Study Shows Left-Handers Have More Flexible Brains

Rense.comPeople who grow up left-handed have a different, more flexible brain structure than those born to take life by the right hand, say researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, who used twins to study heredity.

The reason is that right-handers have genes that force their brains into a slightly more one- sided structure, according to research published yesterday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Left-handers appear to be missing those genes.

"There really is a difference in brains that results in a more symmetric brain in left-handers, where the two sides are more equal," said UCLA neurogeneticist Daniel Geschwind, who led the research team. "There is more flexibility, and that is under genetic control."

In the effort to understand how the brain shapes the mind, researchers have been striving to document the way genes and environment affect intelligence and mental abilities. The human insistence on preferring one hand over the other poses a particularly nagging question that touches on both anatomy and behavior.

"There is clearly something fundamental here we need to comprehend if we are to understand what makes us uniquely human," Geschwind said.

Of all the primates, only human beings display such a strong predisposition to right-handedness. Right-handers make up about 90 percent of the population. The left and right halves of the brain are different in both their anatomy and their functions, related in part to hand preference.

But until now, no one could document the connection.

The UCLA study is the strongest evidence yet that heredity shapes the brains of left-handed and right-handed people differently, Dartmouth neuroscientist Michael Gazzaniga said.

The UCLA researchers conducted brain scans on 72 pairs of male identical twins between 75 and 85 years old.

Identical twins, who share the same genes, offer a unique lens through which to study the relative effects of heredity on human nature.

Right- and left-handedness is partially determined by genetics. If a person inherits the gene for right-handedness, that person will be right-handed. People who do not have that gene, however, can be either left- or right-handed. There is no specific gene for left-handedness.

Right-handers typically have a larger left brain hemisphere, where their language abilities are concentrated.

Conversely, left-handers have more balanced brains, with both sides relatively symmetrical. The language abilities of left-handers more often are concentrated on the right side.

If identical twins carry the gene for hand preference, both must be right-handed. If they lack the gene, one twin can develop right-handed while the other develops left- handed.

The researchers found that the brains of identical right-handed twins were very similar in size and structure. But when a left-hander was part of the twin set, the brains were different. The conclusion, researchers said, is that the absence of the gene for hand preference allows the brain to develop differently as the individual grows up.

A similar pattern did not appear in 67 sets of fraternal twins used as a control group.

My maternal grandmother was born in 1900 and developed into a lefty. Years later, when she was given an x-ray, it revealed she was born with a broken right collarbone. She said she did things lefthanded because it hurt less. Duh.

Large birds also show a preference in "footedness". My parrot always holds her food in her left foot while eating, never the right foot. It's comical. She looks like somebody at a party clutching their drink. She'll even wave the left foot around sometimes while holding food in it.

I'm told their are university studies being done (your tax dollars at work) to determine if there is anything humans can learn from parrots in regard to this righty-lefty stuff.

I'm going to have to do a search to find the article, but I read on FR several days ago about the correlation between sonograms during pregnancy and boys winding up left-handed when their Mother's had sonograms during a certain stage of pregnancy - indicating a statistical probability of brain-damage to male babies, resulting in left-handedness.

I now wish I knew how to do that teeny-tiny print thing that some posters use, when they say, "Now donning flame-proof suit" as they rapidly exit!

As a matter of fact......

Sinister comes from the Latin:sinistra which means left side or left handed. Dexterous: from Latin means right side or right handedness. Ambidextrous means being capable of using either had with "dexterity" or right handedness. Thank You Mrs Gromley, (my Latin teacher).

As a matter of fact, the ratio of right handedness to left handedness is about 85% to 15%. I read an article where, during the Middle Ages, many people who were left handed were persecuted as witches because left handedness was far from the norm. This is where the term sinister took on it's current meaning of an evil, bad, nogoodnik or action.

Class is out for today.

Leonardo Di Vinci and I tend to disagree with an overall retardation proposition ,however ,as for ultrasound recent research is indicative that it could well be dangerous fullstop, theres a good article in Nexus magazine this month about it

The reason the crossing your arms thing doesn't work for you is you're to darn ambidextrous; that's your problem.

Cross your arms again. You say you're lefthanded and your right hand comes out on top? Make yourself cross your arms the other way - most people have to concentrate to do this; how hard is it for you or are you so ambidextrous you didn't feel a thing?

Crossing the arms and having the dominant hand come out on top seems to work in about 2/3 of the people when I try it in a group It's not unusual to find one or two of the contrarians were changed from left to right in childhood, but I haven't figured out the rest of the contrarian group.

Do you twist your paper so the header is to the left, when you write? Yes, almost sideways. Am providing some anecdotal support, here.

I, too, was forced to switch from left to right. If I'm very tired, my writing gets somewhat dyslexic, but don't think I have too many other problems. Was given "genius tests" repeadedly in grade school (we moved around a lot). Have three very intelligent children, one of them, my son, is a lefty.

Daughter-in-law is a lefty, too. They have two children, one a lefty, the other too young to know yet, but he reaches and grabs for things mostly with his right.

My area-of-expertise is computers and my son is a very talented artist currently working on a computer science degree. On the other hand, one of my daughters (righty) is currently working on her Master's Degree in Information Systems Engineering.

Interesting stuff!

Don't forget that lefties tend to die far more frequently in home accidents and have statistically shorter life-spans in general.

What about the "left handed" person who is forced to use their right hand?

My grandmother was forced to be right-handed by the nuns. There was payback: I'm left-handed; so are my two sisters and brother. My other two brothers are right-handed. Of my aunt's four kids, two are left-handed. I'm not sure about my uncle's 3 kids, but I bet at least one of them is left-handed. So out of just the 10 grandchildren between my mother and her sister's kids, 6 are left-handed. (My two daughters, to my surprise, are righties).

I wonder if left-handedness can also be a result of brain damage? The mentally retarded also have a higher instance of left-handedness.

That is news to moi! I do know that my brother's mentor and architecture professor at the Univ of Cincinnati told his entire class that if 'you are not left handed you probably will never achieve greatness in this field' because all of the greatest architects have been left handed-from Leonardo De Vinci or Michealangelo to Frank Loyld Wright and I.M. Pei. Also, this same is true of artists.

I have also read that left handers are more prone to being clumsey and die earlier than the average stats. Bummer. Since I am left handed!

Well, all I know about that is, I've stubbed (and broken) two toes in the past year. ;-D OUCH! ;-D On the other hand, except for running off the road in a snowstorm (no damage, no injury) I haven't had any auto accidents...;-D

LOL - I always tell people, There's a reason my mom didn't name me Grace. I haven't broken any bones *knocks on wood*, but I am a certified klutz. Hehe, and I don't give out directions either... the whole left-right thing gets me every time. If you tell me North, South, East, or West, I can do it. Of course, I have a compass in my car to help me too! *LMAO* Funny thing, most guys I have dated are also left handed. Guess birds of a feather really do flock together.
