I could tell you all kinds of stories about incompetent firearms handling. Of course, I could also tell you about exceptional weapons handling as well. However, I think the stories of incompetence would outnumber the other.

I'm afraid that would probably be true.

But it would appear that you, yourself, are in the "exceptional" category :) I know that you're not alone, but I wish there were more. My compliments.

I have a good idea just from this info and my bet is on a Glock...

Here's the proof it was not a Glock...

Child wounded by officer's gunshot in show-and-tell

INQUIRER STAFF WRITERS

A 10-year-old boy was grazed in the head by a bullet during a show-and-tell presentation by an off-duty police officer at a Germantown charter school today.

The boy, identified as James Reeves, was in good condition this afternoon, after being rushed to Temple University Hospital from the Imani Education Circle School in the 5600 block of Greene Street in Germantown.

Authorities said he received a graze wound to his right cheek about 2:45 p.m.

Philadelphia Police Lt. Sue Slawson said the incident remained under investigation. The officer, Vanessa Carter-Morange, was off-duty and participating in a show-and-tell presentation at the school where her son is enrolled.

Police said the gun apparently discharged when the officer dropped it in the classroom.

Carter-Morange, 39, has been with the police department since 1996 and is currently assigned to the Ninth District. Slawson said the officer will be removed from the street while a routine internal affairs investigation is conducted. END

Glocks do not go off when dropped.

What you said is true of every good firearm.

The only "problem" with Glocks, really, is their light trigger pull, which I personally like. But it is true that it's a lot easier to accidentally fire a gun with a 4 pound or less trigger than one with a 10 pound trigger. The real trick is to simply keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you're pointing at what you intend to shoot.

I personally prefer SiG Sauer, but the Glock is an excellent weapon. Neither of them has an external safety, and I much prefer it that way. The Glock just isn't for people who don't observe basic firearms safety.

Of course, I take the time to properly train with all of my weapons, and also observe all safety rules.

Some of my ameturish "gun nut" friends observed a few months ago the competition of the professionals [cops]. From their report, I'd trust myself around your typical armed citizen over your typical armed cop any day.

Aside to other readers: Studies show you are far more likely to be "accidently" shot by the cops than by your fellow armed citizens.

I accidently said HRT stood for Hostage Response Team when it really stands for Hostage Rescue Team.

Depends on whether you're talking about the original meaning of the acronym or what they actually do.

By "M4 machine gun", are you referring to the current military issue rifle?

Yes.....In San Diego, last I heard agents were not allowed to carry their M4's. Management didn't think their agents were competent enough to use them in built up areas. It's the same way with our sister station in Calexico. The fact that I work in open country is the only reason I can carry it.

Pleased to meet you. You guys have a tough row to hoe down there. Gets a bit hot & dry, too

Likwise...There's a lot of PC, but it adds to the excitement of the job. The more they tie our hands the more aggressive the aliens and smugglers become.

Thanks for the post, Archy. A friend has a Reising. The operator has to be careful where they put they're forward support hand because just underneath is where the toggle is for the bolt. If you grab the stock at the opening and fire full auto, the toggle rips up the palm of your hand.

The first friggin' thing you learn is to never point a gun at anyone, loaded or not, in a non-defense situation.

He also forgot Rule #2: keep your finger OFF the trigger until you're ready to shoot!!

I guess only the police and military should have guns. They have the proper training, after all... Sarah Brady says so.

It's just a matter of time before she goes after the police and the military, too.

Yes, I bet the gun was black plastic too. Or is that racist?

Yes, that was an uncalled for slur against my Glock, who used to rest peacefully next to my bed until that Italian gun, Beretta, joined him. Now they roam the streets after I fall asleep, looking for trouble.

And for those Glock disparagers out there: Don't rely on a safety to protect you from unsafe gun handling practices.

There is nothing wrong with Glocks. You do have to have a higher IQ than a rock to use them properly though.

I don't understand why you and others say the Glock requires a higher IQ to operate than other weapons with more external controls, like safeties and decockers.

In my book, fewer operating parts and controls means simpler. I like the Sigs and Beretas too, but I wanted a high tech revolver with more than 6 shots. That's a Glock. You load it, you rack the slide, and then you know that all you have to do is pull the trigger and it goes boom.

If you wake up one morning and there's a litter of KelTec P32s in there, can I have one?

Your reporting is alarmist and incomplete. The child's cheek was grazed. The officer dropped her firearm. I'm not excusing the incident, just settng the record straight.

yes, yes, the cheed IS part of the head, but 'shot in the head' tends to render a quite different mental image than grazed on the cheek, eh?
