JUSTICE COVERS 'NUDE' STATUES
DRUDGE ^ | 01/28/02

Fed up with having his picture taken during events in the Justice Department's Great Hall in front of semi-nude statues, Attorney General John Ashcroft has reportedly ordered massive draperies to conceal the offending figures -- which have been displayed since the 1930s!

The draperies were installed last week at a cost of just over $8,000, reports ABCNEWS.com's Beverley Lumpkin.

At the center of the controversy: two enormous and stylized but largely naked aluminum statues.

The female figure represents the Spirit of Justice; the male on the right is the Majesty of Justice. The male is clad in only a cloth draped over his essential parts; the female wears a sort of toga-style garment, but one breast is entirely exposed.

Last November, during a press conference announcing new challenges of fighting terrorism, Ashcroft was photographed with the naked breast right over his shoulder!

The snap ran in major papers.

Ashcroft has transformed from the guy who would clean up justice, to the guy who would obstruct justice, to...well, a ninny.

"I wish he hadn't done that. It plays into every 'Puritan', 'anti-culture', etc. etc. etc. stereotype that the left brandishes against the right."

Big time! This meaningless gesture (if true) just lost him any chance of a Supreme Court confirmation. He'll be made out to be an idiot over this.

He is an embarrassment to the administration and the sooner he is gone the better

I find the covering of the statues funny, but Ashcroft is a brilliant man. The liberals dreaded his going into the AG role, because they know how he can spin like a meister, and has an uncanny ability to use time to gradually bring his issues to the fore in a positive light.

Reference the gun debate. He's already moving there.

The 2nd amendment will be settled for conservatives by the end of 3.5 years. Mark my words.

Meese should have thought of this. One of the funniest moments in fedgov history was Meese delivering his porn study in between two naked statues.

If you think about it, why are statues that represent Justice standing naked? If they are representative statues of our Justice system, why can't the have cloth coverings? The PC police are not the ones wanting them covered. Politically correct people would want the nudity to remain (and miss the point of the purpose of the statues)

And he did it right when the Dems are gearing up a campaign to paint Republicans as intolerant as the Taliban.

I see a campaign commercial coming. The Taliban destroys statues, Ashcroft hides them.

Isn't the female statute the same one that was behind Ed Meese when he announced his pornography commission? That was a picture, let me tell ya.

This doesn't smell right to me....

I'll need confirmation from a source more reliable than Drudge before I buy this (Maybe AheadNews.com?).

"If you think about it, why are statues that represent Justice standing naked?"

Because, Justice is naked, as in the naked truth...no cover...very symbolic, like justice being blind....should we order glasses?

What are the Clintons going to say?

The same as they always say:

Hillary, "I don't know anything about that and if I do I don't remember it."

Bill, "I never had sex with that woman, Ms Whatsherame, and if I did it wasn't really sex. It may have been something sort of like sex but it definitely wasn't sex. Gollee, I didn't even know anything about it until I read it in the paper."

Maybe he thinks this isn't the place for it. Maybe he is doing it because someone complained. Is this the whole story? Maybe he was afraid Helen Thomas would get ideas.

Going after that rediculous urine/blood "art" was on thing, but this sort of smug self-rightiousness is what made art sterile and lifeless in ways only the communist states like the Soviet Union previously could accomplish.

This man needs to gets grounded into the realities of his job, and leave artistic pieces which grace our nation's capital alone.

I wince thinking of former Talibums pointing their boney, stinking fingers at this as an example of American hypocracy; doing this after months of criticizing their blowing up of ancient religious statues.

Hillary, "I don't know anything about that and if I do I don't remember it."

She really said that, didn't she?

talk about a scrambled brain lying through her teeth. Anyone who votes for her is an idiot and should be flogged alongside her.
