Windshield death suspect back in jail

Bail raised to $250,000; FW woman taken into custody for third time

03/09/2002

By NANCY CALAWAY / The Dallas Morning News

FORT WORTH - A woman accused of hitting a man with her car and leaving him to die, entangled in her windshield, returned to jail Friday when a judge raised her bail from $10,000 to $250,000.

Video
Chante J. Mallard, 25, was booked into the Tarrant County Jail on Friday afternoon on a murder charge the third time she has been incarcerated in 10 days in connection with the October death of Gregory G. Biggs, 37.

Even if the bail is met, Ms. Mallard will spend the weekend in jail. Probation officers in charge of monitoring bond conditions cannot pick her up until Monday morning, said Lt. Mack West, jail supervisor.

Her bond conditions, which 371st District Judge James Wilson set during a hearing, include being under house arrest at her parents' Fort Worth home, wearing an electronic monitor, no driving, no alcohol use, and drug testing three times a week.

Judge Wilson also placed a gag order on Ms. Mallard's lawyer and on prosecutors in the case. Her parents attended the hearing but declined to comment.

Ms. Mallard, a nurse's aide who was fired Thursday after the murder charge became public, sobbed in the courtroom and continually dabbed her eyes with a tissue before sheriff's deputies led her away.

During the hourlong hearing, defense attorney Mike Heiskell brought Ms. Mallard's parents and her brother, a lieutenant with the Fort Worth Fire Department, to testify about the former Girl Scout's willingness to attend future court proceedings.

"I guarantee you she's not going anywhere. She doesn't have anywhere to go and doesn't know where to go," Mr. Heiskell said, asking the judge to "look past the emotion and determine what is right and just."

But Assistant District Attorney Richard Alpert argued that the $10,000 bond Ms. Mallard posted Wednesday was insufficient and that she has an unstable work history and sought counseling only after she was charged in Mr. Biggs' death.

"It's no secret the community is outraged by her actions," Mr. Alpert said. "This defendant has friends who helped her cover up the crime."

Police said Ms. Mallard struck Mr. Biggs in October as he walked along U.S. Highway 287 near the Loop 820 split, and then drove home with him entangled in her windshield.

Although he was severely injured, Mr. Biggs, a former school bus driver and bricklayer who was homeless at the time of the accident, was not dead, police said. Ms. Mallard left him trapped in her car, which she hid in the garage of her home on the south side of Fort Worth, investigators said.

Police said that Ms. Mallard repeatedly apologized to the injured man, checking on him several times over a two- or three-day period, but that she never summoned help. After Mr. Biggs died, Ms. Mallard and at least one friend dumped his body in a nearby park, where he was found Oct. 27, police said.

A woman came to police in February, saying Ms. Mallard admitted to the crime at a party, police said. Investigators questioned Ms. Mallard and arrested her Feb. 26 on a felony charge of failure to stop and render aid.

Mrs. Mallard posted a $5,000 bond that day, but she was arrested a second time after police upgraded the charge to murder Wednesday. She was released that day after posting a $10,000 bond.

A trial date has not been set.

Police said Friday that they are continuing to investigate the case and are looking for anyone else who may have helped dump Mr. Biggs' body.

From the DMN article:

What's up with this Meek? Have the Fort Worth D.A. and police gotten a case of the "Buckwheats"(thank you captain Dan)? This whole episode(at least from what I've read) makes little sense. It's almost as if the local LE community are falling all over themselves trying to give this, uh, THING a pass. Developing???????

I think I read it was about 3AM. The few times I have been out driving at that time there was very little traffic even on the express ways.

I would imagine that would be the only way something like that could happen in Fort Worth..

Yes and you have to remember that too many of the people that are out driving at that time are intoxicated so they may not have noticed or remembered (as hard as that is to imagine.

P.S. I was not intoxicated when I was out at that time of the morning. My husband and I were on our way to the hospital.(Just in case anyone was wondering.)

I'm not some apologist for bad behavior by blacks, but her "white guy" remark could well be just how you refer to white guys there.
What you are saying could be true, except the informant said she giggled when she said she had hit a white guy.

Ya, you could well be true on this point. Somehow, decency seems to be a trait that she doesn't have. Either way she should fry and her racism shouldn't be part of it.

Thanks for the ping, bud... Didn't I read somewhere that the att'y tried to discredit Miranda or whoever the f she was by claiming that she had it out for Chante or something... This is bizarre. That wench is the main perpetrator in this and the informant gets the death threats? Is it OK to whack homeless white dudes these days? I'd like to hear some folks' defense of this sort of thing, y'knowwhatI'msayin'... This is bullsh!t.

Good posts bro-- Dallas was cold the other day but I'm headin' for the border! It's good to be back in God's Country. I'll catch up with ya in a couple days...

Everything about this story is bizarre it seems. I got back last night about 7:30. If I wasn't out at my Dad's I would have suggested we meet somewhere, but the timing was bad this time. Let me know when you're gonna be back in the Dallas area and maybe we can have lunch or something if ya want to.

It will be interesting to see what liberal pop icon pops out of the woodwork to defend the defenseless, once again.

I think you meant to say "to defend the infedensible".

This story just broke last Thursday. What happened is they first charged her with hit & run, no bail required. Then, as the investigation revealed her heightened involvement, the charges were raised to murder with bail at $10,000. When the bail was raised to $250,000 she spent the past weekend in the Ft. Worth pokey, but was expected to post bail Monday.

My understanding from another FReeper that knows her brother (who is a fireman - in Fort Worth, I think), her Dad owns a number of rent houses. I think the house she lives in belongs to her Dad. I'm sure Daddy is posting the bail money. The last I saw she was expected to get out yesterday, but I didn't see an update on the story today yet. . .

When I find one, I'll post it here on FR. . .

I guess I'm really behind the power curve here. Do you have any ideas why bail for a murder charge would increase from 10 G's to 250 G's????? It almost looks like Tarant County is setting up a losing case, and I wonder why?

Anyway, if you're keeping abreast, would you mind *pinging* me with any updates? Thanks.

Texas Coroner Says Man Died Quickly

By Associated Press
March 12, 2002, 9:25 PM EST

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The county medical examiner said Tuesday that a homeless man who was struck by a car and lodged in the broken windshield likely only lived for a few hours with a nearly amputated leg -- not a few days as police have estimated.

Police had said Gregory Glenn Biggs, 37, probably died two or three days after his head was trapped in the windshield during the hit-and-run accident.

But Tarrant County's coroner, Dr. Nizam Peerwani, said Biggs likely would have died within hours, or possibly a day, from blood loss. Peerwani said he will review police and crime lab reports to determine a more exact time of death.

"Based on preservation of the body, I would suggest it is not anymore than a day or so," Peerwani said. "He couldn't have died instantaneously."

Chante J. Mallard, a 25-year-old nurses aide, told police she hit a man along a Fort Worth highway on Oct. 26, then ignored his cries for help as she drove home with him stuck to her car, according to an affidavit.

Authorities say Mallard left Biggs to die in her garage and her friends later dumped his body in a park. Two men found Biggs' body Oct. 27.

Police spokesman Duane Paul said another woman tipped officers that she was at a party in mid-February and overheard Mallard discussing the accident and how it had taken Biggs days to die.

"We're trying to sort through everything and determine exactly what the time frame was," Paul said Tuesday.

Authorities initially said Biggs would have lived if he had received medical attention. He had no internal injuries.

Mallard is charged with murder and being held on $250,000 bail. Her attorney, Mike Heiskell, did not return telephone messages seeking comment Tuesday.

Hey bro, I'd dig a beer or three sometime... Sit around and gritch about Congress or something... ;) This weekend is kinda crowded-- the ol' ball'n'chain-to-be is dragging my happy Republican a$$ around Dallas with friends and whatnot this weekend and dumbass me goes and schedules a plane back right smack in the middle of Saint Paddy's Day so I don't envision it happening but I'll be back, you better depend upon it. Hey I'm thinkin' of road-trippin' down around Texas for a couple weeks sometime this summer, possibly on a motorcycle if I can get my sh!t together and avoid killing myself-- I'll definitely pencil you in, bro... What kinda bars you got around yer neck of the woods?

Well, it's been a little while, but Dave & Busters is kinda neat. My best buddy and I go there when he's in town from Illinois. Ever been there or heard of it? It's a HUGE hangout with about 50,000 sq. ft. of playgrounds for all folks! Acres of video game, including race cars, skiiing stuff, 2-3 restaurants and many bars there!

I am pretty open to that. Guess we can carry our guns and go over to Harry Hines Blvd. That'll give ya a thrill, I'm sure!
