JUSTICE COVERS 'NUDE' STATUES
DRUDGE ^ | 01/28/02

Fed up with having his picture taken during events in the Justice Department's Great Hall in front of semi-nude statues, Attorney General John Ashcroft has reportedly ordered massive draperies to conceal the offending figures -- which have been displayed since the 1930s!

The draperies were installed last week at a cost of just over $8,000, reports ABCNEWS.com's Beverley Lumpkin.

At the center of the controversy: two enormous and stylized but largely naked aluminum statues.

The female figure represents the Spirit of Justice; the male on the right is the Majesty of Justice. The male is clad in only a cloth draped over his essential parts; the female wears a sort of toga-style garment, but one breast is entirely exposed.

Last November, during a press conference announcing new challenges of fighting terrorism, Ashcroft was photographed with the naked breast right over his shoulder!

The snap ran in major papers.

Check one:
[ ] I think JA was correct in coverning up the statue

It was silly even if it is within his privilege to do so.

[ ] I think JA created a public image problem

They are fitting into a bad characterization that will be SNL fodder.

In the rest of real America, he will be applauded for the strength of his convictions.

He will be laughed at as the fundie cretin who was afraid he'd get a boner for a aluminum tit.

I wonder if covering up the statue is just a drama being staged to distract us from what might possibly be real coverups.

This is true; however, Lumpy wrote the real truth: The natural habitat of a liberal "newsperson" is in the dirt. ;-)

I doubt that old Hugh would want this statue in his garden where he probably has the real thing.

Uhhh,semi-real thing. Silicone instead of aluminum. Definitely a step up,though.

Exactly. And How many Pictures have you seen Of Janet Reno, Shot from a position just about lying on the floor, to get the shot, they have been using ad nauseam of Ashcroft.

So what does THAT prove? That the press hates him and will do everything they can to make him look stupid.

Yes, the press thinks that the American viewing audience is ALSO juvenile and stupid, sadly they're right.

SO deal with it, it doesn't mean that Ashcroft needs to go around covering up everything in the background that he finds personally objectionable.

Reagan never would have done this.

He should move his conference area if it's such an issue.

Better that he be constantly seen in front of an exposed boob, than to pull this stunt and PROVE THAT HE IS ONE!

Actually he is acting like an Adult, by removing the puerile fascination of the Adolescent Press. Maybe now, they'll just shoot the pics straight on.

I can understand this point but I dont think they are handling it too well.

"If you expect us to be against the waste of 8000 dollars of federal money, applied in such a way as to cause the applier to be the butt of jokes from now until either 2004 or 2008, well, then, yes, that is what you can expect."

I appreciate your clarity on this topic, and I quite agree this cover-up could have easily been nipped in the bud before it became such a big bust for the AG. And of course the ninnies would say tongue in cheek that they are only trying to help.

I have worries protesters will use this issue as a foundation for dissent by covering up publicly owned art and standing next to their work with signs correlating what they are doing with this action by the AG.

I have fears he left himself wide open by putting this art under cover.

That's his right, IMHO. He has the right not to be photographed with a statue that creates double entndre.
Dude, who is going to think something like that (double entndre), other than some sick-o? Going there, either pre-emptively or from the pages of some goofy left-wing rag makes either look like a perv.

Honestly, I've seen that statue probably a dozen times and haven't thought once about it on that level.

Again, if he was so worked up about this, why didn't he take the non-stupid way out of this and just replace (or swap with some other federal location) both statues? Why did he have to take the most bone-headed option available?

[And of course the ninnies would say tongue in cheek that they are only trying to help.] This should have been in the next paragraph. It was a cut and past error, sorry. I was refering to protesters.

Why did those damn Republicans close down the government in 1995?

Because the Democrat press said they did. ;-)

Uhh, what was the number she came up with?

I think it's a damn shame nobody bothered to ask her at any of her press conferences EXACTLY HOW she did her research to arrive at the "proper" number. You know, the absolute minimum number of dildoes she needed to make it through the month. Not to mention the explanation for how she kept breaking and wearing them out. I'd of LOVED to have heard the answer to those questions.

Is Ashcroft going to order the destruction of Buddha statues next?

No, but I hear he is pushing for burquas for all unclothed statues.

"I wish he hadn't done that. It plays into every 'Puritan', 'anti-culture', etc. etc. etc. stereotype that the left brandishes against the right."

I agree--the liberals are going to have a field day with this.

Sounds like nobody faxed you the DimRep "talking points". The latest version is that we don't KNOW for a fact what Bubba Bush is up to,and he most likely has a secret plan that will take care of all that. We just need to be patient.

BTW,you could have saved a lot of typing by just saying"But,,,,but,,,,but,...ca,..caaa...,can't we just all get ALONG??"
