In America gay has meant homosexual pretty much forever who knows where it came from

"Pretty much forever" is patently incorrect. Even up to the 30s and 40s, kid's books used the term to denote carefree happiness.

So it has not "meant homosexual" except for the past few decades, at most.

And it's still used to mean happy and whatever, just not very often. Look words have double meanings. Get used to it. If I refer to a vegetable I'm probably refering to a plant that is judged edible but most Americans don't eat enough of, or I could be refering to a crippled person. You've got to go by context, if I say "no vegetables on my pizza" I'm probably not referring to gimps. There's just no way around that kind of stuff. And some words get taken over by a subsection of society, you gotta be careful who you're around before announcing that you're going to buy a joint, lid or key. Handle it.
