Tancredo doubts he can block amnesty-extension bill
Denver Post ^ | March 8, 2002 | Bill McAllister

Friday, March 08, 2002 - WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo takes credit for thwarting the Bush administration's last effort to offer partial amnesty to thousands of illegal residents, but Thursday the outspoken immigration foe said he may have been outmaneuvered by the White House.

President Bush has struck a deal with the House leadership to place legislation that offers an extension of amnesty on its consent calendar before Bush heads to Mexico for a state visit next week, the Colorado Republican said.

That action should ensure quick House passage of legislation that Bush has repeatedly sought from Congress. It would allow an undocumented person to receive legal standing, such as a valid green card, by filing a declaration with the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

It presumably also would require the person to have been in the United States by a certain date and have filed a declaration with the INS from an appropriate sponsor, such as a relative or employer, and pay a $1,000 penalty.

"The terms are still up in the air," said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration, a group that has been allied with Tancredo. "We've heard to the effect that the president wants something to bring down to Mexico."

The initial Bush proposal, designed exclusively for Mexicans, once was high on the president's legislative wish list, but it was delayed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. However, as the president noted Wednesday in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, he now is pushing for the extension of the amnesty program known by the section of immigration law that covers it, Section 245I.

The president hailed it as a way to reunite family, separated by the border. "If you believe in family values, if you understand the worth of family and the importance of family, let's get 245I out of the United States Congress and give me a chance to sign it," Bush told the chamber members.

Tancredo, the head of a congressional caucus on immigration issues and proponent of halting virtually all immigration, said he had blocked a previous attempt by Bush to push an extension of the amnesty program through the House. But this time, he said House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., had agreed to place the issue on the suspension, or consent, calendar, making it difficult to defeat the proposal.

The Senate might be more favorable to the bill than the House, expanding the numbers of individuals who can apply, Tancredo said.

See post #1689. I'm guessing that the newly dismantled pentagon dis-information office has been spreading lies over the internet from their newly non-funded workstations.

Very sad. They must be desperate in their attempt to fool the sheeple. They know full well the public doesn't want this. Who would? More drugs and crime, more taxes, more whining for long lost Atzlan. We have nothing but quislings in Congress right now.

A quote out of theWashington Times today:

House Majority Leader Dick Armey, Texas Republican, said House approval "will send a message to the world that our country will continue to be a beacon to all who love freedom and the opportunity to live, work and raise a family."

What district is he out of? He's retiring so he obviously doesn't care what his constituents think. Come to think of it, none of them do. They deserve no less than a boot back to the farm in November.

March 12,2002 House set to 'cloak' amnesty By August Gribbin THE WASHINGTON TIMES House Republican leaders will attempt to slip through an unrecorded vote this evening to give amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants, allowing them to remain legally in the United States.

The amnesty measure will come before the representatives by way of a special arrangement between the White House and the House leadership. It will appear among a batch of uncontroversial bills that typically win pro forma approval without amendment or debate.

House Majority Leader Dick Armey, Texas Republican, said House approval "will send a message to the world that our country will continue to be a beacon to all who love freedom and the opportunity to live, work and raise a family."

The legislation is listed on this evening's so-called "suspension" or "consent" calendar, which lists bills that are expected to win automatic approval. The voting is "cloaked," meaning there is no record and no explanation of the way individual representatives vote, and each member is said to cast a "shadow vote."

Lots of replies, so little time.

First of all, sincere thanks to the superWizards at FR for giving us back our beloved site. What would we do without it? Well, we found out today, didn't we? LOL!

First, I, too, live in No. VA. I have previously posted my story of refusing to have a contractor put a new roof on my house with illegals. (Yes, he allowed me to break the contract, because I speak Spanish, and 4 of the workers had been unable to produce ANY kind of paper that was written in English!)

Second, in a nearby Fairfax City McDonald's, I've helped, I don't know how many, hapless customers get what they wanted by ordering for them, in Spanish, because the people behind the counter spoke so little ENGLISH! If you think I'm outraged by this, you don't know the half of it.

In this area of No. VA, first it was the invasion of Koreans - we are near bases that are used to process "political evacuees".

Next, came the VietNam invasion, with 3/4ths of Arlington and Annandale becoming "Da Nang West" - no joke.

Unfortunately, I now live in an area where Government, with their emigre processing centers, have changed the demography of the area, forcing it to become more and more Democrat in nature. CongressCritters are now so pro-immigration it has gotten ridiculous. Between H-1B, the 1996 amnesty, and Klintoon gutting the Military and DOD budget, is it any wonder that I, a defense contractor with specialities in Intel, have been unemployed since 1993? The answer is "No".

Third, yesterday, on an immigration website, I saw an estimate of the REAL NUMBERS that this 246(i) would grant. Are you sitting down?

Based on the numbers who responded to the 1996 passing of the amnesty provision, it is conservatively estimated that the passing of this bill would result in 65 Million illegals being granted US citizenship.

What flabbergasts me is that President Bush doesn't realize that these people consistently vote Democrat, and that they put an overwhelming burden on our social services- health, schools- while forcing Americans out of work. What part of one term, just like his Father, doesn't he get?

This is TYRANNY IN ACTION. Watch all the republican reps that voted for this piece of treason to lie to their constituency about how they voted.

WRine, have you heard anything that this was going to be a recorded vote and not cloaked as they planned? If that's true, at least we'll be able to see who the sellouts are.

This guy "as a Libertarian" should understand that in order for an open border scheme to work there must be an end to all State subsidies.

Once the main incentive for immigration has been removed we (natives) will have to compete openly with immigrants for jobs.

As it stands now these people can accept lower wages and no bennys because our taxes are subsidizing their existence. Without that the market would be dominated by the skilled competitor.

I called Tom Tancredo's office and ask if he was going to demand a recorded vote and they said yes he is. So, now we will know which members will be responsible for rewarding law breakers post 9-11.

The very same White House officials who have, rightly, put national security at the top of their agenda, are in the same breath stealthily pushing a measure that will jeopardize the safety of all Americans in an effort to attract Hispanic votes in the 2004 election.

I think the overarching aim here is to break down the borders of this country so that in time it does not resemble anything it once was.

He doesn't care if he is one term, he said from the get go that he may be a one term president, may not run again in 2004. He has swooped in to do his damage to the Republican party, the natural born citizens of America, and whoosh out.

Makes you question just why these people, politicans, are so keen on globalization that they are willing to fall on the sword for it, as far as their careers and reputations go.

Thanks for that. The least we should get out of this is to know who is for this and against it.

The Bush family business is quite a bit more lucrative than a crummy gubment job could ever be. Remember this, nearly all politicians are Lawyers and businessmen. They are pushing us onto their sword.
