All of these think the most important story of the day is a prescription fraud charge on the daughter of the governor. Frankly, I think there's more to the choosing of this story than just "objectivity".

Humph. Based on the hundreds of posts about this story on FR today, I'm hesitant to throw stones at others for turning this into a story. I guess rubbernecking has no political party.

I'm not meaning to disagree with you on the media in general, but when I apply the "what would I do" rule I think even I would have reported it. It becomes, however, a question of degrees AND a question of "who's digging up dirt on the Bushes and why?" Also, I find it difficult to believe that Chelsea has lead a perfect life, but the media fawns all over her.

So, I do think it's a story, but I agree it shouldn't be the lead story.

This is a big story because politicians have passed laws that demand jail time for minor drug offences.

Is this really a "drug" offense, or is it a "fraud" offense? Has Jeb really made a special case or rescued Noelle? Is Noelle a minor or is she an adult? From what I hear, she is 24 years old. Sounds adult to me. (or are we going to plea, like the 'Rats did with Monica Lewinsky, that she was a "poor girl who was confused"?)

Well, it turns out to be both and in terms of the law, the "fraud" aspect is the more serious of the two. And it really can't just be ignored because it's a "fraud" offense because well, you just to have to see the arrest photo to know that it appears to be more than just a minor "drug" offense. This does not appear to be one of those Friday night at the fraternity sort of things. I feel sorry for the kid because she looks pretty beat up.

If it was for panic attacks, why didn't the 24 year old just go to a doctor and get some Zanax? I think there are tons of people with scripts for Zanax. However, with panic attacks which come in many different varieties, desperation is an aspect of it until the sufferer gets the right help and the right medication.

Plus, anybody up there with the Bush name - you know they are quick to call the media and the police. I have been at a pharmacy where a guy tried to get a script for a much stronger substance than Zanax. They simply told him they couldn't fill it because there was no DEA number on the script. They could have refused to fill the prescription. I think because she was a Bush, she was treated with the deluxe treatment, let's call the cops this time.

But what you said was EXACTLY MY THOUGHT when I first heard it! I've never taken a Xanex in my life, but my experience with women I know and work with is that they just walk in a doctor's office and are handed a Xanex prescription. Sexist? So sue me.:-) So why would a wealthy gal from a prominent family not be able to simply get a real doctor to write her prescription? Pretty weird.

For openers, she is probably an addict and none of it should be expected to make much sense. If she is abusing the drug, one doctor won't be enough. And if she tries to get multiple prescriptions from multiple doctors, the information will probably get funneled into her one health insurance company leading to exposure, etc., etc. If she is an addict, don't even try to figure it out. It's not going to make sense. The only thing you need to understand is that the drug is the focus of her life and nothing else is allowed to get between her and the drug.

What evidence do you have for this claim? I just read the police report on thesmokinggun.com and it indicated that Noelle said she was starting a new job today. Maybe she was stressed out about that and jumped the gun on getting a refill for her meds. I'm not making excuses. If she did the crime, she'll have to face the consequences, but your characterization of her as an addict seems a little premature based on the available information.

There's been no evidence Noelle was treated any better than your average "prescription fraud" defendant just because of who her father is. Do you have evidence to the contrary?
