What irks me when all is said and done is that Britain still thinks it has "the Empire". This comes thru initially with some Brits who settle here - and some English tourists.

Very few English people under 50 even think about the 'Empire' any more in my experience.

,,, in my experience, the bulk of people from the UK I've met (even as recently as this weekend just gone, in Napier) are over 50. They've worked out that NZ is a good holiday with our low dollar, relative safety as a longhaul destination and familiarity with English customs.

Just as a side bit of info, before Sept 11, the number of Kiwis going to the UK was down by 18% on the previous year.

Edward wished to serve his nation during the Second World War but the closest he got was as governor and commander-in-chief of the Bahamas from 1940 to 1945. After the war rumors became rife that he had Nazi sympathies, though in fact he had visited Germany in 1937 in an effort to help stop the inevitable. There is no point in stirring up a hornet's nest of controversy right now. Charles has been gradually getting people used to the idea of him marrying her, we are not used to it yet, but it is slowly changing. Acting precipitously would only endanger his chances of ever becoming King.
