He pushed the largest tax hike in California history in 1991

And don't even get me started on smog checks and forcing us to have MTBE in our gasoline....

As a California voter since 1968, I certainly approved of the job Pete Wilson did in California -- and voted for him, TWICE. Giuliani can talk all he wants about Simon, but Giuliani doesn't live in California and in the end won't influence that many voters here. As a very long time L.A. resident, I can't say I find much fault with the way Riordan ran the city. He certainly cleaned things up considerably and spent millions of his personal funds in the process. He also took just a token $1 per year for each year of his first term. He may or may not have taken a real salary the second term -- I don't know. I don't love Diane Feinstein, but she definitely believes the borders should be tightened up. The Central Valley may be high on Simon but the Central Valley won't elect the next governor. I'd rather have Dick Riordan than another four years of Gray Davis.

Re "overestimating the numbers of REAL Republican women who are pro-choice" -- LOL -- there are MILLIONS of pro-choice Republican women, regardless of whether they are right-wing enough for many on Free Republic. Yeah, yeah, call us baby killers, Hitler lovers, communists, and all rest of the ridiculous adjectives aimed at pro-choice persons. What makes no sense is the hatred of Riordan, since he is being revealed by Davis as a PRO-LIFE candidate!

Pete was way tougher than those milquetoasts. The people that have hurt CA Repubs are mostly out of state, national party RINO cowards... Kemp and Bennett are always on my list.

Yep, Bennett and Kemp dumped on California big-time when they proclaimed during that Prop (#?) battle that Californians should gleefully flop open their wallets and fund education, healthcare, and everything else for every illegal who could make it across the border. Extremely disappointing. What on earth were they thinking?

Regarding Riordan's backing of Villaraigosa for L.A. mayor...big deal! FYI -- Villaraigosa and the victor, Hahn, were nearly identical except for their ethnicity....Actually, Villaraigosa was a touch more conservative than Hahn! The blacks and whites in this city didn't want a Mexican mayor. That's all there was to it. The weirdest coalition in L.A. history elected Hahn, white conservatives and blacks. Politics had nothing to do with the outcome.

Dude, Davis is toast. ... Davis will be unable to defeat a Greenie or Reform Party candidate by the time we reach July and August.

I wish it were so. But in spite of all the horrible things he's done, Davis remains the odd-on favorite to win in November. Simon, Jones, and Riordan each have (different) major flaws, and each would be a weak candidate against Davis. Davis' strength is as a bare-knuckles campaigner, plus he's got a huge campaign warchest. Neither Simon nor Riordan can overwhelm Davis by throwing in unlimited funds from their personal fortunes; at best it will make them financially competitive.

I very much fear that we Californians are looking at four more disastrous years with Gray Davis as Governor.

If Bill Simon tortured little animals as a kid, would that make you more likely to vote for him?

Bitch about smog checks all you like -- but L.A.'s air has been better because of them, in addition to other changes, of course. We were choking on the polluted air back in the fifties and sixties -- now it's much better. I flew into Atlanta last December and THAT place had worse visible smog than did L.A.

Simon has an incredible amount of dollars to spend from his own personal fortune. As he gears up the advertising, his numbers will continue to rise.

That sounds encouraging. I really hope he pulls it off, not only for California's sake, but for the sake of the Republican Party nationwide. If Simon gets the nod, will the California GOP do a Schundler on him and all but ignore his candidacy?

I'd rather be proud to see a conservative lose than have a liberal like Dickie Pooh lead our party into oblivion. Only Simon can beat Gray Davis in November. A DIABLA like Dickie Pooh can't and already Davis is killing him among the same pro-abort crowd he hopes to win over. Never mind Dickie Pooh is as pro-choice as Davis; when Davis misrepresents his views do you really think any Rat worth his salt will vote for him? The funny thing about the Davis commercials is they're making Dickie Pooh look to Rats as conservative as opposed to who he really is. Stick a fork in him guys; he's toast. It takes an honest unapologetic conservative to get Davis on his on turf. No liberal's gonna be able to do that. So when it comes down to Dickie Pooh vs Simon there's only one obvious choice for conservatives who'd like to see Davis lose his job in November.

churchillbuff: WHo's funding the TV ads that attack Riordan for giving money to pro-life candidates and causes?

Impeach98: If they are the same ads I have seen then they DO tell you who they are paid for. Watch the first few seconds of the ad - at the bottom of the screen is Gray Davis' TV ads with the words "Paid for by Governor Gray Davis Committee" or something to that effect.

I am wondering when the media will discover -- or let us know that they know -- that Riordan once donated to Davis.

Please provide some evidence that Simon, if elected, will work to END ALL ABORTIONS IMMEDIATELY.

Yesterday Bill Simon promised that, if elected, he would issue a proclamation ending all abortions immediately!
Great news!

Otherwise, he's all talk, much like President Bush has turned out to be.

What are the specific legal actions, which you propose these Executive Branch office holders would take? Last thing that I heard, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled on this matter.

Therefore, I see nothing a California Governor could do. The President of the US will nominate a replacement for the SC, when the next vacancy occurs. The Senate will then either approve or reject the nomination.

The balance of power in the Senate has everything to do with this issue; the California Governorship has not a thing to do, at this stage. Further, if the USSC made it a state issue, it is almost certain California would be a pro-choice state, pro-life governor or not.

Following is a statement by Nick Jesson who is looking for the Republican nomination for job as Governor of California. As you may not know, the best known candidates, Simon and Riordan are both advocates of open borders. Bill Jones, although he did support Prop 85, has had nothing to say about immigration in the official voter information guide. Let's get the debate on immigration going.

"Close Our Borders from Illegals In California we have almost every ethnic group throughout the world. Many of these different people came here for freedom and to work hard. Many of the same people spent years to become a American citizens and are citizens of this great country today. However, today we have politicians who would open our borders to no less than 15 million illegal foreigners.

What does that do to the people who have worked so hard to become citizens and to the people of California? First, this is a slap in the face for the many people who spent years to become citizens. Also, it will mean loss of jobs, homes, over crowded schools, welfare, crime, five or more families in one home or apartment, more people driving without insurance, more court cases, more taxes to take care of all these illegal foreigners and much more.

Already our schools are rated 49th worst in the nation. Part of that problem is having children in our schools who cannot speak English, which slows the learning process down for the rest of the students.

Many people will lose their homes and jobs because of the illegal foreigners who are willing to work for less money to support many families living together in one home.

Our taxes are too high as it is; yet our politicians will allow welfare for the illegal foreigners who will not work.

The politicians are not looking at this as if to help anyone except themselves so that they can receive more votes to be re-elected.

These same politicians are not willing to help our own citizens, yet they want to let in foreigners. Look at all of the homeless people we already have. Look at how many Americans are already out of work. Look at how many of our children go to bed each night hungry. But we still have politicians who are willing to add to the problems we are facing with our citizens here and do nothing to help them.

One very important thing to understand about foreigners coming into this great country of ours is that they have their own country. If they want the same freedom that we have here, then they should do as our forefathers did and stand up to fight in their own country for their freedom. If they are not willing to fight for their freedom in their own country, they surely will not fight here in our country to keep it free!

Our politicians know this and that is another reason they are willing to open the borders to people who will not fight in their own country for freedom. The politicians prefer to have people who are easy to control. If you have any doubts about this just think about all of the freedoms we have already lost. These freedoms have been lost because too many people have stopped fighting for them.

To stop this, as Governor, I will close the borders. If the Federal Government tries to stop me, then I will not only close the borders to the illegals, but also to the Federal Government.

Under the Constitution of the United States, the Federal Government can only control its land and the people who work for it! The Federal Government control is mostly on military bases and a few Federal buildings that it owns. This means they have NO control over any of the 50 sovereign states in the Union, unless we let them take that control. As Governor, I will not let that happen, as did Gray Davis."

First, Riordan is the first to admit that he's the opposite of a pro-life a candidate.
Second, I don't consider most pro-abortion people "Hitlers." They're not like Hitler. They're more like the average decent Germans who did nothing to stop Hitler. They choose to ignore or silently approve of the inherently homicidal nature of abortion for a variety of reasons.

*Sigh*...time for another reality check.

Listen closely: That ship has sailed. The Roe v. Wade verdict isn't going anywhere, and neither are state laws that allow abortion. In California -- even before 1973 -- there were loopholes that well-heeled and/or well-connected pregnant women could have used in order to kill their babies in utero.

Face facts: No one that could possibly be elected in the twenty-first century will "end all abortions immediately" by edict, and there is no reason to believe that there are enough voters anywhere in the United States to elect people to state legislatures to accomplish that goal.

There are things that still can be done to prevent government agencies from enforcing loco parentis every time a girl wants to seek abortion without parental consent, and requiring waiting periods and full-disclosure announcements that warn about the increased likelihood of breast cancer for aborting mothers. But an immediate abortion ban would register millions of Democrats overnight. The only way a GOP candidate will "end all abortions immediately" is if s/he is actually secretly working for the Dems and seeks to destroy the party.

Gosh, judging from your posts, you are in quite the nasty mood tonight. I'm sorry. First, I don't 'hate' Riordan, I just don't care for him. Second, I'm not calling you any names. Third, I don't know who these MILLIONS of pro-choice Republican women are. I know there are a number out there, but most of my female friends are Democrats and consequently, we don't talk politics. I am not militant by any stretch of the imagination and you need to stop projecting your stuff onto other people. If you could just lower your defenses for a minute and set politics aside, from a compassionate point of view, how could you possibly champion the torture and killing of another human being who feels an incredible amount of pain in the process? A very wise woman said, "It is a poverty that a child must die so that another may live as they choose." That person was Mother Teresa. No one on earth has the inherent 'right' to kill. There has to be another way. I suspect I know why you reacted so strongly to this. I hope you find the healing you need.
