party calls the other one a Nazi.
2)The words cheese, moose, or Hobbit Hole appear anywhere in the response.

If you find yourself at an impasse it's wise to solicit the opinion of someone who is never wrong. Unfortunately, my time is limited and I can't have everyone asking me to make judgments about their arguments. ;-)

Seriously, I usually just say, "Gotta run, I'll be back later." or some variation of that.

Along the same lines as your request, I have a statement I would like to make.

IMHO, I think it very, very rude when someone calls you into a thread...I call it trolling, others call it a bang list, and they do not even have the courtesy to respond/acknowledge your comment. If you do not want discourse on a thread you post, do not troll people to it.

If I am trolled to a thread, and I respond, if the troller does not respond to, at times, lenghty and thought out responses, I will never answer the persons call again. Some veterans surely have paid the dues over time, and we understand each other's politico...the newbies, who troll and have me on their list, are marked and discarded quickly.

If you have something to say and feel like saying it, you should respond unless:

The polls are only open for another hour and you haven't yet voted for the best conservative;
Brook Burke is lounging on your bed in lingerie and waiting for you;
Your signs are made, you're wearing your buttons, and your ride is waiting to go Freep a liberal;
Flood waters have risen within four inches of your computer or electrical outlets;
Your wife has been in labor for over ninety minutes and needs a ride to the hospital;
Some thug has broken into your home and needs to be shot;
Your Freepathon check is still on the mantle waiting to be mailed;
Your child hasn't eaten for a day and is whining pitiably;
You don't have the sense of humor to take these comments in the spirit they were intended.

I have found that 17 responses are quite enough. Any more than that and one becomes repetitive.

Common sense should be the guideline. IMHO the only things that are inconsiderate are: People who don't read the article posted for discussion before replying; and people who post articles and just walk away without replying to anyone.

It depends. The rules are different if it's a "flame war". You are morally obligated to hash out your differences in front of the rest of us in order to provide us with "Geraldo Style" entertainment, but in a conservative format.

In all seriousness, it really does depends upon what the point of the discussion is. Sometimes it's just plain old fun to keep it out there especially in a flame war, so others can join in. Often it's a DU Lurker, whom we can all work together to verbally reduce them to a quivering mound of jello.

That's becomming more and more difficult these days. The moderators are moving on DU Lurkers faster than we can "have at them". There was one fellow who made a nonsensical accusation against GW followed by a threat of violence. He became "No current Freeper by that name" so fast I couldn't get my jab in. *grin*
