Sounds like a simple navigation error, I wouldn't make too much of it. U.S. Army patrols occassionally stumbled into Czechoslovakia during the Cold War. On at least one occassion they were collected by local lightly armed gendarmes, disarmed, detained and returned. I heard a story about a Pershing Missile battery looking for Grafenwehr training area, showing up at the Czechoslovak border. Fortunately, the local border guard didn't let them in.

Sounds like one to me, too.

On the other hand, something has got to be done to fix the problem. Like I just said to hubby before reading the replies, Bill O'Reilly has the right idea. (BUMP to the FReepers who said the same thing before me)

I heard the same story, but with a modern Urban Assault Vehicle disguised as a green and white large recreational vehicle. The vehicle contained an incredibly well armed, self-trained crack assault team who upon learning that some of their buddies were under arrest in a foreign land, crashed the border, rescued their friends, took on and disabled a few tanks, blew up a few buildings and returned safeley back home.

All the while proving the value of this experimental Urban Assault Vehicle disguised as a large green RV.

They were hailed as heroes, and were pictured on magazine covers everywhere.

It's true. I saw it on TV!

That would likely fall under the heading of "urban (or Army) legend" for several reasons: Pershing units were all based well back of the Inter-German and Czech borders; there was no reason for them to go to Graf because they could not conduct live fire there (that was either done in the US or in Scotland); Pershing was a theater asset and maneuver of those assets near the border would have been a significant provocation to the Warsaw Pact.

You are avoiding reality. These guys were most probably protecting smugglers. If you don't live out here you have no clue as to what goes on. There are alot more incursions that do not get reported. The rural areas of Eastern San Diego county are a war zone with constant smuggling and other crimes. Many people have moved out of their ranches because of the constant problems. Washington does not care. I suspect money is being made in many places that allows this to go on.
