When did this opposition response start? It wasn't always so, but I can't remember when or why it came about.

Did Gephardt say anything? Oh yes - Campaign finance reform. We musn't forget that. (I forgot where it is on the list of things that Americans find really important.)LOL!

I just couldn't bring myself to listen to Gepfart. Has he mentioned Enron yet? I'm betting he is desperate enough to do it.

I don't know why Republicans did it during Clinton's era or why Democrats do it now.

1) Free face time in front of a camera
2) Make themselves look important so people want to buy their influence

I think we can count on Alan Keyes supporting the Democrat response.

Yep! He, at least, will support the anti-W position. Keyes is an embittered loser. And he will remain so.

The laundry list of social programs was politics. Cut the Democrats off at the knees. We'll see how many really happen. Not many I bet. And any which do will be offset by the growth in GNP caused by tax cuts and military spending.

No kidding. Let's see, do we want to focus on defeating terrorists who want to kill us, or on making sure that evil corporations can't engage in political speech? Gosh, let me think about that for a few nanoseconds...

I am watching Alan Simpson on MSNBC, but I have to suffer through Leon Panetta of the Panetta Institute.

I'll go along with the folks rating the speech a "B". Well-written, well-delivered, but that laundry list in the middle isn't sitting too well with me personally. Increased gummint funding for Head Start and programs like that? Maybe, if they could get the money from it by defunding NPR, the National Endowment for the Arts, etc. And as for getting a good teacher in every classroom, that won't do a damned bit of good if they're teaching the same liberal/socialist claptrap they're teaching today, and if the NEA is still in its present form. The "USA Freedom Corps"? Okay...is this going to be a boondoggle like Americorps was? It almost sounds like old Civil Defense groups, doesn't it?

Still, it was very clear who was in charge. W and his crew are far, far better at getting their message out than the Rats probably ever imagined. And I love it!

I heard Gep's speech. The Dems stumbled badly. That does not mean they cannot regroup, but they should just give up on these responses to the SOU. I think they do more harm than good...

You know what?

GW Bush just gave one heck of a speech.

That stuttering guy from Texas who slurs his talk is sounding like he has Davie Crocket or Daniel Boone in his background.

He didn't talk about the state of the economy or anything else. He just said that America is going to go on. And that we as americans are going to make that happen.

I wasn't too thrilled about all the government envolvement that he promoted, but it was overall a good speech.

What the heck is happening? Now Gepphart(sp) is calling for tax cuts?

my guess, as a later post (by VRWC) summized is that...this impromptu remark was mostly spontaneous and meant as an ice breaker / attempt at levity, Texan to Texan ?

Bill Schneider on CNN...."the strength of this speech flows from the personal character and integrity of this president...the people instinctively recognize that in him". Not bad for a lib.

Jackson was in da house.

Another thing to note: oblique, veiled, but very critical, comments about Saudi Arabia.
