The Queen also sang our National Anthem at a memorial service for the 9/11 victims. And that is unprecedented ...... she doesn't even sing the British national anthem because it is "God Save the Queen" and it's considered unseemly for her to do so.

The air of respectability that the family had as late as 11-12 years ago no longer exists, and the death of the Queen Mum would deal another massive blow.

Everyone on these threads is missing the obvious. The British royalty, and in particular the Queen Mother, serves many important purposes in British, and to some extent American, society. First and foremost the royal family acts as a unifiying force for national soveriegnty. Every British subject automatically has commonality with other Britians, simply by virtue of the monarchy. The monarchy also brings historical continuity to a culture that changes nearly as fast as ours. But no matter how fast things change; traditions, culture, and history is constantly brought into normal everyday British life.

Eliminate the monarchy? The British will simply meld into the Euro-Blob that is forming on the rest of the continent. The monarchy assures British individuality from the masses across the channel. If you remove what makes them different, you make them the same.

Many on this forum constantly cry about “one world government” and how we are going to lose our sovereignty. Yet, at the same time, they cry about the monarchy which is helping to bond the British culture together and gives a tangible symbol of the very concept of sovereignty that is so loudly acclaimed on FR.

Naturally, unity can’t occur when the monarchy itself acts in deplorable ways which causes division among its subjects. I think that the actions of the young royals have been destructive to the purposes that I have outlined. But this is exactly where the Queen Mother should be applauded. She has led an exemplary life and has done more to unify Britain than anyone else.

I hope that she lives longer, I hope that the rest of the royal family learns and accepts what is at stake with their duties then acts accordingly.

I also hope that Freepers will act graciously, and give respect for a woman who has led a good upstanding useful life.

I see your point and shouldn't have spouted off so quickly... I've never understood some folks fascination with royalty. Perhaps I'm a bit cynical after witnessing the amount of press Princess Dianna received vs. Mother Teresa.

Di received all the attention precicely because she disgraced the royal family. She was the PC Princess with all of Hollywood backing her. She had met all the requirements by leaving her husband and the father of her children and then running away with the Arabic playboy in order to add double.

Only in this sense do I feel genuine sympathy towards the royal family. And of course for the Queen for her ill health.

Will SOMEONE take this poor women to a doctor. Ealier on the linked thread they stated that she had fallen out of a chair. She has had a stroke I tell you. After they have had a stroke they lose their ability to swallow, that is why she is not eating. Socialized medicine at its best! Even the royality can't get good care!

My dad was stationed in Germany when I was 15. I had chance to see the Queen In her car and it drove right next to us.
My dad was in his American Army Officers uniform which is why she looked our way I'm sure. She nodded to us. I was blown away.

What a nice story. Thanks for telling us about it. I'm not a fanatical fan of royalty. But that would have been something I would remember also. Diana drove me to distraction, as did Fergie. But it seems to me it doesn't cost anything to be kind to others in their times of sorrow.

From June 1940 to December 1941 Britain was the only country left standing up to Hitler. It was the Queen Mum who rallied her country while it was being pummelled by rocket fire and German aircraft.

Point is, if Britain had fell the Nazi empire would probably still be around. The Queen Mum was a significant figure in preventing that from happening.

I was around during WW II, John. I remember a lot of things, one of which is how the Queen Mother was such in inspiration to not only her own country, but to the world. It's so sad that our public schools don't teach history any more. Otherwise, you would have known that. Perhaps you will be inspired to do a little research and learn more about the Queen Mother and others like her, such as our WW II Military.

I disagree to a certain extent. The Queen has done her duties well, regardless of what the younger generation did. I predict that the death of the Queen Mum will heighten sympathy for Elizibeth.
