UPDATE/STATUS/PLANS - WTC Flag Raising Petition - 127,500+ Signatures
PetitionOnline WTC Flag Raising Petition ^ | January 31, 2002 | Jeff Head

Posted on 01/31/2002 6:50:30 AM PST by Jeff Head

This is an update report to those who have signed, or who are contemplating signing, the:

"Depict the Flag Raising at Ground Zero of the WTC Attack as it actually Occurred!" Petition

It is also to those who have otherwise supported that effort in any way. The purpose is to give a status and let you know plans for the petition.

First, let me thank those who have signed or supported this effort to insure that an accurate memorial is erected to the victims and heroes of 9-11, instead of anything based on a political agenda. The activism of thousands i showing just what people can accomplish if they take a mind to.

There are now over 127,500 signatures in sixteen days!

This issue has struck a nerve in tens of thousands of people all across this nation. That number is growing to hundreds of thoiusands, and I am sure if people were aware of it, it would grow to millions. Revisionism and political correctness are not going to be tolerated with respect to 9-11. They should never be tolerated and perhaps this issue and this effort will start the ball rolling that way.

Specifically, the effort is paying off and together with the firefighters themselves and the many thousands of others who have protested, it has resulted in New York City scrapping plans for an altered flag raising statue. Ultimate plans have not yet been announced, and so there is still a chance that they will propose some other politically driven memorial which alters the history of what happened that day. Therefore according to the 2nd point in the petition, which indicates that only a historically accurate memorial should be erected, the petition is continuing. It will do so until final plans are announced for a historically accurate memorial not based on any political agenda.

In that regard, I am also writing to let you know the current plans for the petition and its signatures.

It is my intent intent to have the first 100,000 signatures delivered directly to the City of New York and the New York City Fire Department as soon as possible. I intend to give two copies of professionally bound signatures (which will amount to ten volumes of five hundred pages of signatures each) to firefighters there in New York City who can in turn present them to the Fire Department and to the Mayor and/or his representatives. I would hope to attract media attention to that event, but intend to do it with or without the media. I would then repeat this process at the 250,000, the 500,000 and the one million signature marks if the petition goes that far, which I hope it does.

I believe that stacks of bound signatures from all over the country piled on politicians' and planners' desks will help insure that we hold those same politicians' and planners' feet to the fire. It will help insure than no more political nonsense and revisionism is applied to any ememorial dedicated to any event of that tragic day, 9-11. Tragedy that turned to heroism that generated patriotism and unity across this entire nation.

The effort required to make this happen will not be incosequential. Electronically extracting the 100,000 names, formatting them, professionally printing them, copying them, professionally binding them and then delivering them to New York City will take considerable effort and expense. Anyone who is interested in the details of that effort and who agrees with the importance of it, and would like to help, please contact me at the following email address and I will send you the details regarding how you can help.

jeffhead@bigplanet.com

Any excess funds that result from this effort will be donated proportionally to the IAFF New York Fire Fighters 911 Disaster Relief Fund, the Port Authority Police WTC Disaster Survivors Fund, and to NYPD and EMS worker funds established directly by those associations for the support of families of personnel killed or injured on 9-11.

Thank you for your time, and again, either way, thank you for your support in this effort to insure that we depict accurately what occurred on 9-11. It must remain accurate so that we can always remember and never forget those who died or were injured ... and so that we can therefore maintain our national sovereignty and liberty against those who would destroy them.

Boy this thing must really be tweeking the liberals noses today ... or some of them have taken note of it.

In the past hour or so I have received a good ten emails form people saying pretty much the same thing attacking the petition and CC'ing their comments on to others of their ilk. Here's an example:

Are you totally racist? The picture of the raising of the American flag is a beautiful demonstration of how people worked together to put the nation first during a national tragedy. The three firefighters in the photo were not thinking of themselves at the time are would not expect the tragedy to become about them. Many people died during the tragedy, blacks, whites, hispanics, and eople from other cultures and nations. By changing the sculpture it is in not changing history but rather more accurately portraying it to demonstrate how it had such a broad impact on all of us and how we all were able to pull together.

I beg you to reconsider your proposal.
These poor people actually believe this stuff. By changing the way it actually happend somehow not changing it but more accurately portraying it! My goodness ... true useful idiots.

Here is how I responded to this lady and to the several others that wrote the same type of emails to me in a flurry the last hour or so:

You know, until the attempt was made to depict this historical event in some other way than it happened was made, I had never considered the race, gender or ethnicity of the people who raised the flag ... just that they had done it. It wouldn't have mattered if they had been black, red, yellow, brown or white ... man or woman. They were Americans and the flag they raised represented all of us and sent the message of our unity and determination in the face of a ruthless enemy.

Then these politicians and planners came along and decided to make an issue of race by proposing to change the ethnicity of the people who had actually done the deed ... as if though somehow that would make the statement. ... and I am sorry, when basing a memorial; on an historic event that people will see for generations to come ... it is an attempt to change history if you do not depict it as it actually occurred.

So, I have news for those who would try. The FLAG already made the statement. What they were proposing was an affront and a distortion of history and it was an insult to the very minorities that they wanted to depict ... as if only by depicting them could they be considered as part of the heroic actions that day. Very small minded in my opinion, and driven by a purely political agenda.

We are a diverse people, but in America we are also supposed to be a united people. As I said, that flag, that those three firemen raised, represents everyone of us. The planners needed look no further than the flag itself to see all races, sexes and cultures represented that come together to make us all Americans.

There is talk now of the these political and administrative planners bowing to the pressure and not creating such a depiction of the statue. If this turns out to be so, then BRAVO that we have perhaps helped influence them towards what we consider a more correct decision. It is a shame that such pressure had to be brought to bear, but sadly, a reality of today's world and one that should not be forgotten at election time.

They are now talking about looking at "different options" altogether, and that is fine. I have no problem with any memorial that praises and honors all who served and helped and were victims as long as it is accurate and as long as it is not politically motivated.

I have a problem with a blatant attempt to alter an historical event for political agendas for whatever reason, political, artistic or ideological ... and always will. Stalin and Hitler and Mao did that type of thing to "influence" people's perception.

Until a final decision is reached and it is clear that they do not intend to attempt to revise history, We will keep up the pressure and continue the petition at:

http://www.petitiononline.com/flgraise/

We hope to have the first 100,000 signatures delivered directly to the New York City Mayors Office and to the Fire Department ASAP. I feel that ten bound books of five hundred pages of signatures from all over the nation sitting on their desks will help hold their feet to the fire. We will follow that up with each group of 100,000 as they come in until the issue is resolved one way or another.

You may disagree with some of this. That is fine. Our ability to do that and to voice it and garner support one way or another is another of the things that keeps us strong in this nation. I do not begrudge you it at all ... just oppose it vigorously for the distortion it is.

Sincerely,

Jeff Head

Comment #105242 - Why can't we all just be "Americans" and concentrate on the flag in the photo?!

Very nice response, Jeff. It is honest and compassionate. Let us hope that the 'plank' in their eyes keeping them from seeing the truth is removed.

The person wrote---

"The picture of the raising of the American flag is a beautiful demonstration of how people worked together to put the nation first during a national tragedy."

She got it right. The picture IS..., alterations to the picture ARE NOT.

I believe most folks were concentrating on the flag ... until these revisionists came along and made an issue out of changing the event.

I believe there are a bunch of the hard core liberals/socialists/marxists and their tag alongs who are insecure about the unity they see breaking out all over and the patriotism (and well they should be with such ideological views).

So they will take what ever opportunity they can to dig at it ... to tear it down ... to knock us off a path that will lead to the type of liberty, virtue, morality and individual responsibility (meaning less need for government programs that pay many of their way) that this nation was founded upon.

Anyhow ... that comment is spot on ... we need to focus on the flag and what it represents.

To me, that flag-raising had nothing to do with anything but the colors red, white, and blue. It said that we have been wounded but we are far from defeated. It said the spirit of America is strong.

It is an entirely different subject than honoring the rescue workers who sacrificed their lives. That's a worthy cause, too ..... but a completely different one!

This picture personifies, in our lifetime, what the Star Spangled Banner is all about .... "Oh, say can you see?" ..... and the answer is a resounding YES, even amidst the rubble!
