Edward VIII? I think so. He was the last real man to come out of the house of Windsor. Hardly. He gave in to pressure to abdicate. Afterwards he was just a clothes-horse, party-goer, and free-loader.
His cousin, Louis Mountbatten, was entirely different
Mountbatten, Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma Mountbatten, Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, 1900-1979, British admiral; great-grandson of Queen Victoria and uncle of Philip Mountbatten, duke of Edinburgh. He entered the navy as a cadet in 1913 and saw service as a midshipman in World War I. At the outbreak of World War II he was a commander in the dangerous destroyer service until he returned to England to become adviser to and later director (1942-43) of combined operations; he directed the commando raids upon Norway and France. In 1943 he was appointed to head the Southeast Asia Command and commanded Allied operations against the Japanese in Myanmar.
As the last British viceroy of India (1947) he concluded the negotiations for independence and the creation of the two separate states of India and Pakistan. He then served briefly (1947-48) as governor-general of the dominion of India. He was created an earl in 1947.
As chief of the defence staff (1959-65), he worked to integrate the various branches of the armed forces. He became governor (1965) of the Isle of Wight and then lord lieutenant (1974). In 1979 he was assassinated by terrorists affiliated with the Irish Republican Army.

Might as well since they're about as degenerate as the common Jane and Joe Doe on the street.Only as degenerate?
Good grief, what is the world coming to? Proper royals were always much more degenerate than the average person, all those illegitimate children and shagging around.
Let's have some real monarchy for a change, not all this prissy stuff!

I think he can become King without Camilla becoming Queen even if they are married. She can get some sort of (consolation) title. Ala "Prince" Philip. I think they could probably do the same for Camilla.

What irks me when all is said and done is that Britain still thinks it has "the Empire". This comes thru initially with some Brits who settle here - and some English tourists.Very few English people under 50 even think about the 'Empire' any more in my experience.
To: MadIvan
He was also a Nazi sympathiser. Care to try that again? I was hoping someone would bring that up. Didn't they keep the "boxes" away from him because they didn't think he could be trusted with the information?

,,, in my experience, the bulk of people from the UK I've met (even as recently as this weekend just gone, in Napier) are over 50. They've worked out that NZ is a good holiday with our low dollar, relative safety as a longhaul destination and familiarity with English customs.
Just as a side bit of info, before Sept 11, the number of Kiwis going to the UK was down by 18% on the previous year.

"African or European?" You've got to know these things to be king!

He was also a Nazi sympathiser.
Edward wished to serve his nation during the Second World War but the closest he got was as governor and commander-in-chief of the Bahamas from 1940 to 1945. After the war rumors became rife that he had Nazi sympathies, though in fact he had visited Germany in 1937 in an effort to help stop the inevitable. Edward had such a high opinion of himself that he was blinded to his use by the Nazi propaganda machine.

Of course that little tidbit changes my view of 'ol Eddie VIII... so then, who is a fine upstanding example of Royalty?
King George VI. Faithful to his wife, faithful to his country, a shy, retiring modest man who didn't want the job which was precisely why he excelled at it.

There is no point in stirring up a hornet's nest of controversy right now. Charles has been gradually getting people used to the idea of him marrying her, we are not used to it yet, but it is slowly changing. Acting precipitously would only endanger his chances of ever becoming King.
