UPDATE: Dragon's Fury - Breath of Fire: now available at Amazon, Barnes & Nobles & elsewhere
Dragon's Fury - Breath of Fire ^ | February 20, 2002 | Jeff Head

Posted on 02/20/2002 8:34:18 AM PST by Jeff Head

The novel, Dragon's Fury - Breath of Fire, volume one of a five part series about a future Third World War between the West (the United States and our allies) and an unholy union of Red China, her allies and the fundamental Islamic Nations, continues to progress.

This thread is an update/status to those who have purchased the book and those who may have interest in the series.

To date approximately 300 novels have beend sold. Well over half of those are illustrated trade paperbacks and the rest a mixture of MSReader, AdobeReader and Activ Ebooks ... all of which are for sale at the web site, or at various stores.

Recently, all of the Hastings Books stores in the Boise area agreed to stock the book and run an "Author's Signing" day at each store through March. These include:

Hasting's Books at Overland and Five Mile, Boise, ID
Hasting's Books at Fairview and Cole, Boise, ID
Hasting's Books at Idaho and Apple, Boise, ID

I hope to extend that to all Hasting's throughout Idaho and ultimately into Utah before making a general proposal to Hastings for a larger, regional and then national stocking. Several companies that frequent gun shows have also started purchasing the book to sell and a number of other local stores are carrying the book.

The Book can also be ordered:

ONLINE AT THE WEB SITE

... or through

AMAZON BOOKS (Trade paperback, need some reviews in there)

AMAZON BOOKS (Adobe Reader, need some reviews in there)

or at:

BARNES AND NOBLES (Trade paperback, need some reviews there too)

or at B. Dalton Book stores (owned by Barnes and Nobles) (though they are not stocking it). Please use the following ISBN number:

ISBN 0-9715779-1-9

My agent with Waterside Productions continues to be very positive and has manuscripts in the hands of several large publishers.

I have started writing the second volume, "Trodden Under" and hope to produce and publish it in the May time frame.

For those interested in seeing excerpts, reading about the author (me) and reading many reviews of those who have already read the book, please click on the following picture/link.

For those who have already read the book, your comments and reviews would be very welcome. Please, either post them to this thread, or email me at the following:

Also consider entering those reviews at the Amazon and Barnes and Nobles web sites.

Again, thanks for the support and to Jim and FR for the opportunity to keep people up to date.

See my number 13 post. I agreed with Grampa Dave about that idea ... more folks should do that.

Regarding Clany and his books ... who can say? He's apparently got a whole team, a whole company set up now and can afford to edit and critique things and send them out under his name if he wants.

I don't believe his latest stuff is nearly as good as the earlier "Hunt for Red October", "Red Storm Rising" and "Patriot Games" for example.

Jeff, do you have an info dump on the ins and outs of self pubilishing actual (real paper) books? Did you use XLibris? How does it work hooking them into Amazon and B&N?

BTW, if you get a chance, please check out the book's web site and let me know how you think it is looking form a "Web" perspective. Any comments or suggestions would be very appreciated.

Regards and hope all is going well with the effort on your book.

Clancy has sure slipped, it happens to a lot of them (Grisham, Ludlum, Steven King etc).

I guess the lure of the paid-in-advance contract for future work is hard to resist, even if there is no particular inspiration. So they just sit down and type anything, and get paid.

Your website is terrific, very easy to navigate, it's all there!

I went to the U.S. ISBN site and purchased my own ISBN numbers using a "DBA" (Alpha Connections) as the publisher. I assigned numbers to the Ebook versions and the Printed version of the book.

I then did some reseach and got with Lightning Source (www.lightningsource.com) and set up with them to do Print on Demand. That's how the printed books are going out now, to Amazon, to Barnes and Nobles and to my own efforts from my web site and at local book stores, etc.

I did all of the art and press/camera ready work myself using Paint Shop Pro, Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat to make the electronic files they are being using for the book ... including all of the formatting for print for the two-sided facing page margins, etc. All of that is going to lightning source as PDF files created through Acrobat (Note, not Acrobat Reader, but the full version from Aldus)

I also did the same for the Adobe Ebook Reader and MSReader formats, purchasing all of this software to make that possible. I then provided the necessary files to LightningSource for the Adobe Ebook version. (Lightning Source also does the Adobe Ebook Reader) Amazon has picked up on that and the Printed Book from Lightning Source.

Well over half my sales are now printed books, and I am hoping with the new Amazon links that those sales will pick up dramtically, but I will have to get the word out regarding the same.

Barnes and Nobles also picked up on it from that distribution point (Lightning Source) I believe.

Hope all that helps.

Thank you very much for those sentiments ... and for the BUMP.

We hope a large publisher takes it on soon and puts it in every major book store across the country ... either way, we are going to keep pushing and promoting it ourselves too.

I make no qualms about indicating that there is a message in this book and the whole series that is couched in what I hope is an exciting and enjoyable plot and characterization, but the underlying message and warning is one I hope gets out all across the country.

Dragon's Fury - Breath of Fire
A Story of the coming Third World War

FRegards!

Thanks Jeff, that's a big help. I am about 60% through my novel, which is going to run about 120,000 words I think. The action all takes place over three weeks and I have finished the rough draft of the first two weeks.

Sounds GREAT! Based on the little snid-bit you did a few months ago, I can't wait to read it.

I'm well into Chapter One of Book two here, having finished the Prologue. I've been distracted by the WTC Petition and looking for more engineering work ... but have got a routine down now where I can get to it. <p You've got FRemail

I am finding the writing going faster now that I am "over the hump". Introducing new characters is the hardest, and now past the mid point the plot threads are all in play and resolving them is much faster than beginning them in the first place. I hope to be finished the rough in under 2 months, and then I will take a long time to smooth it, another 2 months maybe. So I should be ready to publish by summer.

Sounds like a GREAT plan bro. Best of luck with it. Let me know anyway I can help.

I hope to have book number two out by the end of May myself. Lots of folks asking me for it already.

Shrew, Per the following recommendation and the above thread, I am forwarding my name to you. As I mentioned to BobJ, I am weak in Html, but I'm interested in books. Here's Bob's referral:

Re: Free Republic Book of the Month, February: Your Choices and Summaries, both Fiction/Non-Fiction NEW Bob J 2002-02-22 10:38:59 "The Shrew" has taken on this project and I'm sure he could use some help. Basically, we will have a section of the website that lists recommended reading with reviews from FReepers and a link to Amazon or someplace else where they can buy the book. I noticed your post and thought it would seque nicely. If you're intersted in conservative books and reading, I think you would be a fine team member on this project! Contact The Shrew via FReepmail and tell him about your post and that I directed you to him!

Jeff, I appreciate the info- as one who had a tiny bit of sucess getting a few magazine articles published in the eighties, I know what a labor/love/chore writing can be.

I'm going to drag out sabretooth's big ping list--

Great idea bump:

Whenever, I order and receive a book from Amazon.com, I send a copy of the receipt to two book stores who refuse to carry conservative books!
