RE: Simon Closing in on Riordan in Another Poll
DATE: January 28, 2002
____________________________________________________________________
A new poll released Friday by the non-partisan California Target Book shows that conservative Republican Bill Simon's campaign for Governor continues to gain traction with voters. In three recent polls from January 10 through January 24, Simon's support has grown from 4% to 13% and now 18% and growing!
In a matter of three weeks Simon support has jumped almost five-fold on the strength of a growing paid media campaign, the televised candidates debate and key endorsements.
Simon has won recent endorsements from Rudy Giuliani, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, California Tax Limitation Committee, California ProLife Council, the California Organization of Police and Sheriffs and conservative State Senator Ray Haynes.
SIMON CLOSING IN ON RIORDAN AS JONES EASILY SURPASSED
The latest poll shows a continual growth in support for Simon despite being outspent by Riordan in recent weeks. While the Simon surge is based on a $600,000 media buy, Riordan has squandered over $2,000,000 according to press reports - with almost nothing to show for the effort. Jones continues to flounder without any prospect for a serious media campaign. The three recent polls were the Public Policy Institute Poll taken from December 26, 2001 through January 10, 2002; the News10-SurveyUSA Poll released on January 21st; and the Target Book poll taken from January 22 through January 24, 2002. The only candidate making significant statewide progress is Bill Simon.

SIMON NOW EVEN WITH RIORDAN IN PARTS OF CALIFORNIA
The most compelling aspect of the poll is the ground Simon is gaining on former L.A. Mayor Dick Riordan. Simon slightly leads Riordan in the San Francisco Bay Area media market (27%-26%) where Simon enjoys a 24% favorable - 3% unfavorable image rating. Simon also runs a statistical dead heat for first place in the Sacramento media market where Simon is viewed favorably by 27% of voters and unfavorably by only 3%.
RECOGNITION OF GIULIANI ENDORSEMENT GROWS
This new poll shows that the endorsement of Simon by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is playing an important role in helping to fuel the explosion in support for Simon. Among those who indicated that they were aware of Giuliani's endorsement of Bill Simon in the GOP gubernatorial race, a whopping 46% indicated they were supporting Simon. Only 1 in 5 voters was aware of the Giuliani endorsement when the poll was conducted.
As the Simon for Governor campaign continues to expand the size and scope of its paid television and radio advertisements in the coming days, this correlation will further propel Simon upwards in the polls.
JONES NOW IRRELEVANT IN GUBERNATORIAL RACE
The California Target Book poll also exposed the widely predicted end for the campaign of Secretary of State Bill Jones. Support for Jones is dropping to single digits in many parts of the state and among key demographics groups as a result of voters flocking to Simon. In the San Diego media market, for example, Jones polls just 4% of the vote. Without the capacity for any significant statewide media buys, Jones is likely to languish in single digits throughout the state.
RIORDAN NOW REELING UNDER CAMPAIGN SCRUTINY
The recent poll also shows increased negatives for Mayor Riordan as voters become increasingly aware of his inconsistent statements on major issues in the campaign. Now Governor Gray Davis is joining the fray and pointing out Riordan inconsistencies to primary voters!

And don't even get me started on smog checks and forcing us to have MTBE in our gasoline....
Yep, Bennett and Kemp dumped on California big-time when they proclaimed during that Prop (#?) battle that Californians should gleefully flop open their wallets and fund education, healthcare, and everything else for every illegal who could make it across the border. Extremely disappointing. What on earth were they thinking?
I wish it were so. But in spite of all the horrible things he's done, Davis remains the odd-on favorite to win in November. Simon, Jones, and Riordan each have (different) major flaws, and each would be a weak candidate against Davis. Davis' strength is as a bare-knuckles campaigner, plus he's got a huge campaign warchest. Neither Simon nor Riordan can overwhelm Davis by throwing in unlimited funds from their personal fortunes; at best it will make them financially competitive.
I very much fear that we Californians are looking at four more disastrous years with Gray Davis as Governor.
That sounds encouraging. I really hope he pulls it off, not only for California's sake, but for the sake of the Republican Party nationwide. If Simon gets the nod, will the California GOP do a Schundler on him and all but ignore his candidacy?
Impeach98: If they are the same ads I have seen then they DO tell you who they are paid for. Watch the first few seconds of the ad - at the bottom of the screen is Gray Davis' TV ads with the words "Paid for by Governor Gray Davis Committee" or something to that effect.
I am wondering when the media will discover -- or let us know that they know -- that Riordan once donated to Davis.
Yesterday Bill Simon promised that, if elected, he would issue a proclamation ending all abortions immediately!
Great news!
What are the specific legal actions, which you propose these Executive Branch office holders would take? Last thing that I heard, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled on this matter.
Therefore, I see nothing a California Governor could do. The President of the US will nominate a replacement for the SC, when the next vacancy occurs. The Senate will then either approve or reject the nomination.
The balance of power in the Senate has everything to do with this issue; the California Governorship has not a thing to do, at this stage. Further, if the USSC made it a state issue, it is almost certain California would be a pro-choice state, pro-life governor or not.
"Close Our Borders from Illegals In California we have almost every ethnic group throughout the world. Many of these different people came here for freedom and to work hard. Many of the same people spent years to become a American citizens and are citizens of this great country today. However, today we have politicians who would open our borders to no less than 15 million illegal foreigners.
What does that do to the people who have worked so hard to become citizens and to the people of California? First, this is a slap in the face for the many people who spent years to become citizens. Also, it will mean loss of jobs, homes, over crowded schools, welfare, crime, five or more families in one home or apartment, more people driving without insurance, more court cases, more taxes to take care of all these illegal foreigners and much more.
Already our schools are rated 49th worst in the nation. Part of that problem is having children in our schools who cannot speak English, which slows the learning process down for the rest of the students.
Many people will lose their homes and jobs because of the illegal foreigners who are willing to work for less money to support many families living together in one home.
Our taxes are too high as it is; yet our politicians will allow welfare for the illegal foreigners who will not work.
The politicians are not looking at this as if to help anyone except themselves so that they can receive more votes to be re-elected.
These same politicians are not willing to help our own citizens, yet they want to let in foreigners. Look at all of the homeless people we already have. Look at how many Americans are already out of work. Look at how many of our children go to bed each night hungry. But we still have politicians who are willing to add to the problems we are facing with our citizens here and do nothing to help them.
One very important thing to understand about foreigners coming into this great country of ours is that they have their own country. If they want the same freedom that we have here, then they should do as our forefathers did and stand up to fight in their own country for their freedom. If they are not willing to fight for their freedom in their own country, they surely will not fight here in our country to keep it free!
Our politicians know this and that is another reason they are willing to open the borders to people who will not fight in their own country for freedom. The politicians prefer to have people who are easy to control. If you have any doubts about this just think about all of the freedoms we have already lost. These freedoms have been lost because too many people have stopped fighting for them.
To stop this, as Governor, I will close the borders. If the Federal Government tries to stop me, then I will not only close the borders to the illegals, but also to the Federal Government.
Under the Constitution of the United States, the Federal Government can only control its land and the people who work for it! The Federal Government control is mostly on military bases and a few Federal buildings that it owns. This means they have NO control over any of the 50 sovereign states in the Union, unless we let them take that control. As Governor, I will not let that happen, as did Gray Davis."
*Sigh*...time for another reality check.
Listen closely: That ship has sailed. The Roe v. Wade verdict isn't going anywhere, and neither are state laws that allow abortion. In California -- even before 1973 -- there were loopholes that well-heeled and/or well-connected pregnant women could have used in order to kill their babies in utero.
Face facts: No one that could possibly be elected in the twenty-first century will "end all abortions immediately" by edict, and there is no reason to believe that there are enough voters anywhere in the United States to elect people to state legislatures to accomplish that goal.
There are things that still can be done to prevent government agencies from enforcing loco parentis every time a girl wants to seek abortion without parental consent, and requiring waiting periods and full-disclosure announcements that warn about the increased likelihood of breast cancer for aborting mothers. But an immediate abortion ban would register millions of Democrats overnight. The only way a GOP candidate will "end all abortions immediately" is if s/he is actually secretly working for the Dems and seeks to destroy the party.
Are you serious? That would be headline news for the lamestreamers, and they would set their sights on him like you wouldn't believe. Show me something that says that.
