He is an embarrassment to the administration and the sooner he is gone the better

I find the covering of the statues funny, but Ashcroft is a brilliant man. The liberals dreaded his going into the AG role, because they know how he can spin like a meister, and has an uncanny ability to use time to gradually bring his issues to the fore in a positive light.

Reference the gun debate. He's already moving there.

The 2nd amendment will be settled for conservatives by the end of 3.5 years. Mark my words.

I certainly hope you are correct on this. I am afraid that his accomplishments will be discredited if he comes off as a buffoon with the kind of foolishness he is showing about these statues. He can't stand in front of a nude statue but he can put up with a "J. Edgar Hoover" building in his department.

Yet bush has already stated that he will not allow the assault rifle ban to sunset.

You may have that exactly right. During his confirmation time, the NY Times ran a profile of him, in which they quoted a liberal Missouri elected official (a judge) saying "he's the most clever politician I've ever met."

He may have had something of a deal working with the Dub: "If you don't contest the Carnehan election, I'll appoint you AG when (and if) I win." This would, among other things, allow the Republicans to focus on the important prize, and spare Ashcroft the pain of a difficult fight.

This story is funny, but I'm not entirely believing it until another source, other than Drudge, surfaces.

I hope you're correct about the second Amendment, but I have seen no evidence of his "brilliance". Was getting his butt kicked for the Senate, then couldn't cover against the dead guy's wife. All the evidence to me since shows quite the contrary.
